You know, I think that [info]fandom_scruples actually raises some interesting questions about social perceptions of morality.

And there's some good conversation about that very subject looking to brew in the comments.

I hope that instead of getting defensive and knee-jerky about this guy, people actually discuss the ideas that he brings up. Like how that Puritan morality is still floating around American society, and how thanks to that, the concept of "sex = ev0l," and especially "enjoying sex = ev0l," is so widespread and deep-rooted.

Because, I dunno, I think it's really interesting. And there's a lot of smart fen who could really go to town on this one, and I hope they will. If there was ever a time and a place to bring the meta? This is it, baby!

God. Am very, very tempted to drop in and say that my male high school English teacher gave me Lolita to read when I was 14 (because I'd run out of things to read) and my parents were delighted that he thought my reading skills/understanding were advanced enough to 'get' it. Of course, these were the parents who let me read DH Lawrence at 12 so who knows?

I read adult books before I was a teenager (come on, those Pern books are about as harmful as sugared water. They might rot your teeth but that's about it) and I can remember liking the romance - 'aww, so-and-so got together with teh hero!' - but anything else I read but it didn't have the meaning that it has now. *cough* Of course, my parents vetted the tv shows I was allowed to watch and I wasn't allowed to surf the net without supervision (and my dad passworded everything)

There's a difference between reading a well written book and watching a crappy tv show and children are probably (only my own opinion as am not expert on the subject of child psychology and child development despite degree in psychology unlike, [info]fandom_scruples must be and my parents are) in danger of more harm from the latter than the former.

Incidentally, when I was asked to find some Harry Potter fanfic sites for a primary (elementary) school class who had been writing fanfiction in their English lessons, it was fairly easy to tell which were the adult ones and which were the general ones.

You know, I've only seen snippets of this "interview", but the more I read about JKR the more I like her. She is abusive to her fans and not afraid to give them a smackdown and let them know they're being stupid. She is an ass to them, and I have to give her props for not kneeling down and catering to them. They're HER books, god-dammit, and she sure as hell is gonna let you know that.
