Still wanking
Not overly wanky, but kind of adorable: Firefly fandom enters the realm of potential wankiness with that time-honored tradition ... Fanfic Awards.

The "Blue Sun Awards" take a bit of a beating here as the poster laments the award processes and procedures.

There is a new category, not included among the nomination categories, called the "Favorite Author Award." Looking at the list of names, I assume that it was culled from whoever got either the most nominations at whatever stage. Nothing good can come from this award. I cannot think of any redeeming artistic or fannish value it may have, except to stroke egos and encourage the worst type of "popularity contest" behavior. The very fact that it's called "favorite" author is pretty much a statement in favor of popularity voting.

Expecting fanfiction awards to be merit-based, non-popularity contests ... Firefly fandom is so cute!

Is it a bad sign when the organizers of fanfic awards write with awkward sentence structure and can't spell? Judging: We will base judging to narrow down the nominations on these 4 criteria: Grammar/Spelling, Plot Consistancy, Characterization, Overall Appeal. It will likely be based on a scale of 1-10 Shiney Stars.

Please trust our taste in fanfiction, but ignore the fact that we can't use your/you're properly on our avatar ...

You definitely want to see your fanfic awards run by folks at the peak of speling/grammer accuracy.

"We are limiting you to 2 nominations per catagory."

And none of these catagories will be "Best Use of Spellcheck"</i>

I don't think I've said it this week so now's as good a time as any:

I ::heart:: you so very very much.

Sigh.

Fic awards are uniformly a really. bad. idea.

Don't forget the bit where one of the organizers also has a fic nominated! And that you are apparently able to vote more than once! And that the same story showed up in multiple categories!

So, now we have incompetent management plus the added fun of blatant favoritism. Huzzah?

You know what the biggest problem with most fanfic awards is? The people who are in charge of judging so rarely are qualified to do so, in any way, shape, or form. *points to above example* (I mean, really, would it KILL to find someone who can spell and write coherently to judge or organize these things!?) Imagine if publishing houses or literary journals just grabbed someone off the street and said "You're our editor!" >.<

Of course, the flip side is that when you get someone willing to put together a decent awards competition with some actual standards, the whiny bitchy fangirls who can't write authors accuse the awards of being either elitest or "snobby." Bah. *goes out to put babies on spikes*

Almost every "fanfic awards"-type of thing only ends up being a wankfest AND a popularity contest AND just overall a very bad idea.

If they want to a popularity contest, why don't they just start a thread with the subject "Who's your favourite fanfic author?" and watch everybody mention their best friends, then comment "OMG kisskiss to every1 who mentioned me!111" and a few newbies whine "Why wasn't I mentioned? I guess nobody cares about little ol' me... *sniffle*".

I used to be on a fanfic board and we'd have a thread like that once a month. It made my head hurt. Really.

The best authors don't give a shit about things like fanfic awards, I've noticed.

I think when done properly fanfiction awards should lead readers to new authors they might not have found, to highlight rare pairings, and acknowledge well-written, well-ploted stories by both new and old writers.

Alas this rarely happens.

I do have some hopes for the highlander fanfiction There can be only one awards I noticed pop up recently. If anything it might create some intersting wank and give me some new reading material.

I've seen/heard one thingy work out, it was in quite a small community of writers for a tv-show called I-Man (my friend was a part of this community). She told me it worked well because there were a lot of "special mentions" besides the awards and therefore nearly everyone but the judges themselves received an award or a special mention or some kind of other honor. So it was all a bit kiss ass, but it gave a lot of confidence to everyone to keep writing and overall it did a lot of good to the community.

I don't want to judge the concept, but yes, the truth is that it rarely works out ideally.

Word. I have NEVER seen any fan fiction awards NOT dissolve into oceans of splooge, possibly excepting the ASCEM awards (Alt.startrek.creative.erotica.moderated) back in the day, and that's just because literally every single person who had submitted a story appropriate to any new category was nominated. So you could have, like, two hundred nominees for "Best Picard/Crusher" story and the "Best New Author" category was especially good for this reason.

The ONLY flamewar to ever happen in the Everwood fandom in two and a half whole years is over a fic awards nomination, which was voted on in secret, and by anonymous judges, and yeah, was basically a recs list for the organizer and her friends to pimp her friends' crappy MarySues to a wider audience.

In fact, in general, I think the energies of people who waste their time organizing shit like this would be better spent just putting together a recs lists. Although if they did that, we wouldn't have any fun with them here, would we? =)

Firefly fandom is so cute!
Yes, we had dimples surgically installed last week. *bats eyelashes*

For what it's worth, I do think that the organizers are sincerely trying to promote the efforts of fanfic authors and to recognize their achievements. I am in favor of the idea of fanfic awards in general. My statements were meant as constructive criticism, but I was probably harsher than I should have been.
