Tonight On Fox: WHEN SUETHORS ATTACK!
Woo hoo! My first wank! (flings confetti about)

[info]lamento_eroico posts a rant about yaoi fans, complaining her masterpiece is being overlooked just because it's het and the OMG LOUSY yaoi story next door is getting tons of reviews!

Turns out her story sounds suspiciously like a Mary Sue. When called on that, she gets pissy, including trotting out Ye Olde "Don't Like It? Don't Read It!" excuse.

Then she blames her Suethoring on ADD.

Hold onto your hats, folks! There may be more Suethor cliches to come!

Ooh! Both a "don't like it? Don't read it" and a "why won't you people read my stories?" Together! Oh, that's so good it just has to be fattening.

Wow, FFrants is really bringing the wank today.

Must be a full moon.

Out of curiosity what is so wrong with reading the types of stories you like anyway?

I mean if someone's a slash and yaoi fan and they'd rather read fics of that genre then I don't see the issue.

As long as they're not being an asshat about it, or claiming that all slash and yaoi is superior then I don't see the problem.

Agreed. There's not a high chance that I'm going to read Lupin x Sirius. I don't like Lupin x Sirius. If I see a Lupin x Sirius warning in the summary, I'm going to go read something else. If you want me to read Lupin x Sirius, it have better damn well be awesome.

You know, the thing is, the OP has a bit of a point. Slash is more popular than het in many fandoms. And yes, a story that contains slash gets an increased boosted in popularity. (I seem to recall that my friend Zatken-chan conducted a study on this subject a while back. Her fan fiction that contained slash was more popular and recieved more reviews.)

However, this is something that you just have to accept. I write about Peter Pettigrew. And I know and accept that many people will skip over my story because they don't like the character.

I won't even disagree that the OP has a right to vent about this. Or, at least, I would if her stories really were superior. And honestly, they don't seem to be.

But the other thing is, how much of a point is her point? (Uh...that made sense in my head.) I mean, it seems like basic common sense that if you write a popular pairing or a popular genre, you're going to get more reviews than if you write an unpopular pairing or genre. And as you say, slash is wildly popular in a number of fandoms.

I was just discussing this with friends the other day. Basically, if you write what the squealy "OMG I love it write more soon" fangirls want to read, you will get a ton of reviews. If you don't, then you won't. At least at the Pit.

It's not about slash. It's not. IMO it's not even about Mary Sues.

It's about seeing that your shitty story isn't getting the attention YOU want, and being a complete and total dickweed because of it.

Sure they have a right to rant! And we have a right to laugh at her for it.

Mmm, I don't really agree. Well, I agree that in some fandoms, slash readers outnumber het readers, and that many readers have no interest in het/gen/penguin sex, and thus won't read.

However, I don't think that this is grounds for complaining. The readers out there don't owe her anything. Are they for some reason obligated to read a story which doesn't interest them?

One moment people are screaming "if you don't like it, don't read it!!!!" and the next moment they're saying "even if you don't like it, read it!!!" :/

But then, I write saffic in Jem, which is a het-dominated fandom. I just accept that the only people who read are probably going to be my flist. I don't whine that the hetfen are meaaaaaaan because they don't want Kimber/Stormer and Roxy/Jetta. (Otoh, I write Malory Towers, which is at least 95% saffic, so it all balances out.)

Also, I hope and pray I don't have the off-putting writing problems that OP has, either.

You know, the thing is, the OP has a bit of a point. Slash is more popular than het in many fandoms. And yes, a story that contains slash gets an increased boosted in popularity.

So what? Some things are more popular than others, some stories get more attention than others.

Last I checked that's just how the world works.

As the other posters pointed out is that writing and posting a story doesn't mean that one is somehow *owed* attention and reviews.

[Not to mention that she wasn't writing about a potential couple in canon, but about and OC and a canon character, something which is gonna set off 'Sue Alarms' for many readers.]

I won't even disagree that the OP has a right to vent about this. Or, at least, I would if her stories really were superior. And honestly, they don't seem to be

But the thing is her 'issue' isn't really an issue [IMO], it's just other people having opinions and preferences which don't match up with her opinions and preferences.

I can understand bitching if your story is getting mocked, but bitching because you aren't getting reviews is really stupid. Maybe people ARE reading, think it's idiotic, and don't review because every time they do leave a bad review the author accuses them of flaming. When she says 'don't like it, don't read it' she doesn't seem to like when people follow that advice.

In my fandom, slash isn't very popular at all, so if soemone writes slash and posts to ff.net, it'll probably get a fraction of the reviews the het stories might. Same with unconventional couples. People aren't going to change their minds because someone's whining.

It couldn't be that I'm a yaoi fan because I like it, could it? I couldn't be having fun reading and writing about hot, angsty mansex, could I?

Naw... guess not.

I'm anti-narrowminded yaoi fans.

Yes, having different tastes in fanfic is certainly a sign of prejudice.

It's the Blaaaaaaaaame Gaaaaame!

Yaoi, yaoi, bo-boway, banana *heh* fanna fo-foway, fee fi mo maoway, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaoi!

I have to admit, this was fun. Or it was fun right up until the point went SAILING OVER EVERYONE'S HEAD.

It's not about yaoi.
It's not about Mary Sues.
It's about looking at your deathly empty review board, and looking for ANYTHING to blame except your own glaring lack of writing skill.

OMG, they can't POSSIBLY be ignoring my shit fic because it's not a shining beacon of wonderfulness! It must be those aliens evil yaoi fans who are blocking the glory my lameass story would otherwise be reaping!!!

Oh. My. GOD.

I do feel like there's some sincerity buried under all the blame-game bullshit, and I do hope she learns from this. Namely, not everyone is going to be lavished with praise - most people get benignly ignored. And second, if your story flops, it is no one's fault but your own. Dust yourself off and get the fuck on with your life already.

I'm done.

Number one: Dude. Come on. People like what they like. If they don't to read het or slash, they aren't going to read it no matter how much you complain about it.

Number two: I saw a point buried in there somewhere. Point being that yes, in certain fandoms, some types of fics or pairings or whatever are automatically widely read because said type/pairing/whatever is popular in that group. But still: so fucking what?

Number three: her story was extremely... vanilla. I could find a hundred ones like it in the FFVII section of the Pit. Improve your writing, and don't go around making crap excuses for it. People are not responding well to the fic because your exposition is long and awkward and your OC is a Mary Sue. It's not a big buttsex conspiracy, okay?

....Okay, I'm done wanking. Look what she made me do! >.>;;

The next time someone blames their stupidity on a neurological disorder, I'll punch them.

Believe me, if I were to go around and blame all of my 'weaknesses' on my Tourette, I would get knocked seven ways till Sunday. You know why? It'd be absolute bullshit.

And besides, people expect that someone with a disability is going to be "slow" or "stupid". Another reason to not act like your disorder's your crutch: TO PROVE EVERYONE WRONG. To prove that yes, you are an intelligent human being, and YES, you can do a good job at what you put your heart into.

Although something tells me she's just doing this half-assed in the first place...
