HP wank- Don't Tell Me I'm Wrong!
Story time, kids!

This person posts a bitter 'ship rant that speaks out against intolerant shippers claiming their 'ships to be canon, when they are very obviously not. She goes on to tell us we're all allowed to like any pairing we please, as long as we never dare say it's canon when it's not expressly stated in the books themselves. Fair enough.

Ragdoll then claims that Canon Is All- except when Rowling makes a mistake in the books that disagreed with something she said in an interview. Oh well, math's not JK's strong point, but it's enough to bring the wrath of canon!whores upon her poor head.

The wankage really starts pumping (excuse me) when Blacksatinrose points out an eensy bit of hypocrisy on the original poster's part. Her obviously aggressive use of logic is then ignored, kicked in the throat, and shot at with a flame-thrower by some toady named tephra and the ANGRY GOD OF CAPS LOCK (Ragdoll again), who not only completely misses the point but also drags irrelevant information screaming and kicking into the argument of whether R/S is a valid ship, and how oppressed the non-R/S shippers are. Woe unto them.

The bitter hypocrisy is suffocating.

(I still want to know how BSR proved anything about R/S shippers, when she wasn't even talking about R/S to begin with. It looked to me like she was the most reasonable one out of all of them. Am I wrong?)

It's a small wank, sure, but I thought it deserved to be mentioned for the sheer WTF factor of some of the replies. Stay tuned for further developments.

ETA: That tephra person wallows in smugness for no apparent reason, and BSR bows out gracefully, thus ending the debate.

Or does it???

dun dun dunnnn.....

Okay...

"Remus/Sirius isn't canon, and I hate people that ship it!"
"People can read the text differently."
"Dude, all you Remus/Sirius 'shippers suck donkey balls!"
"Um, I wasn't talking about Remus/Sirius 'shippers."
"See, you just proved my point!"

The hell?

It's like two different arguments in parallel universes got mixed up together because of a rift in the time/space continuum.

Or like tephra is unbelievably dumb.

Trying to use Earth logic on people provoking 'ship wars. Really. It's a waste of time. I once tried to read a Fiction Alley Park topic devoted to 'ship wars. Couldn't work out whether to laugh or cry.

I settled on laughing.

This whole canon/non-canon argument boggles me. What difference does it make? Even if Harry gets married at the end of the last book, there'll still be ten thousand fanfics written about how he's secretly pining for Draco/Neville/Snape/Hermione/the Weasleys/the giant squid, who is/are his true love. Canon's the basis for fanfiction, not the boundaries of it.

Although I could just be jealous, since I'm in only one fandom at the moment that has ANY canon justification for my OTP. Meh. *shrugs*

I guess it depends on how seriously people take their 'shipping. Some people are fanatical about it. Some realize it's a hobby, along with reading the books and writing fic/role-playing/whatever, no more, no less.

It baffles me sometimes how defensive people get about their pairings- it's as if disagreeing with them is equivalent to shooting their beloved puppy in the mouth.

Or, as we see here, disagreeing about anything, even if it's a preference for chunky peanut butter or smooth. That makes you a bitch, you know. How dare you.

Canon's the basis for fanfiction, not the boundaries of it.

Eh, it depends. Some people like to use fanfic to explore canon, some like to use it to explore what might have been, some like to use it for Hawt Sexx. Or, you know, some combination thereof. I think it's just a personal preference issue.

But what confuses me is why people care what others call their pairings. I mean, okay so one guy thinks Ron/Hermione is canon and one doesn't. So what? I don't get it.

Nope.

Actually its common sense. Someone who ships Remus/Sirius can do it in their spare time somewhere, true.

But the normal, clueless reader won't much like it, because they just want to read a fanmade continuation of the story, not some complete twisting of it that makes no sense whatsoever.

This 'canon' thing isn't because such people are mean and evil, its because in the ropinion, its pointless to read something that only has cardboard-cutouts of characters of the original story, but lacks its spirit.

There is a fine line between total crap and ok fanfiction. The later is based on canon and goes from there. TRhe first twists canon around and changes the characters completely.
R/S is the prime example for the later.

Of course, the fangirls will whine that omg its so oppressing and omg mean and wtf - but the average reader just won't accept their crappy version of the story. Its like inserting a Mary Sue version of the author into the story - that changes it tremendously and will not be liked by the average reader as well.

Fanfiction always brings changes, thats the whole point, but good fanfic is either AU or stays close to canon. So stop the crap about evil evil so intolerant canon-people. They have a good point. You don't bitch when people want proper spelling, right?
Well, this is no different. If you have to completely twist characters around to suit your fantasies, then label it AU. This goes for slash, changing existing relationships(an ElHazard fanfic springs to my mind, where the idiot creator hat Iffy killed off so the main character could have sex with Shayla because the author digged these two characters together - utter crap obviously), turning villains good without any base to do so, turning main characters evil/bitchy without any base to do so, and so on. In fact, most strolling of canon that has a large effect can be considered this way.
Would you like a fic which had, say, martians attack hogwarts, take over, and would now describe the wizards in concentrationcamps, oppressed by the evil martians, which in the end leads to a planet of the apes world? Of course not. Almost noone would want to read it. And the same is true with other relationships. Slash is just the bad prime-example there.

Awfully sorry, but couldn't find anywhere to post a wank request in this comm. Forgive me for slipping it in here, and hope it catches someone's attention.

It's about the further brave exploits of little_needle aka wankstar.

First of all, here's the the fairly recent fandom_wank about little_needle's hissy fit over Isiscolo, regarding the running of QuickQuote: http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/441562.html

Isiscolo's account of the whole thing: http://www.livejournal.com/users/isiscolo/159427.html

This ended with needle's grand (announcement of) departure from HP fandom :
http://www.livejournal.com/users/little_needle/261237.html

However, she had NO intention of giving up HER ownership of QQ.
Oh, no, she will hold onto it like grim death. Instead of handing over the management to someone else, she proceeded to recruit several new editors, amongst them titti, electricandroid, and pogrebin, who worked like serfs to produce issue after issue under her demanding scrutiny (needle herself did not seem to do any work):
http://www.livejournal.com/community/quickquote/41279.html

Unsurprisingly, not long after, titti, electricandroid et al make their departure (which was done discreetly behind the scenes, but they have let drop comments in various journals), and so needle, despite going through a "cancer scare" announces a new set of serfs to do her work: http://www.livejournal.com/community/quickquote/50348.html

A veritable bundle of energy, she also starts a new "exclusive" community for Harry/Draco fics, and invites well-known writers to join: http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=seekertoseeker

The "cancer scare" turned out to be not cancer at all, and darn don't I deserve some paid LJ time for this?: http://www.livejournal.com/users/wankstar/34399.html

The writers at seekertoseeker comm duly post some of their old stuff in a desultory fashion. (As far as I know) no one has bleated about not being invited to this comm. However, needle senses some discontent, so here is her wonderfully wank-tastic ranty rant from today! (has been stealthily edited several times since it was first posted to tone down her initial rantiness though):
http://www.livejournal.com/users/wankstar/35122.html

Favourite quote - "I have never failed at anything before."
Sorry about the length, I hope someone can make sense of this messy post, and post a coherent wank. Many thanks.

You know... I'm a Pottermaniac who's ships tend to be purely (for the most part) canon. I am definitely a canon whore.

Even so... I'd never, ever start a huge wanky flamewar over a ship/some other thing. It's just silly. It's like masturbating to a fencepost. It's rather pointless. Unless you like doing so, of course.
