Full Metal 9/11 Canon-Rape "If You Don't Like It, STFU" Wankery.
First report. I bring cute little Full Metal/politics/anime-is-not-reality wank.

It begins in over in [info]fm_alchemist as [info]rootoftheoracle posts a manip of Roy Mustang at Ground Zero.

There's praise of the manip. All goes well until [info]tanzy remarks "Wow, that's incredibly tasteless..." There's there's some fairly civilized discussion that nonetheless leads up to the bizarre

Roy Mustang has no connection with 9/11, nor does his character have the motivations and feelings that the original poster seems to attribute to him. Roy wouldn’t be crying under his cap at Ground Zero. He’s an individual that’s faced the realities of war and chosen to fight against the system by trying to change it from within (i.e. his desire to replace the Furher and change the way the military does business). If anything, Roy is politically closer to a freedom fighter (the political correct term for terrorists that we like) than the people present at the 9/11 ceremonies. (So... Roy is a terrorist?) The feelings that these events put in the forefront and highlight -blind patriotism and an unquestioning acceptance of authority- are exactly the types of things that Roy as a character objects too and is trying to change. In the same way that Roy doesn’t like how the public in FMA has generally accepted the Military’s position that Ishbalites are dangerous and need to be removed (analogous in many ways to our own governments position on Arabs and Islam) because they might be harboring terrorists. If Roy were to be placed in the American political spectrum, it is far more likely that he would be one of the individuals questioning what created the environment for an attack like 9/11 to take place, not one of the people wailing over the loss of human life and attending ceremonies commemorating the event.

Later, however, [info]_cthebloodflow takes a stand against the handful of people who have voiced disapproval.

[info]_cthebloodflow: There's no meaning to be mean or rude, but the meaning to make a connection. [...] Don't bash just because you think it's tasteless and stuff. It makes others feel bad and they'll start to ponder about things themselves. (Watch out, Big Brother! They're starting to think!) Then, just because of you input, they turn into some one completely different. (Oh noes!) (>__>) Yadda yadda yadda.

[info]tanzy: First, this is EXACTLY the reason it's tasteless. It trivializes and diminishes the real suffering and pain that the event caused so you can feel a little better about yourself.

Second, why is it so horrible that you think about what's happened instead of acting like a 2 year old and trying to ignore it or make it pretty? God forbid you start thinking critically about the world and form rational opinions like an adult.

[info]_cthebloodflow: (~__~) WTF? You're a moron. (Ph34r her witty comebacks.) I really don't care about what happened 3 years ago. I could really give a crap about it. Hell, I just have been having a really f-ed up day and you just made it worse. :D Congrats, moron. (^__^)

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, [info]rootoftheoracle posts a response to everyone who dissed her manip before (completely missing the point of most of the criticism).

Now, I don't hate other countries just because I slapped roy on the 9/11 pictures. This is about mourning. You guys are telling me that Roy can't mourn at all? John Pope, French President (What about the French prime minister, eh? Eh?), the British Prime Minister Tony Blair they have mourn for the victim of 9/11 attack, they can do it. It like I'm american and I can't mourn for other countries at all? Beside, Roy isn't an american, nor european... He doesn't exist! Why can't he mourn over so many people who have die in WTC, Petagon, and Pennsilvanna? Now tell me why? All I'm just trying to do is make these fellow American who have been in this community feel better and lighten up abit. If you don't like it at all why did you get involve? You should have shut up and ignore it or at lease say "Oh that is a nice edit." (All of you, stop thiking critically and worship my manip.)
I have been through bad time today and now you are making me feel like I'm sinking down to my feet and I know I'm not the only one going through it.. All I'm trying to do is lighten up abit during the depressing day, and thank you for making it worse... Well, Okay! I'll slap Roy mourning for the French people from the war, Arizona Memorial from the Pearl Harbour war, Persian Gulf war, and the attack of the Russian School to make you and your country feel better, and make you feel satified and non-offensive. All, I'm just saying feel free to slap Roy anywhere to make you and your fellow country feel better. He free to everyone. It not like that Roy have "real" feelings and he like a amuse oneself.
However, this got nothing to do with the Ishvar war in FMA nor the political, war in iraq, hunting bin laden, anti-bush, all that government crap in real life. Bringing it up isn't gonna do any good. Althought I dislike getting involve with the political shits and the government. I didn't register to vote either. All I just do is stay out of it and enjoy other thing that I can do.
All I can say is get a grip and don't take things too purposefully. I don't want to be your inquisitor and nor do you.

