Over on 4bastards, yet another person complains about stupid anime fans that only watch corporate dubs and don't go and learn Japanese. Small, but cute and dumb.

Pfeth. Poseurs. Everyone knows the only way you're a *real* fan is if you go and tutor yourself in Japanese and never ever *ever* watch dubs. Dubs are *satan*! :O

Edit: And now, thanks to a random annonymouse, we get to see "Fanfiction Idol". Dear lord in heaven. It gets better every day, doesn't it? I can't wait to see the shit-flinging that'll cause. Better go sign up for that *nooooow*.

That is simply beautiful. I had to add that to the end of this post, it was so beautiful. O_o Who in hell would do something *that* stupid and obviously suicidal?

Must... monitor... for wank! X_x

Wanked. Couldn't help myself - pet peeve when people learn Japanese only so they can watch anime, then bitch and moan when other people have more brains than them.

Agreed. And the reasons that most give for *not* learning Japanese were just excuses. If you want to learn, you'll learn. Even if you have to travel, or give up your social life, or pay.

Though, learning Japanese just for anime? *snorts and chokes on laughter*

There are better ways to get your anime fix than to go and learn a new, grueling language just so you don't have to read subtitles or listen to OMGTEHEVILdubs.

And honestly, it's a bit insulting to the speakers of a language to just try to pick it up to watch their cartoons. It should be a happy side-effect, not the sole reason you study it, yannow? ^^

*although, I have to say - if TV inspires you to learn a new language, that's nice, too. I met a Russian lady in Greece who picked up all her English from watching TV ^^; I was amused at least*

I admit that being able to watch anime and read manga were the catalyst for my wanting to learn Japanese. However, the reason I finally decided to take a course in the language was that I realized I knew how to tell someone I was going to kill them, but not how to ask them out for coffee.

It's the little things that count, yo.

I just love what the OT poster said as a response to people who can't afford to download or buy raws.

Think again, there are bootlegs of every anime out there.

Granted, some bootlegs are good, but you are in a iffy topic there. Some are R1 rips, some are shitty quality.

I have been learning Japanese for four years because of my interest in dating sims. Sad is me...

Yes, there are. And some of us can't afford nifty new computers and a zippy internet connection to download them, so kindly stfu, OP.

Besides, half the time the fansubbers can barely write in English - how am I supposed to trust their Japanese?

Man, I see more about 4Kids than any other company.

Am I the only one who *LIKES* them? They cut some pretty innocent stuff, but they *leave in* stuff that you KNOW makes the censors pull their hair.

And they get *excellent* VAs (problem is they don't get *enough* of them and wind up working 'em all in like, 20 roles at once). But hell, a lot of them, especially on Pokemon, are better than their Japanese counterparts! James, for instance. And Meowth's Japanese voice is just *GRATING*.

I look at it this way:

Dub, sub, who the hell cares? Anime's Anime. If the voices don't scar my ears and the story they present is interesting, I'll watch it.

And before anyone lays into me for this, I have three words for you about why Dubbing is a good thing: Saban's Sailor Moon.

And if you don't know what I'm talking about (click the link at the top of the page under special presentation). . . http://svamcentral.org/svam/ms-sam.html

Bah, as an Indonesian, I can say this loud and clear. Darling, you haven't heard bad dub until you've seen and heard OUR version of Naruto. Or Kamen Rider Kuuga. Or Fushigi Yuugi. Or Gundam Wing. Or Rurouni Kenshin. *still has a headache imagining it*

Of course, we also have great dubs. But at least, be thankful that your TV station still has one series or two that's subbed instead of dubbed. -_-;;; Here, everything>/b> originally not in English is dubbed.

What, may I ask, is wrong with subs? Or simply good dubs? Yes, I know there are shitty dubs out there, but they aren't all evil. Anzumanga Daioh, Furuba, .hack//sign, et cetera. Even if they aren't perfect, they aren't neccessarily bad.

Doesn't anyone just learn to read properly and quickly?

The only issue I have with any of this stuff is the people who think they've learned Japanese from Anime (or even just fanfics) and run around squealing it at the top of their lungs, WRONG. I've never had much appreciation for Engrish and I certainly don't have appreciation for fangirly mumbo jumbo in any language if it's totally unintelligible. Using it wrong on the internet is almost as bad but at least I don't have to listen to people say it in voices that could cut glass.

That and giving bad guys obviously 'bad guy' voices. At least let the bad guy be a surprise occasionally dubbers -_- I don't want someone to come on and you KNOW they're evil because their voice is a good octave lower than any other character's and they speak in dramatics.
/end wanking

Eh. The original post was wanky but given the context it was written in (a community in which semi-literate teenagers pat each other on the back for writing death threats to a dubbing company), I can almost understand where it comes from. Not that it isn't stupid to tell people they're only really "serious" (??) about cartoons if they learn Japanese, but the rest of the people there are a million times worse.

They're just trying to get attention.

Yeah, that's it, trying to get attention.

Just like the people in PETA who bomb McDonald's restaurants for serving meat...

In other words, there's being reasonable and there's being a fucking nutcase about your cause. I myself am waiting for the subbed versions of Shaman King and YGO to come out, and also I'm watching uncut dubs to check on what things were left in/amplified/toned down in English as compared to the Japanese. *language dork*

I also have to admit...I DID start learning Japanese to watch anime, BUT I ended up loving it for its complexity and its giving me a window onto another culture. Plus it was difficult to learn...I like challenges. :D

With all the illiterate fangirls and boys out there, before being an elitist snob and insisting they should learn Japanese, the OP should be an elitist snob and demand that they should actually learn English first.

Sheesh. Do they want a deluge fangirls mucking up the Japanese language like it mucks up English?
