Out of Character, Out of Canon, Out of Cindness...

wait...i mean Kindness...with a K... O_o

[info]barbayat posts a rant at fanficrants which starts thusly:

"1) I’m not homophobic, I had sex with both men and women and I am female myself.

2) I’m not urging you to stop writing about things I do not understand and/or like."

Always a good way to start ..wanking O_o

And then when her rant causes people to get mildly upset she concludes it must be because no one is getting it

Ya know for someone so darn uptight about the quality of the fic they read you think she could, at some point, learn to use the fucking 'Shift' key!

And how to use periods and things like proper grammar and spelling.

Of course this may be why no one listens to her reviews.

In her defense (damn, now I feel dirty), she is from Germany. Only excuses her grammar and spelling, though.

But I *hate* it when people are losing an argument, then fall back on the 'You don't understand my point' idea. Is that a jurisimprudence law yet? If not, can we make it? Because it happens all. the. time. And it drives me insane. Yes hon, I get your point, I just think it's stupid.

I dunno. I didn't find her original questions wanky, though I did find the incest rant highly offensive. I have little idea what the difference was.

I answered her assuming the hypothetical situation in which something such as "objective OOC-ness" exists, which I don't actually believe it does, so, um.

I don't know what I'm saying.

Her argument was pretty flawed. The people who say they are writing OOC are usually people writing pairing fantasies or parodists. The rest of them think they're writing in character. So regardless of whether objective OOC-ness exists (I think it doesn't, but definitely OOC exists), it to me just seems obvious that everyone is not going to be aware of writing it.

The incest rant was just a waste of time. They ought to make it a rule there that people need to read previous discussions before ranting again. (Sort of like a FAQ)

My next reply started out "Dear Moron", but I knew I wouldn't have time to enjoy the wankage properly, so I had to drop it. Meh.

Oh man. English is OBVIOUSLY not her first language, which is probably why she can't make a coherent point to save her life. I sort of sympathize, the English-not-first-language-thing, that is. English is not my first language either, but a lot of practice and daily use of the language both online & offline have made me a lot more confident about using the language.

My English isn't flawless (this is why I nearly always have 3 beta's check my fics) by any means, but I think it's certainly good enough to communicate with people.

Her English is good, but I think she has a hard time understanding what others are trying to tell her.

But check it! She's clearly quite enthusiastic about this OOC-business.

Yeah, I dislike OOC as well, but then again, I'm smart enough to stay away from archives like FF.net.

I almost replied to tell her not all fanfic writers mangled canon and that it was possible to write slash and sex and incest without ruining the series...but I didn't feel like arguing. :P And she most definitely would've argued.

No one gets it because while the OP has a generally good point, she/he blotches it with ill wording.

To put her rant concisely, "If you are going to write a fan fiction with the characters so out of character that they aren't recognizable, then why don't you simply write original fiction?" And to that, I can agree.

That was as far as I made it. I couldn't even get to the true wank. That one half of a sentance made my brain explode and trickle out my left ear.
I'm not a grammar freak. I suck at spelling. I've even been known to let leet speak pass by me without batting an eye (or shoving the offender into the nearest closet). But every once in a while there is that one sentance that just defies all reason. That one little sentance that would make the baby jesus cry. That sentance not only qualifies, it wins the fucking gold medal.