[info]oamichano: She has every right to publish what she wants on here---isn't that one of the rights you patriots wail and moan about so much? I'm not American and I noticed how close minded many Americans are. If you don't like the way this person is mourning, IGNORE IT. She is not intruding upon your lives or forcing herself upon your mourning in any way---she is only posting it for the people who may appreciate it. If you don't like it, you can walk away and not look at it again. You don't have to get all up in her face about it. This is the way she mourns. You have your own. Flaming her is not necessary.

[info]everlasting_day: You're missing the point spectacularly. I think it's pretty obvious, Roy Mustang is a fictional character who has no place in an event like mourning for such a real and terrible event as 9/11. It's that simple. I 100% agree with girl_starfish - she's said it best.

[info]rosa_aquafire: I`m not offended, probably because I`m not an American and I don`t give a damn, but even if I WERE, WTF is wrong with Roy being a mourner at 9/11 ceremonies? Is she had posted Roy looking uber bored, or posted Roy pointing and laughing, THEN we would have a reason to be offended. But as it is? Frig. Things are only as offensive as you are anal. </i>Hey, that's actually a great quote.

I was hoping that there'd be a huge "OMG the Ishbal people are like Muslims -- if you're a true fan of FMA, vote Kerry '04!!1!" wank sometime before the series ended, but this is close enough.

Edit: Now there's some OMG, the papacy is teh eval!!1! and random Christianity sucks miniwanks pointed out by a helpful anonymouse.

*twitches*

If this wank ever happens, pardon me while I stab myself in the heart with a spork. Lord, what fools these mortals be.

If I was American, I'd vote Kerry regardless of whether the Ishbarites are "like Muslims" or not, but that's another wank altogether. :D

The ironic part is that some of people getting upset over the image AREN'T AMERICANS.

"Contrary to expectations in a funny way, some of the people getting upset aren't Americans?" Wouldn't that bolster the claim that it's a tasteless image, especially since Canada's national pastime is standing at the border, pointing and laughing?

Of course, America's national pastime is making more money and being more important in international matters than Canada. But really, sometimes at night, we cry, in our beds of McDonald's french fries and money. If only Canada would like us...

I pretty much agree with Tanzy's stuff, though I don't know the first thing about FMA and how the characters in it might react. I'm not American, and maybe that's got something to do with my sentiments on this issue, but sometimes it seems like all the emphasis is placed on the aftermath so nobody thinks about why it happened in the first place. The way some people react, you'd think it was the first terrorist attack ever. And I'm worried about ever posting my thoughts over the issue on my personal journal at LJ, because I don't want to upset anyone on my FList. I've always been more pragmatic than sympathetic, and I worry that a lot of the reactions to 9/11 are simply going to lead to larger and more devastating attacks around the world, because suddenly terrorism gets your message across far better than more peaceful methods protesting.

9/11 is nothing more than politics by now(when a war is started in its name, it's politics, the end). I want people to keep their politics out of my fantasy. Mourn with your friends on your own journal if you'd like. I'm not hanging on the Hagaren com to be reminded about the world's rotten state, thanks.

Ah, hell, why don't I go watch that wonderful vid where they shoot down a wounded Iraqi and laugh? I'm just in the right mood for it now. It'll remind me why it's good to be rich and not poor like them. /sarcasm

As an American, I don't find it offensive. I find it trite, stupid, pointless and irritating, but not offensive. I mean, he's a cartoon character who's canon does not recognize the event his image is being used to comemorate (I think I spelled that wrong). How pointless can you get?

The photoshoppery, while stupid, didn't offend me, but to me this oamichano chick is almost aggressively irritating. I looked up "Irony" in the dictionary once, and definition number three was "when a teenaged girl who is sporting a mighty femme-boner for gross generalizations accuses an entire nation of being closed-minded and then starts backpedaling as if she were competing in the Bizzaro World Tour de France". Whoo-ee.

Aaah...I remember this. I remember looking at it and going "...ooookay..." Not offensive, just...weird.

I also noticed how the OP had posted more than a few manips that day, all of which were pretty "...why are you posting again?"

Ah well. And FMA fans think the dub is the worst of their problems.

*laughs* I was never offended at the pictures, it would take a hell of a lot more than something stupid to truly offend me these days.

Tasteless and shallow? Yes. Personally offended? Nah. ;D

I just have a low tolerance for people doing (what I consider) stupid things. And this was the second or third item on LJ that had made me "....." that day and was (un)lucky enough to draw my ire.

I'll certianly be the first to admit that I'm generally disgusted by the "OMG, PITY ME, HOW CAN I CONTINUE LIVING? T_T" reaction that so many Americans have had to 9/11. As an American myself, I don't understand how other people were so completely unaware of the rest of the world, but that's something others have already talked about here in the comment and I've said before previously. Undoubtedly my personal political stance influenced my reaction.

All the stuff about Roy's character was simply an effort to illustrate my point about appropriateness.
