FMA Almost-Wank
I don't know how wanky this is - it doesn't have anything in terms of insult throwing, but I thought the original rant itself was fairly wanky, and there's always the potential that someone will be horribly offended.

Someone posts in FM Alchemist that he doesn't understand people who write yaoi and shounen ai HagaRen fanworks.

Some people agree that the proliferation of m/m works in the fandom is off-putting. (And a discussion about the definition of shouta versus that of pedophilia ensues.)

Dissenting but polite voices point out that HagaRen does not lend itself to any pairings whatsoever, and so to say that shounen ai and yaoi are out of the question seems a bit off.

OP says, about his involvement with yaoi or lack therof,

Now that times are starting to change, I find people, mostly young females, latching onto the whole homosexual phenomenon like rebellious teens after a bottle of their father's booze. And I make this metaphor because, for example, in Europe drinking laws (and depending on where you are, NO drinking laws), are far more lax there than in the U.S. And yet still there are far-less alcohol-induced crimes there than in the U.S. I was raised by an Irish Roman Catholic household, the laws against me drinking where very lax within family circles, and yes although I've done my fair share stupid things under the influence, I've always taken responsibility afterwards, and I've never really seen alcohol as such a big deal as most kids around me did. By the same token, I myself am a transgendered bisexual male (FtoM). All of my decently-sized circle of friends I surround myself with are gay or lesbian, with the exception of one. All of us seem also to not grok the hype over same-sex pairings in anime fandoms, unless of course such pairing is already present, or hinted at such.

That's nice dear, but please tell me why on earth should other fans *CARE* about what you and your circle of politcally correct friends do?

Should I contact NASA about getting you a spaceship ride so you can get over yourself?

In the words of Chopstick:

It says here in the report that your love for Edward... Is comperable to how peanut butter belongs to jelly? You said that "It doesn't make sense that they go toghether... But people really like them toghether no matter how retarded it seems."

There is no reason for why the FMA fandom has crazy amount of yaoi. The fangirls just all decided that Roy/Ed was hot and started writing -- people like them toghether no matter how retarded it seems.

Exactly. For whatever reason many fans just seem to like yaoi pairings over het ones, it's not a crime that people aren't writing what you* [*general you] want to read.

Hell I wonder why the 'Troy' fandom is so overrun by awful Mary Sues and bad Achilles/Bri-whatever iics when the movie was so horribly and badly slashy.

this is not to say that i don't mind male/male relationships esp. canon ones, but i think random scary fan relationships really run an anime or manga series down, at least for me.

This quote caught my eye.

I am curious, really curious and not in the sarcastic way, how yaoi manages to run an anime or manga series into the ground.

I've heard this many times before and it baffles me. How does a genre of fanfic destroy an anime/manga fandom and the enjoyment thereof?

All of us seem also to not grok...etc, etc.

Is there any *reason* that being gay or bi should give a person special insight into the minds of a huge, diverse group of fanfic writers?

Strangely enough, I thought being gay had to do with sexual preferences and stuff. I didn't know it also conferred teh Mystical Mind Reading Powerzz.

Hey, I was latching onto the bottle of metaphorical booze way before this newest crop of youngsters. Like... like, six years before, at least! Hey, that's a long time in internet fandom!

I love how everyone thinks that this whole female-interest-in-teh-buttsecks is, like, just a new and trendy phenomenon. I mean, dude. Maybe it's always been there and now it's just more socially acceptable?

Nah, it's always the men telling us how female sexuality works. Oh, okay then!

Wow, the fm_alchemist community really lends itself to wank, doesn't it? Am so not surprised. I would have guessed, however, that most of the nasty hissyfights were going to come from the anime vs. manga fandom split, not the het vs. yaoi fandom factions. I s'pose some things are universal in every fandom.

I am also very much not surprised that that thread turned into a wank-fest. The guy who posted it was clearly looking to make a big fuss with himself at the center. Why else does somebody come onto a community that's so far had the lion lying down with the lamb, so to speak, and make his very first post a lecture on the suckage of yaoi/shounen ai? It was hardly even on topic; you could replace every mention of FMA with, say, Gundam Wing, and make just about as much sense. You just do that unless you're a troll or an idiot.

You mean FMA isn't all about Roy going around being fucked by every guy that ever passed his way? I'm particularly fond of Havoc x Roy, myself. And Hughes x Roy if we're into the kinky guilt-laden stuff. I'm shocked!!1!!12345

(No, wait, that's the content of the lovely fantasies I had while reading FMA, because it was mediocre at best. Personally I understand perfectly well why people have to maku up their own fun (pairings) with it.)
