Someone wrote in [info]fandom_wank,
Voices that talk and talk towards, nothing
All talent waxes and wanes.

Few if any publish consistently good and well rounded books throughout their career.

It would be wrong to think Mrs.Rice one of those exceptional few.
Writers have a habit of veering into the formulaic, the shoddy and the weak throughout the ups and downs of their career.

So why should there be surprise Mrs.Rice has done it again. Any who read the 'Queen of the Damned' would be aware she showed signs of a talent and voice that would be erratic, to say the least, but then 'The Mummy' was released. Proving like any reasonably talent author, she could still pull something out of the bag.

I just have to wonder if all the responses in and around this topic (those in bashing/those in support) are so voluminous due to the fact of Mrs.Rice's fame. I mean, it's only natural for moths to gather and flutter around a flame.

And hey;

This is just like a National Enquirer letters section for literary types. Where those trailer types and other people with something missing in their lives, mince about the comings and goings, the how comes and what ifs of celebrity.

So she wrote another woeful book, granted I haven't read it and I don't intend to - Memnoch, with it's turgid pages of something I can find dribbled out on fanfic pages, was nearly enough for me.

It's nice, however, we've reached a point where an author can round angrily on her detractors. Even if it was poorly constructed and base. There has got to some sort of appreciation for the fact we have that, that it's not locked away to private correspondence anymore.

I'd have better to say about the critics on Amazon and on here, if the quality of comments was just a little higher. Grade school humour, slang and limp comments bare little constructive value. Maybe if people took the time to write up a proper scathing review - it might be possible to sway public opinion on an author whose weak pulp turn out is as high as her actual turn out of good works. I, for one, would like a heavy dose of reality taken with all Rice's books and not the near vehement sycophancy you find around the internet. Possibly seeing the author taken down a notch.

I'm just surprised neither her critics (both good and bad) and the author herself, didn't roll out the cock jokes sooner. Such is/was their level of any relevant maturity.

We see fanatical fans in the music and movie world all the time; those who doggedly defend Mrs.Rice are no different; why should the literary world be any different, anyway. The goths, the vamp-heads, the alt-heads and the vaguely normal people who revere her...-shrugs- "In the kingdom of the blind..."

It's all good to clench your eyes at every new release and chant "it's good, it's great." just as it is to do the opposite. Clarity is never a given when it comes to star worship.

Still, I can't help but feel (and repeat myself) that if a clinical eye was taken to this; the unholy arrogance spawned by this might have to wake up. Surgically, take the books apart, for good or for bad. Give her something to work with.

I, for one, am sick of the vaguely patronising air I get from her books, but, can't help wondering if;
of late - in her work, if it's not just the grasped ramblings of an old woman in the twilight of her career and whether her response was the same, bidden by a few glasses of wine, fired off without thought in a rage that so many pampered stars get.

(Only posted anon because it keeps telling me, my journal doesn't exist)
