Current mood:hurricane party!

Actor Sean Astin (Sam Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings films) has written a book about some of his experiences making the films in New Zealand. Apparently, some fans, for reasons I can't quite understand, thought that Sean, General Nice Guy, was going to deliver some juicy gossip about teh gay Domlijah secks the behind-the-scenes escapades of the LOTR cast. Of course, they are disappointed that the book is (gasp!) all about Sean Astin, and not about his obsessive sekrit love for Elijah Wood dishing like a disciple of Ted C.

That's just a little too much for me.

"He wrote a book about his experiences, and it talks about his experiences. That's not what I wanted to read about, I want my money back!"

That's like going to see Titanic and being annoyed that there's a boat.

Who wants to see some rusty tub sink? They should have used Leo as Titanic, he sank like a stone and had better hair.

......

What were they expecting? They can't honestly think Sean Astin (or anyone, for that matter. Besides Kitty Kelly maybe) would write some tell-all sexploit detailing anything and everything sordid and interesting?

Basically it's an autobiography... it's all Sean... and not in a good way.

But aren't autobiographies supposed to be about the person who wrote them?

Or did I slip into Opposite Planet again?

There is nothing Sean Astin can do that is not evil. Quite literally nothing. When he spent hours helping people trapped in train tunnels during the big blackout in NYC in the summer of 2002, these same people shrieked for days about how disgusting it was that he would try to capitalize on a tragedy to get good press for himself. He is a horrible, demented, sick person, and there anything he does or ever will do is ipso facto horrible, demented and sick.

i didn't like the book
[info]dana
2004-09-26 08:03 am UTC (link)
It wasn't the fact that it was all about him that got me, because yeah, this is Sean Astin, I wasn't expecting an indepth, sensitive analysis of Tolkien or the special affects, or the scenary in New Zealand. It's the fact that he complained pretty much about everything, and spent pages and pages justifying why he felt so upset. He puts a damper on the whole "enjoying the book" experience.

He pretty much had disagreements/tension with Peter Jackson, Sir Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, John Rhys-Davies and Fran Walsh. Even his wife had to tell him off a couple of times for his behaviour.

I think Ian Smith says it best in his review on Amazon.com. But, that's my personal opinion and I keep saying, over and over again, I'm not a Sean Astin fan.

Also, if you write a book, be ready for the criticism, unfortunately, judging by the personality that came across in his book, Sean Astin will be least able to deal with that.

And a new Tinhat rears its ugly head
[info]westmoon
2004-09-26 08:17 am UTC (link)
From Sexy Roo:

I like Sean, always have, but he is one screwed up dude. Most of it is obviously due to his genetics and upbringing (I mean how could you not be scarred by the kinda shite Sean and Mac went through as kids), but he's got some serious issues nowadays that I don't see as getting resolved; eg, his obvious jealousy of Orlando, his daddy-figure relationship with Elijah, the fact that in 250 pages he's only mentioned Dommie once or twice (oh, the ABCD incident at the NY TTT prem, say it ain't so!) and much more ...

...

Hmmm, maybe he was so miserable cuz he wasn't getting shagged six ways to Sunday like all the other (read: single/gay) guys! LOL! Lotrips RULEZ baybee!!11!1!! :D

Wow. All she left out was Sean raping Elijah and then eating babies. But she's got pretty much everything else covered (including the laughable I like Sean, but... disclaimer).

Sean Astin writes a book about his own experiences while filming LOTR.

Gee, since it is a book about HIS experiences, how dare he only talk about himself.

Haven't read the book, but I don't know that the original semtiment (as opposed to the way it was phrased) was terribly wanky. The OP thought she was buying a different book from the one she got -- a tell-all instead of a memoir. There is a slight difference, and I think that the way the book was marketed muddled the issue. I didn't really see all that much tinhattery in the original post.

PUH-LEASE. As if a million books haven't been marketed to tell the tale of something they actually don't tell at all.

(This to the "OMG THE BACK COVER SAID IT WAS GUNNA B A BOOK BOUT SEAN IN LOTR NOT SEAN BEFORE LOTR!!!! DISGRACE!!!11"-commentary found in the comments of that post.)

