Fanfiction is Rape!
Yet another Bad Rpers Suck thing, but while some good points are made, Youlanda's reactions are quite obviously wanky.

http://www.livejournal.com/community/bad_rpers_suck/714393.html?thread=10397593#t10397593 for the beginning of Youlanda's massive spazzing.

Of particular note is when she produces sparkly text to assure us that, yes, fanfiction is uncreative, immoral and insensitive jerkoffs raping the authors.

Man...now, part of me agrees with her. I'm not big advocate of fan fiction...I think that it's fun every now and again, but not the most creative thing ever and it scares me when people devote waaaaay too much time to it. But I'm not going to stomp down the fic writers doors to tell them they're wrong. That's just stupid.

Besides, I can't myself say I don't spend a good deal of fantasy time romping in other's worlds...right now I'm particularly fascinated with Hellboy...

In short: Stop being on my side. You are making my side look not only stupid, but belligerant and cranky.

Also: A rant on ganking style form someone who'se art is about as stylistically distinguished as a stick figure is rich. If by "style" she means "all of the eyes are crooked". Especially when the majority of her art is fur art...man, that is sooo original. Not coming down on furs, but when someone doesn't seem to venture beyond the realm of drawing them and then yells at other people to be creative, it's sort of a pot calling the kettle black thing.

Because all the creative people feel that way. If I don't, I'm clearly not creative. That might explain the writer's block, tho...

Ooooooook, SOMEBODY needs a reality bitchslap.

It's actually more difficult, IMO, to write good fanfiction because you are playing by someone else's rules. When you make up your own, you have the ultimate freedom to do whatever you want. When writing fanfiction you have to follow the creator's rules and characterizations if you want to be taken seriously by anyone with more than two brain cells.

And I love the "OMG I WUZ PLAYJARIZED SO ALL FANFIC IZ EV0L!!!!!111" wangst. So, so amusing.

So obviously her "It's immoral because it's illegal!" arghument only extends to fanfic, and obviously not to completely morally acceptable but sadly illegal acts like beating a child.

I wrote six novels(more to come) and I'm studying creative writing in university. I think I qualify as a 'creative' person(the quality of my work may be debatable, but I am indeed creative). And would you look at that, I wouldn't feel raped at all if people wanted to write fanfiction and fuck with my characters.

When you publish a novel, you plant little seeds in readers' heads. They may invent their own stories in their heads, maybe dream about it. Fanfiction and fanart are also expressions of those little seeds. It creates a fandom, which keeps a work alive and gives the characters a longer life. If you don't want to share, if you don't want the characters to live, don't publish. When I read something mildly good, I rape it in my head aplenty. I'll put it down on paper if I feel like it damnit.

I have a very liberal vision of such things. But fuck, isn't it what artists are supposed to be like? Shouldn't we want to spread ideas and influence people instead of restraining them? Shouldn't we cheer for more creativity?

I'm an idealist I suppose.

Your not understand is simply your conceding because you can't find any other way to continue to argue the points against me... because I'm right and you're just a creativity raping thief parading around pretending to be a "fan" and an "author".

Buh?

The "emotional harm" inflicted by Fan Fiction could discourage the author to quit writing. Then what? That emotional harm has then taken away something the author enjoyed because of the selfisheness of Fan Fictionizers. Then no one gets to enjoy the work because of the selfishness of Fan Fictionizers. Oh, and now they've also caused financial damage because of the selfishness of Fan Fictionizers traumatizing the writer out of writing or that the non-writing writer goes after Fan Fictionizers with all of their cash to cover lawyer costs even though they'll get nothing back from the Fan Fictionizers. Perhaps they're trying to remove Fan Fiction so they feel safe writing again. They wind up going bankrupt. Now let's say the financial trouble combined with the emotional trauma and the loss of creative release in fear of being ripped off causes severe depression (and believe me, it does) and your favorite author commits suicide. Whose fault is it?

There we have it. Mpreg = murder.

Let me tell you something. Is an abuse survivor I spent 16 years of my life in an abusive family and then several more years in an abusive relationship. I'm free now. I'm still severely emotionally fucked up and have several disorders because of it (and am one of the thousands of Americans without health insurance or a job right now (and I quit my job because of abuse!)), even though the screaming and bullying and raging has passed.

Which law is it when someone plays the OMG I WAS ABUSED THEREFORE I'M RIGHT card? 'Cause if it isn't an internet law, it needs to be. Youlanda's Law? The Angst Exception?

You know, I've role-played OCs and written original worlds and characters. I've written original stories, long and short. My art, the bulk of it, portrays original characters based in original worlds.

I also write fanfic and roleplay in Harry Potter games. This isn't unusual! WTF!

For whatever reason, her continued misspelling of the word borrow is bugging me. On the other hand, I am immensely amused to know that she's inadvertently referring to a castrated pig.

...I think I need either caffeine or sleep.

She's right about fanfiction breaking copyright, but many creators and copyright holders turn a blind eye as long as they perceive nothing's done to try and professionally intrude on their copyright(Anne Rice, MZB,and the owners of the Stargate-1 being prime examples. What happened with the case against the guy running the SG-1 website, anyway?).

The rest of it -- honey, take a chill-pill, okay?

*de-lurking to rant*

Frankly, when something is taken without permission it is indeed stolen. If one alters, bastardizes, destroys, defaces, deflowers or something, they're raping it. Fan Fiction is no different from painting a mustache on the original Mona Lisa.

Oh, for the love of... RRRGH!

PEOPLE! Bad fan fiction does not "rape" the original source! Has Harry Potter spotaneously transform into a series about hot man sex? Has J.K. Rowling looked through the saucier fan fiction and thougth 'Wow, Snape and Harry should get it on more often, I'll write that in right away!' Has anyone found their copy of the Goblet of Fire dripping with suspicious liquid and weeping like the most frail of uke?

While we're at it, did the Mona Lisa grow a moustache after Duchamp's LHOOQ?

HELL NO!

The only way fan fiction could ever, ever affect the source material is if the author let it. So to Youlanda, and everyone else who complains about that bad fanfic destroying the dreams of the author, calm the hell down because your precious source material is still there and it's not going anywhere.

Also, I have the sensitivity of a brick and even I'm getting shitty at the way Youlanda's throwing the word 'rape' around. Step slowly away from the keyboard, woman.

Sparkly!

Someone has to teach me to do the sparkly text thingy so I may go around proclaiming that I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG!

Because the sparklies always speak the truth.

I'm rather surprised that I've been the only person to play the "I am a victim of sexual violence and you are a fucking moron" card.  Someone outside of the linked rant has theorized her history of abuse and lack of control of her own life makes her that much more rabid about the "tiny corner of her brain that she DOES have."  Still, I cannot figure out how use of someone else's intellectual property = violent, unwanted sexual acts.  Rape, bluntly put, fucks people up.  If an author is that messed up by fan-fiction, they need help.

Toward the end, she writes "I'm against Fan Fiction as it's illegal, selfish, disrespectful and wrong."

I am so very tempted to reply with "I'm against you because you are selfish, disrespectful and wrong. Would you please die now? *insert sparkly hearts and smily faces*" Except the thread has already been fandom_wanked, and I really don't think it needs to be featured on LJDrama as well.
