George Lucas and the Wank of Ages
So the other day, George Lucas gives an interview regarding the new SW DVD set. It contains this quote:

"The thing about science-fiction fans and `Star Wars’ fans is they’re very independent-thinking people. They all think outside the box, but they all have very strong ideas about what should happen, and they think it should be their way. Which is fine, except I’m making the movies, so I should have it my way."

LJ user spacedowtjedi posts it to the starwars community, saying:

Here's what I hate : HES RIGHT, SO RIGHT. It's his stuff, he should do what he wants, I know in his position I WOULD
The flipside, If feel just as strongly for certain things to remain 'sacred' Or changes that shouldn't have happened.
I think I will now remember this quote, try to use it whenever I get upset about something. As much as we feel it's OURS , It's also his..

Naturally, people disagree. Well, mostly petshopboy1983:

I am sick of this line of horseshit that they are his movies and he can fuck them up if he wants. What a cop out. They are not really his movies. The only reason he has any money to tamper with them in the first place is becase WE payed for it. At worst we are stock holders, executive producers at best.
Grow some balls, fanboys. The ladies find it appealing.

And of course, more wangst over how much right George has to alter his own movies. Because god forbid we just be resigned to this by now.

How well you have been trained. Try thinking outside your little box.

There I was thinking that Lucas was basically a fanboy with some talent and some good luck and, as a result, an assload of cash, and now I find out that he's some sort of brainwashing criminal mastermind.

Thank god for the teh internet, or I would never have known!

(I'll still forgive him anything, up to and including "the Greedo incident", just because he axed the "yub yub" song at the end of RotJ.)

Axing the yub yub song is the one and only thing I will *not* forgive him for.

That was the coolest thing in the movies, man! The new ending is just lame.

But I thought the ladies found Xena appealing, and therefore, it's bad?

(I knew I know that name somewhere)

Wow... that's a really terrifying piece of logic, right there. In fact, I would love for someone to mouth that off to, say, J.K. Rowling and see how far they get with it.

Better keep that in mind, young lady: if you change a word in your book, we stock holders will have to come after you.

Oh no, I've seen that excuse before. People are always so quick to blame the blind, amnesiac evil twin. It's rampant discrimination, or plagiarism, or something sinister like that.

I pretty much hate many of the changes-most of all the inclusion of Jabba in Ep4. But to say it's not his right is just plain silly. (Still, I wish the DVDs would contain both versions. Since they don't, I'll be sticking with my VHS tapes until Lucasfilm release the original versions of the Trilogy.)

Talk about old fucking hat. The rest of us figured out that George is a fuckwit around the mid-90s when he created the gratuitous Special Editions. And after Phantom Menace, we gave up any and all semblance of hope. He's a giant penis, people. The best we can do is cuddle our old VHS tapes and avoid the spooge.

But then, that's what fandom_wank is all about, eh? Some arguments will never ever be allowed to get old. And we mock.

Suck off a Stormtrooper (I probably wrote that wrong), kthnxbi.

Executive producers? That's really too rich.

Lucas is a cock, but I understand his point of view to some extent. I mean, I know a lot of my old writings suck ass. I'm constantly tempted to rewrite some old fics I have on my FF.net account. Sure, there might be people who liked the old versions better, but I'd feel perfectly okay doing that as it's my work. They can keep their older versions, read them if they like and be happy.

Then again, these are MOVIES we're talking about and movies and stories are very different in terms of how to edit them. The changes will be more dramatic in movies. You notice them easier. And one of my old fanfics has probably 10-20 fans and Star Wars, on the other hand...

I still think it's no use to whine about it all the friggin' time or claim Star Wars is (c) SW Fans and Geeks All Over the World instead of (c) Lucas. These are *just* new editions. The original versions remain the originals and to some of us fans, they're the REAL SW. To others, SE's are their first SW-experience and therefore the closest to their heart. A new generation will grow up to love the DVD-versions.

How come it matters so much? I still remember the "RAPED MY CHILDHOOD OMG!"-wank.

Hey, the man's got a point. Even if it is kind of silly (and greedy) to keep retconning the stupidest details into and out of the movies every few years, it's not as if George Lucas ever lost money milking the Star Wars franchise.

And guess where all these geeks will be, come Tuesday morning (?) when the stores open?

For fuck's sake, my fandom needs to shut the hell up. I mean, Lucas does a lot of stupid shit with the SW franchise, but when there's a demand he'll provide a supply. I know where I'LL be spending money Monday morning.

More to the point, I know where I *won't* be spending mine. If enough people hold out for at least having the option of the original version, maybe Lucas will grab a clue and give us poor consumer schmucks a choice.

Hmm. I'm gonna go jot a letter to Warner Brothers. I've been a fan of Looney Tunes since I was a little kid, and I'm just not pleased with the direction they're taking it. Of course, I am entitled, seeing as how I've been a fan so long.

*headdesk*

Geez, people...just because you've been his fan for so long doesn't mean Lucas HAS to do anything you deem "right". It's still his story. If he wants to keep changing fifteen seconds of footage every four years and release a new copy, that's his right. Your right is to not buy it, should you feel those fifteen seconds is not worth the money.

Though, isn't this the first time it's been on DVD? I thought that was the big huge reason the latest release was supposed to rock the world to the ground.

Teh irony... that all the most popular shit in the SW universe had its script written by someone else, or was ripped off from smaurai flicks.

It burns.

Where do fans get the idea that they own whatever book/movie/show that they are fans of? There's a lot of this happening with the Live Action Evangelion movie that's in the works. Sorry, but buying the DVDs is not the same as buying the rights to a movie.
The fans have no power...