The Amazon reader reviews to that book were very different. Some were "omg this books rox" and some were "god, this book and sean astin SUK!".

Well, I personally skimmed through Andy's book and it was very cute, I especially liked some of the unseen photos, but LOTR merchandise-type of books really aren't worth the purchase. The DVD's pretty have all the extras one could hope for (the EE versions, that is).

Oh COME ON, shes just saying that the book wasn't what she expected. Which is not the "sekrit domlijah message", but an account on how it actually was to shoot a massive franchise.

Probably just a misunderstanding, that's all.

FYI, there's co-existing wank, with long exerpts from the book, on FameTracker, where Sean-haters have diagnosed him with pretty much every mental illness you can think of for the things he said in his book.

You have to go back a few pages to see where it starts, but that link is the ass end of the wanking.

The excerpts I've seen make him seem like even more of a passive-agressive tool than I originally thought.

Of course, things out of context, etc.

The whole thing makes me sick. Sean can't do anything right, he's just not one of the "cool kids". So what if he comes across as whiney or "passive agressive"(something I think is complete bullshit and a twisting of his meanings) or negative...tough cookies, kids! Grow up. It's his book. His right to bitch. Villifying him for it won't do any good. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But there is a difference between that and trying to figure out his mental disorder.

The filming of LOTR wasn't a bouncy happy playland for everyone. Berating Sean for not thinking that it was the "greatest experience in the history of the world" is just as wanky as anything Sean could have said. From what I've read he says NOTHING bad about his castmates, he may mention tensions but guess what? Those happen. ANd I'm glad..GLAD that someone is finally saying that there were issues. And I'm glad he admits he's to blame for much of it. From what I've seen he seems to place most of the blame on things on himself. Now, some people seem to think he is being "passive agressive" here, but I think it's more possible he's just being honest about his flaws. And good on him for that.

Sean is not perfect, he puts his foot in his mouth, can be whiny and a lot of other things. But some news for some of you(maybe not on this thread but in LJ land): Niether are Dom, Elijah, Billy ect.

As far as self absorbtion goes, I'm sure there is some of that. But I find it hard to call one self absorbed over an autobiography when the very definition of that is to speak of YOUR own experiences and YOUR own thoughts in YOUR point of view.

But the self absorbtion goes both ways. Because I see much self absorbtion in this fandom over the book. "WHAT?! THe book didn't live up to MY expectations? It wasn't about what *I* wanted???" Puhleeze.

And I feel no sympathy, not one ounce for the people that bought the book who A)Didn't like Sean to begin with B) Bought it strictly for "dirt"(as if) and pictures of other actors. C) Weren't bright enough to figure out that Sean, who was in quite a few films before his LOTR role, was not going to write a book that simply read: "Hi, I'm Sean Astin. I did nothing at all before LOTR. Here is all the dirt on the backstage goings on............(followd by) And there will be nothing AFTER LOTR as well. Goodnight."

Jeez, talk about pots calling the kettle black. What a load of negativity!

Doesn't it occur to any of these girls that the guy is just massively insecure? That seemed obvious to me very early on. He's a kind-hearted guy who seems to think he's not really good enough to be where he is, and that any minute it'll all get snatched away from him. That is an INCREDIBLY common attitude in Hollywood, and accounts for a great deal of what most people perceived as swelled egos. It's also a very common attitude among people who were raised by abusive parents. (Take it from me, I know.)

How come so many fans can come up with all kinds of excuses and rationalizations and poor-babyisms for other actors, but Sean gets so much crap dumped on him? He's a guy like any other guy, and his "awful problems" are actually pretty normal. And hey, actions speak louder than words. Yes, he talks gloomy, but how does he ACT? Has anybody ever seen this guy be mean, or heartless, or snotty, or abusive? Anybody? Has he ever refused to talk to a fan, or punched out a photographer, or gotten sloppy drunk and picked a fight, or beat up his wife, or done any of the other things that asshole movie stars get front pages for?

Seems to me using his autobiography to talk about himself and his career is a rather minor sin, when you put things in perspective.
