And the Wank Goes Round And Round...
http://www.livejournal.com/~calvinandhobbes/392072.html?thread=2347912#t2347912

Long story short. OP sees one of those Calvin-kneeling-by-a-cross stickers and posts a very open-ended post to the Calvin and Hobbes LJ Community. Comments include plagiarism, misuse of images, questioning Bill Watterson's marketing sense, Christian versus anti-Christian wankery, and the First Amendment used to justify all sorts of asshatry. And there was wanking on all sides.. Yay, verily.

Steered toward me by a friend.

In a wierd, nonsensical way, you're right. The "cross Calvin" and "peeing Calvin" stickers are a loose parallel to the Jesus and Darwin fish that you also see on cars.

Heh. Except that if you put both the Jesus and Darwin fishes on a car they'd just show clashing ideologies. Whereas putting the kneeling and peeing Calvin ones together acutally becomes a Christian-bashing statement. Hmmm...intriguing.

See, here I would think that Jesus Fish + Darwin Fish = Christian who believes the Bible's creation story was meant to be taken allegorically, and was pissed off by all the anti-science rhetoric that people spread in the name of their God.

And, because it's late... OMGjesusfishxdarwinfishtheirloveissoa'stopbeingonmyside'statement.

Agreeing with [info]beccastareyes. For a long time I had planned to put both fish on my bumper with a heart in-between. Perhaps I'd best get around to it.

The irony, of course, is that Bill Watterston *never* licensed his creations for marketing of any kind. He fought licensing tooth and nail until the syndicate finally gave in. So all those Calvin-peeing stickers? Illegal. This one? Illegal. Anything else you might see with Calvin and Hobbes outside the strip? Illegal. Wankery? Fun!

Agreed. And I respect that decision on his part. Although that didn't stop me from animating the drawings on the back cover of one of the large collections eight years ago because I thought they looked like they could be sequenced and then making it into an icon. But icons are a special case, right? Right? [looks anxious]

It must have really sucked trying to protect that copywrite. 'Cause if you don't want other people using your work to make money, then you must not want to save whales/ love Jesus/ pee on Ford.

Of course, it's all going to a man with a print shop named Juan, and not actually to the whales, or the church or Chevrolet. But it's the thought that counts, and Juan scolds you from his Caddy-- how dare you sully the innocent name of Calvin with your vile talk of money and who gets it in what illegal way.

Um, what is this about the Dursleys' "becoming Christians"?? I mean, they're middle-class British people, for Pete's sake. What were they before, Sikhs? Why the hell do fundies constantly throw around the word "Christian" as if it refers only and solely to their little sects? It's a fucking UMBRELLA word. It refers to ALL worshippers of Jesus, be they Baptist, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, Gnostic, Ethiopian, what-have-you. Who the hell gave these guys the across-the-board copywrite to that word?

As Woody Allen said, if Jesus ever came back and saw what people were doing in his name, he'd never stop throwing up.

Feh.

I think the fact that he didn't make a new paragraph when someone else speaks scared me more than the story content. The shit with Harry's bolt turning into the cross was scary, though. I think it means Voldemort is now God. Creepy.

Hmm...so, having a Calvin kneeling in front of a cross on the back of my car shoves my religion in your face. Okay, then everyone with a political sticker, sports team sticker, television show sticker (me, w00t), band sticker, "my student is an honor student at" sticker, and otherwise sticker that is not clear (since colors can be offensive too, what if red isn't my favorite?) needs to please take the stickers off their cars, because dammit, I don't want to have to process the pros and cons of whatever it is your bumper's peddling while dodging your ass after you cut me off in rush hour traffic.

I've just thought it was ridiculous, since the only thing Calvin bows to is the T.V. set.

It's like having Hannibal Lecter on a sticker for vegatarianism.

Eh. I used to really like this comic. Still do, as a matter of fact. The only C & H theory I ever found amusing was the Fight Club/C & H comparisons list. Calvin in front of a cross... that somehow seems an oxymoron.
