Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Fan-Fucking-tastic
Entry tags:fandom: harry potter, pairing wars, your kink is not okay

There IS NOTHING KINKY about Snape/Harry! Uh. Wha?
There's this really great little community on LJ called ship_manifesto whose sole purpose is for writers to post essays talking about why they 'ship specific pairings. No shipping wars are allowed, though concrit on the various essays is allowed. Everything's gone hunky dory for a long while and I've learned all about various fandoms and pairings through it. [/shameless plug for friend's nifty comm.]

Anyway, [info]tigress35 posted this Snape/Harry 'ship manifesto, in which she details why this pairing hits her Teacher/Student and sub/dom kinks for her. The essays here, you'll recall, are supposed to be about why writers *personally* 'ship the pairings, not about why the pairing should be your OTP, too.

Alan Rickman and Daniel Radcliffe are both good-looking and charismatic people, which makes the pairing work for me on a purely aesthetic level (of course, some do not like picturing the characters based on the film actors). Yet, beyond that, I personally have a Teacher/Student and Experienced/Innocent kink. I love the idea of the experienced man (although stories where Snape is inexperienced despite his years are intriguing as well) debauching the innocent.

Anyway, some people are really into her essay, and some people make polite your kink is not my kink but that's OK! kinds of posts.

[info]kelex also (at first) politely disagrees that her story was about Teacher/Student/abuse kink at all, but Tigress admits that it hit her kink anyway, whether the writers intended it to or not, what with artistic intent being different than artistic effectiveness and all. Also, she doesn't think Kelex is being all that polite. It kind of disintegrates and mushrooms from there, and comments are turned off for a couple of hours by the mods to allow everyone to cool off, but opened back up the same day.

The post then immediately becomes a magnet for irrationally angry/distraught people, with:

1. [info]alchemia stating how very very sad this post made her (*woe!) and went on to post in her own LJ how personally offended she is that no one can respond to her brilliant LJ comment for four whole hours.

2. People who are offended that their story was recced as a kink fic and helpfully provide their own preferred lingo (it's a "forced bondage" story, dammit, not a PWP!!)

3. In the "Everyone's a damned critic" category is [info]anais_rhys, who trolls that forget the shipping debate - your story summarizing pains meeeeee!

4. The one lone voice of reason wondering can't we all just get along?

Silly girl. Of course not. This is the Harry Potter fandom we're talking about.

ETA: [info]ladysorka has helpfully provided a link to her own wanking, in which she is very, very ashamed that she gets off on is involved with this pairing, when other people get off on are into it for reasons she poopoos. I am dying. From the laughter.

Oh god. People expect the essays to detail why a certain pairing is pop instead of why the writer ships it?

Boy am I gonna be in deep shit later when I post mine...

The uproar about getting recced... Shit, I'd be glad to get recced in any damn context! WTF is wrong with HP fandom?

I read that wank, and also read the whole HarryPolitics wank in this comm earlier this week, and I felt the urge to post "Also, the fact that Snape is obviously a staunch old-money Republican and Harry like all Gryffindors is a hopeless bleeding heart Democrat is really hawt."

Would that be wrong of me, do you think? *smiles beatifically*

Was anyone else bothered by alchemia's long-winded, incredibly pretentious post? "My story is not 'angst and all that'! You aren't reccing my story right!" God, get over it.

People need to understand that once you post something you've written on a public forum, the public's reaction to the text is out of your hands. If I have a "Snape wearing black" kink, and I read your story because it includes Snape wearing black, you can't tell me that's not why I should read it, or that's not what I should get out of it. I'll read it why ever and however I like.

It seems like she saw her story as one of the rec'ed in a controversial post, wanted to show off as being the author, and considered the fact that she was tangentially (at best) involved in the kerfluffle as an excuse to garner attention for herself. Ack.

And also: "communitie's"? Christ, and this person wrote something that was rec'ed?

O noes! But you're, like, totally reducing the story to nothing but kink! And that's just wrong!

Yes, because having a kink for some aspect of an author's story totally strips the entire thing of any other possible redeeming value. Like, totally.

What amazed me most about this particular wank was the writers. Who write things. Who complained about someone's take on a pairing and relevant stories. In a community where you write an essay about your take on a pairing. Where anyone can sign up to write an essay.

Write. Writers. Anyone.

Don't forget that either the mod or the poster deleted one of the threads before restoring comments. (I know, because I posted in that thread. It was a thread that denigrated the recs listed, saying that many of them were not very good fic.) That's wanky right there, methinks, although I think it would have been reasonable to freeze discussion on those stories as off-topic.

The essays here, you'll recall, are supposed to be about why writers *personally* 'ship the pairings, not about why the pairing should be your OTP, too.

Is that so? That's not the impression I got from the comm mod when she was setting up the comm.

IMHO the writer of this particular essay was out of her depth. And listing recs without links because "she didn't have time to look them up" suggests she wasn't taking this very seriously.

OK. I'm just gonna come out and say it. Straight women shouldn't be writing gay porn slash if they can't accept that it is about sex!

I mean, can they actually hear themslevs? This fic has "forced bondage" (not kink, god no, not anything kinky, that would be weird!) and is about the deep and flowery romance of a 50 year old male in authority non-consensually buggering a 13 year old boy.

Uh huh. Somewhere, a leather daddy is laughing. Really fucking hard.

And for folks who don't get the Rickman is sexy thing, one word. Closetland. Oh yeah........

Personally I find Snape/Harry fics don't float my boat either but then the same applies to an awful lot more of the Harry Potter fandom. The whole arena just seems to attract wankers - end of story. I can't see the logic of making long and boring posts about it. Just deal with it and move on.
