on the JKR note, she does have editors, and they do correct her work, sometimes too much, which showed with the GoF order thing.
on the Anne Rice "I'm above needing one", even the worst fanfic writers (mostly) recognize the need for a beta, and go hunging. Not that it does any good most of the time, but there you go. Rice could take some advice from the people she's trying to imitate...
