While poking for info on IMDB about the film "Serenity" an off shoot of the sadly cancelled TV show Firefly - I found I don't know what.

emineric: I've already seen this movie - it is called Alien Resurrection

fen: STFU crack smokers!!

short and sweet with weird moments of warm fuzzies or male bonding or something.

The bonus: Only gay people and my ex-girlfriends like Buffy

Ahahaha, I liked the...
Did you know that Joss teaches classes on "How to NOT write movies based on Alien Resurection" b/c of how much it sucked...thought that was pretty interesting, and very Joss like.
...bit. Though I should feel offended because I really liked the A:R movie. *hangs head*

I'm with you - I rewatched it recently and quite liked it. Of course I have a soft spot for Charles Dance.

A:R isn't bad, if you turn it off/leave the theater when Ripley falls through the floor. *nods* Yep, it works fine then.

Word!

Right up until then, it's a somewhat intriguing movie with some decent action. After that it turns into the Very Special Edition of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" with illustrations by H.R. Giger. Gah.

To me, it was less like symbolism and more like being beaten upside the head with a giant, mucus-covered copy of Freud's collected works.

In Freudian psycho-symbolism, that's "love".

scary movies and I don't mix well either, but I caved in recently and saw the first alien film.

I only felt a little scared once.
It was a very good movie.

I've never seen "Alien" because the aliens, weirdly, scare the crap out of me like nothing else ever has. I mean, it was all I could not to freak out in the section of "The Great Movie Ride" at Disney MGM Studios that takes you through a mock-up of the ship with a couple of those suckers. Needless to say, I skipped the then-brand-new "alien encounter" attraction.

I have no idea why I react like that to those things. The copycat ones in X-Files did the same thing. EW. *shudder*

[the Frontier Psychiatrist says]

Well Giger (fella who design'd 'm) had this whole kick about meshing organic with the inorganic aesthetically. So they're artificial yet alive, and a little bit mechanical, yet not, and they move not-quite-right, and etc. Something about that hits some psychomological spot o' fear down in ya.

[/FP]

Also, they're scary. I mean, they have TEETH on their TONGUES and they bleed acid. Yuuurgh.

Did anyone actually like AVP? I thought it was the one thing uniting the Predator fans and Alien fans and Resident Evil fans in a plan to lynch the director for fucking with their franchises ...

I did. But then, I saw it as a sort of remake of Titanic, one with a less annoying actress in the place of Kate Winslet, and a Predator instead of Dicaprio [Predator far more attractive.]

"Never let go, anonymous predator.. never let go!"
"Grrrrr...argh. [Translation: I love you, feisty anonymous human. Goodbye, goodbye, parting is such sweet sorrow!]"
*Predator Fathership descends, feisty anonymous human bids her love a tearful farewell and gets a cool killing-stick to take her mind off it*

Besides. There was a penguin. And aliens, which are, beyond being terrifying.. kinda cute, really.

IMDB wank happens so often, it's like 80% of probably never even ends up here, because it just happens so often. I read the boards to upcoming films sometimes and think, "Oh god, not this again!" and close the window.

:/

Kind of OT, but why was the show cancelled? Bad ratings or what? Whedon-fanatics seemed to like it and even many non-Buffy fanatics (such as myself) fell in love with it.

mal/kaylee otp omg.

Fox showed it all out of order and kept fooling with the air time so I think it just didn't catch on.

I saw it on DVD the first time - so I'm not really sure.

Yeah, that's pretty much what happened. Fox stuck it in a god awful timeslot, couldn't be arsed to show the two hour premiere first, and kept bumping it all over the map for sports.

Then they decided to cancel it because of poor ratings (um, big shock), and then they decided to air the two hour premiere, rather than air the last two eps of the season.

Their heds were clearly all pastede up their asses yey.

At least they showed it in the States. We've never had it aired here in Australia (even though one of our free-to-air stations has the rights), so I just went out and got the dvds when they were released.

What they said. Basically, they were shown the pilot, which did a fabulous job setting up the mass of characters, the varying characteristics of the world it was set in, was chockfull of action, and like dancing monkeys everywhere, the Fox execs threw shit at it and made Tim Minear and Joss Whedon whip them up a new one hour premiere over the weekend, which is why The Train Job, which was supposed to be the second episode, is such a festival of clunky exposition and jerky plot, and it was all down hill from there. Our Mrs. Reynolds, which they showed third, was really from farther back in the production line, for example. The order on the DVDs is the Joss-approved order, and it makes a whole hell of a lot more sense characterization-wise than the way the Fox execs decided to do it.

They didn't promote it, they put it in the Time Slot of Doom, preempted it for most of October for baseball, and when it really started amping up and hitting its creative stride, they cancelled it.

Though they claimed it was too weird and ungood to ever find an audience, every single person I have fed the pilot, genre fan or not, has really fallen hard for it. It had the potential to be really popular, to my mind, especially since Enterprise was really starting to suck at the same point Firefly got good.

At least it got 12 episodes shown. Wonderfalls made it,what, 3? Including the showing they changed the day and time on AFTER the TV Guide was printed.

I hate Fox.

Wow. That utterly blows. I think they showed the show in the order Whedon wanted it to be shown in here, as to me it all seemed to make a lot of sense.

Yay for not being a victim of the Fox Network and its evils.

Also yay for DVD's. :]

Exactly. I never much followed any of Whedon's other stuff, but I had a friend explain Firefly to me, I was vaguely interested, and we then proceeded to watch the entire season in two days. Wonderful stuff, really.
