	I'd like to think Takaya-sensei did this deliberately because she was tired of fangirls loving Akito only for his hawt bishiness. Well, it certainly made my week to see a whole lot of pairings dry up and die out. Then again, I'm easily amused and vicious as that (and I've ranted long and hard about my hatred of all things Furuba yaoi, but that's neither here nor there)

Talk about a twist! Wow. My initial reaction at first was, "That's so not true." I was one of those whose head kind of .. 'popped' upon first seeing it. Now, it's actually interesting. I'm looking forward to how this progresses.

People are denying to see the truth. Some are going to continue thinking Akito's a male. I think I read a theory that Akito got implants in some of the journals.

This will be around for awhile. Expect it to come up again if and when the English version of this chapter pops up.

Holy motherfuck. I saw the ~~wanksplosion~~ news on the Furuba ML last night/this morning and was tempted to post it, but I wasn't sure where to draw the line between "wank" and "fangirl hysteria".

That is, assuming there is a line.

Most of the behavior there was along the lines of "OMG Not my Aki-chan!!! He's too HAWT to be a girl!!!" There were several people declaring that they refused to acknowledge it and would remain in denial of Akito's lack of Y chromosomes forever. Approximately two people in the entire 120+ post mess were even approaching coherence.

My favorite comment so far has been that Akito, as a character, is no longer as "deep" or interesting. Because she is female. I love fandom.

As for the actual twist, I think it's totally awesome. Akito makes a prettier girl than boy anyway.

	I find it amusing that some of the excuses are "But... but in the anime Akito's VA was manly! And deep!" Like there aren't continuity errors in any of the anime that have been animated before the manga was finished. Geez! Eh, I'm still a little confused because there have been shots with Akito draped over Shigure and it hasn't been explained if she's not one of the zodiac how she wouldn't trigger Shigure's curse. But I hope that might be cleared up later...along with almost all the other curse-semantics.

As it is, it suddenly makes Akito's bitch hair-grab much funnier, so that's a big plus in my book.

I'm intrigued by this plot-twist being something that can only happen successfully in the dynamics of this particular kind of shojo manga. Magazines in which it would make sense: Hana to yume (maybe LaLa), Wings, Zerosum (plus Crimsom and South, though those aren't being published anymore). In other shojo magazines, such as Ribon, the mere fact of having multiple, more or less openly gay characters would be unthinkable, and at the first and the smallest mention of it the readers would know that it will be denied (and soon) or that one of the characters is a girl -- and thus, the "twist" wouldn't work. In BL magazines, which I tend to think of as off-shoots of shojo (though I know many won't agree with me), the characters will just be gay and there would be an outcry if some of them actually turned out to be female, so it wouldn't work there, either. The power of nearly-yaoi-yet-sticking-to-the-classical-shojo-side magazines!

My first reaction was "omgwtf?" Then I was like "aww, man, now Akito's an evil bitch instead". And then I got this awesome vision of Takaya, kicking back before drawing the latest chapter, getting the idea, snickering, and going "that'll sure fuck with their heads!"

I was never an Akito fan to begin with, so this doesn't bother me all that much. I'm kinda tired of getting FruityGroup digests in my inbox with 500 variations of "OOOOOH NOOOOOOOES", though. :D
