Ghost In The Shell SAC/Adult Swim Wank
I'm hoping this is really wank. It is a couple of days old, dead-horse anime wank from the boards at Adult Swim. It's a mini-wank that didn't really take off. Probably because people couldn't stand the smell of decay all around it.

IRC_Fansubber has a bit too much time on his hands and takes his anime very, very seriously. Ghost In the Shell SAC is far too serious to be shown on American television. Americans who watch Adult Swim could never relate to any of this.

Think of world events happening at that time. Think of how the intended audience, people living in Japan, was drawn into the various aspects of the show and which aspects were empathetically reflected back to those people. Think of this series' TV shows, manga, and movies as a whole. Then think of what [adult swim] is doing with it.

A show like this, steeped in political ego and intrigue, set in a world where cyber-terrorism is a frequent threat and interaction with foreign governments and organizations is treated with high suspicion and even higher security, only makes one wonder if the Japanese writers cleverly included some of their own social commentary of real current events into the story, from the perspective of Japan. There happen to be many debatable instances of this throughout the 26 episodes. Among other things, notice how the two American CIA agents are portrayed in episode 10, "Perfect Day for a Jungle Cruise", and how other interactions with America, Russia, China, Britain, and their diplomats are portrayed and dealt with in other episodes.

Dude. It's Ghost In The Shell. We know.

He goes on and on for many lines with random bolding and much linking.

Then - through it all, his reasoning becomes crystal clear - it isn't political intrigue, or a burning anger at the stupidity of the unwashed masses! It's just more of teh same dub vs. sub wank that just refuses to die in the anime fandom.

Oi

Damn, but I want to see that show.

I do too. I am seriously bummed that Innocence isn't playing in a single theater within quick driving distance of me. I'd love to see it on the big screen. I would have loved to have seen Bebop on the big screen.

Then again, there's a lot of stuff I want to see. I'm about to begin watching Noir.

Netflix carries loads of anime. IIRC, there's an online anime DVD club similiar to Netflix you can join that has pretty much everything from LaBlue Girl to Pokeman.

I adore Netflix. Nothing but praise for them--they made it cheap and easy to see all seventeen volumes of Card Captor Sakura. (!!!) GITS is just one of those things that I don't only want to see--I want to own it so I can coo over the pictures on the cover and go back and rewatch the first episode because it has some particularly cool ten-second sequence.

Ahhh, Noir. One piece of advice: don't even try to marathon it. It's absolutely gorgeous, if dark, and the music is fantastic, but I can't watch more than two episodes at a time. Something about the pacing.

Innocence. ::sighs:: I'm still hoping it'll do well enough that they'll expand, but I should just resign myself to waiting for the DVD release.

(If I ever want to see something Netflix doesn't already have, I'll have to look into the anime thing. What's the name?)

I just did a search and I can't find it now. *curses* I know that it wasn't a figment of my imagination, darn it!

I didn't bookmark it because I already have Netflix and *huggles* them. I'm relatively new to anime and I've been ripping my way through series like crazy thanks to them. I am finishing up Trigun right now.

Thanks for the advice on Noir. I am psyched about it. The reviews all compared the series to my fave dark sessions of Bebop (Ballad of Fallen Angels, etc.), so it got moved to the front of the pack.

I live near a university town and I was certain that we would see Innocence here, but the closest theater showing is three hours from here!

Yep.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex will now premiere Saturday, November 6, at 12:30 a.m. for the beginning of its Saturday run.

I was pretty psyched.

Also: Fullmetal Alchemist will now premiere on Saturday, January 8, at midnight where it will begin its Saturday run.

Oh, not Saturdays! I can never remember to watch Adult Swim on Saturdays for some reason. Why do they need to keep putting new shows there when the weekdays are taken up with stale old episodes of Family Guy, Futurama, Sealab, and Inuyasha (all shows I loved originally, and all shows that I now can't stand to watch since I've seen all the episodes, or all that they air in the case of Inuyasha, so many times. The made me hate Bebop with their overairings for god's sake. Bebop!)?

Wow, he could have just said 'the dub is going to suck' and saved a million hours of his time.

As much as I despise dubbed anime, I don't go around telling AS that they need to start subbing the anime they show. It's called GO OUT AND BUY/RENT THE DVD YOU IDIOT. And if you are teh poor like myself, you suck it up like the rest of us and watch anyway. Oh anime fandom, you make me sad sometimes (Ie. the majority of the time). T_T

Seriously. The way I see it (or at least, the way it worked for me) is that having the dub on AS gets people watching, and then if they like it enough, they'll go seek out the subs on their own. Dubbed anime is not the end of the world!

While I confess to not having slogged through the linked rantage, I read a nice critical review of SAC that suggested the dub was perfectly respectable, and would not be an impediment to following or enjoying the show.

::shrug:: I'm holding out for the sub not only because subs are my preference, but because I'm actually quite attached to this Japanese cast (it's the same cast for both the GITS movies, and the in-progress second season of SAC, which I've actually seen a little of). I have a Thing for Yamadera Kouichi. But if the only thing available was the dub, you bet your ass I'd watch it.

That's pretty much how I saw it too. He had to have spent like an entire day writing out that screed.

Why does he care so much how the rest of us watch it? What possible difference does it make to him? It's like a holy crusade him or something.

Sheesh.

Yeah - I saw some of GitS:SAC fansubbed and liked it, so I'll be watching the dub. I can't afford to buy the DVDs but I want to know what happens, sooo...

That and I'm not rabid fangirl attached to the series. So long as the Tachikoma sound cute and hyper, I really don't care.

Appreciates condensed version!

Yeah, that's it! I also got the 'intellectual poser' sort of thing out of it. Most of what he said didn't make a bit of sense, really. If you look at it hard enough, it's just parrot babble without any real substance.

I suppose that's why he posted it to AS. He thought there would be no one there who would challenge him because they would be overwhelmed by his dazzling intellect.

Um, that would be no.

Man, I wish American cable could do what Japanese cable does and offer a dual-language version. That's right people, if you have Japanese cable there's a little button you can press if you're watching an American show, and look! Now the dialouge is in English. Press it again, and it's in English and Japanese at once (hellishly confusing, but there you go), and press it a third time and it's dubbed into Japanese. It's a beautiful thing. I didn't have to listen to Star Trek dubbed in Japanese for more than five minutes (for the Hysterical Laughter bonus).

... but really. I'm a rabid foaming subbie, but if the dub doesn't mutilate the plot or characterization, it doesn't really matter. I think they're missing out a bit, but at least they're watching the same show I'm watching. ^^;

It was... unique.

It doesn't help that for foreign show dubbing, they only have three different types of voices for men, and two for women -- males get Deeply Masuline And Commanding, Effeminate, and Comic Relief, and women get either Slutty or High Pitched And Cute. (For a country that does such good anime dubs this seems weird, but there you go. I guess they get all the second-rate voice actors...) So yeah. Masculine Commanding Data was... er... different. Yeah. ¬_¬ Different.
