Eclecti-wank
I'm surprised this hasn't been reported here yet, and the message archives ARE public.

Basically, the mailing list for Eclecticon (a gen/slash media con in Newark, NJ) has been a steaming pile of wank for the past 2 weeks or so as people began to wonder WTF was actually up with the con this year, was it happening at all, since there's been jackshit updated about it in, like, forever.

The fun starts around post #1811 here and just goes onward for at least 4 pages or so of posts, and counting.

I'm too lazy to quote much, but let's just say it covers all the bases from gen/slash fan clashes, the 2000 elections, hotel conditions, the MIA con-chair and onward and...upward? Or should that be downward?

(I shamefully admit to contributing one comment along the WTF lines, but didn't think it was quite enough to shift this over to i_wank...)

I went to Eclecticon once and had a fantastic time. I wish I could go every year, but it's far enough away so that airfare/job/time etc gets in the way. I know and really like the con chair, and she must be having some serious problems right now. Someone on the list suggested delegating more, but the problem with anything like this is having people who you can trust to delegate it to. And I'm not gonna name names here, but one of the folks wanking away on that list is a member of the con com. So, yeah.

It's early enough in the morning that I read that as "affair/job/time" and I was about to be all "you go, girl!"

I've gone & worked the dealer's room like the past 5-6 years in a row, and this is the first year I've had to just say no and try working another con. It's a shame, because on the one hand it IS a con I've enjoyed attending dearly, but sometimes I have to put business above all else and when I lose money working a con one year, I need some actual assurance that things will be better the next before I'll come back and give it another try. And having a MIA conchair and no visible/obvious work to promote the con and get back attendance does not do much for that assurance.

I get the feeling there's just a big build up of little problems that are finally--or at least need to finally--be dealt with to get the con up and really rolling again the way it should be.

Ah...the "damaged keyboard". Con chair has been waiting for a new keyboard for ages now and can't post messages without it.

Having known con chair for over 15 years, and having (regretfully) had a few business dealings with her, I can attest that when things get even the tiniest bit stressful for her, "something happens" and no one will hear from her for a very, very long time.

She hates confrontation and will go to amazing lengths to avoid it.

Sad to see some things never change.

Agreed. She's a nice lady, but working with her successfully requires near-infinite patience.

Was the first Eclecticon the one held the weekend the Gulf War broke out and nicknamed SaddamCon by the attendees?

Newark's had Eclecticon for years. And I know there were some other cons held there in the late '80s....

I didn't realize Newark was better for anything else than getting lost, construction, and having my car broken into.
