"Hacking" Wank

This is a beautiful end to the LotR Mithril wank - come, read, appreciate the wankery!

Way back in the beginning of September, a wank was posted by ebbrowning about those brave Mithril Award critics who had their LJs cruelly hacked. Or so they said.

Entertaining wankery ensued, all now deleted (hmmm?) from F_W. (For the curious though, here's the first and the second half of a cached page.)

But there are interesting twists to the story.

The sum and substance of the piteous tale was that our brave heroes posted material that made fun of the MAs. Their sad claim: that the MAs or HASA had harvested IP addresses and somehow used these to hack into the LJs involved. Both Lindorien and Agent Tweed loudly trumpeted the alleged hack job on their journals. Many in the fandom were understandably concerned, and expressed sympathy and outrage.

There were sinister intimations from Lindorien, freely spread, that she knew the culprits to be admins or "members close to admins" at the MAs or HASA. Why these unnamed horrible criminals from HASA would delete material critical of the MAs as opposed to material critical of HASA was never explained.

The next claim was that Misarray, who had recently friended Lindorien, had also been hacked.

Funny thing about this.

Misarray lost comments that were 6 months old, unrelated to the Mithril Awards, and in Dutch. Misarray says she doesn't even know what HASA is. That makes it kind of hard to steal her HASA password; one would think?

Agent Tweed later said she was informed "as the hack was happening and managed to protect her LJ. (Oh? How clever of you! Please share the method used!) So next the admission that NOTHING was actually missing from Agent Tweed's LJ.

Many posters at F_W and other LJs pointed out the obvious - LJ occasionally eats comments, or groups of comments, and several completely unrelated LJs have had this happen recently (not to mention the "memories" meltdown.) There is a mundane explanation; no sinister evil-doer is necessary. Of course, it's much more dramatic to have "enemies" who consider your comments so important that they must be wiped out.

LJ tech support has a few words about these accusations, too. Agent Tweed posted that LJ abuse replied that"everything appeared perfectly legitimate on the servers."What a surprise!

But the best of all, Kiddies! At least two of those criminally "deleted" posts supposedly obliterated by the Mithril Masterminds of Evil? The links don't lead to an "entry not found" but to "You are not authorized to view this protected entry." (and don't worry if it suddenly disappears - I've got a screencap).

Oh the evil of it! A dastardly hacker broke in and set entries to private without the LJ owner realizing it! Brilliant!

Poor Lindorien. Don't worry, LJ tells you how to make them public again. Go here to read about it.

No surprise that many of these entries have now been set to private, or deleted. And that the original F_W thread has disappeared, as has a discussion/accusation thread started by Lindorien on the MA LJ. In fact, the LJ owner herself seems to have disappeared just like her comments.

What a beautiful wank!

Would the 'Admin Console' be any help determining possible hacking?

I wonder is it possible to see what IP addresses actions and/or logins were performed from on an LJ account from the 'admin console' of a given user? Any computer geniuses out there have any idea? It would clear up if someone had been messing at your account or if it was just LJ being quirky.

Even the abuse team doesn't have tools that can tell what IPs are being used to log in and use an account - or at least they didn't when I was on the team. Only thing IP addresses are visibly logged on are comments, and that's only if the journal the comment is posted in has IP logging turned on. And then they're only visible to the owner of that journal.

Knowing your IP address isn't going to help break into LJ. It could help a hacker break into your computer if you have a static IP address.

The Fandom Wank entry was deleted?? But... but... why?

It was funny how adamant those people were in insisting that anyone who thought the hack story was BS were either in league with the alleged "hackers" or JUST DIDN'T UNDERSTAND.

I think it was because several people started disagreeing with the OP (who had posted the entry as a wank because of the "hacking") that the journals had been hacked at all. Several anonymice on both sides showed up, and a few F_W members pointed out- as this post says- that there were alternative, and reasonable, explanations. That entry started making Lindorien's/Agent_Tweed's cases look bad, or at least questionable, so it had to go.

What I think anyway. *wonders if she will now be attacked for being anti-anti-Mithril*

The accusations were hilarious in the first place - you can't hack into someone's LJ just by knowing their IP address. The IP address isn't some secret master key to everything you do on the intarweb.

Of course not. IP addresses are all about mind control, didn't you know? Once you have someone's IP address, you can control their very soul.

It's how Bush won the last election. I heard so from some Democrat in Florida that I just made up so it must be true.

Yes indeedy, the Mithril LiveJournal. Thank you, friend! Unfortunately though, that forum is two threads fewer than it used to be, on account of their originator Lindorien since deleting them. But lest we forget, I've taken screencaps of the cached page. Say cheese!

Here's no longer existent thread #1, and here's no longer existent thread #2. Whoops, that shot cuts off, so here's the bottom. Wouldn't want anyone overlooking the fact that it contained 76 comments Lindorien felt entitled to destroy, only 11 of which were her own. Plus the dozens in the other thread, naturally.

But let this not distract from the wank! After all, those hacking claims have yet to be retracted. Makes you wonder: whosoever would be capable of, dare I say even disposed to the impromptu deletion of other people's material? hmmm

Well I have to say I'm relieved that it's over in some way, because I don't take myself for being too much of a computer geek, but I do know that the logistics of actually hacking their LJ's are in my opinion just not worth the effort anyone would have had to have gone through to possibly actually maybe get into someone's LJ.

It's nice to see the first Fandom Wank entry I've written in... gosh, months is so properly confusing that I can barely tell what fandom the wank is for. It's only when I'm befuddled, that I really know I'm here.
