George Lucas vs. the Stormtroopers
Look - another wanky article!

Highlights:

The opposition to Mr. Lucas' changes shows how far America has slipped off its foundation -- the idea that the individual has inalienable rights -- and is teetering on the brink of the sort of evil Galactic Empire that he imagined for the silver screen.

Not surprisingly, intellectual property thieves have found their champion in a Libertarian, who wrote: "As far as the morality of [stealing] Lucas' movie goes … [i]f destroying art means making more of it available in more pleasing versions, then I say let the destruction begin."

There is a word for this philosophy -- fascism.

The oppressive state depicted in Mr. Lucas' Star Wars -- the dreaded Empire -- has already had its day on earth. In fact, they had the last century, the bloodiest known to man, dominated by National Socialists and Communists. As witnessed in Germany and in Russia, tyranny typically begins with censorship. And censorship begins with the extermination of the individual's right to create, speak and write.
The evidence is unmistakable and it is everywhere, from government intervention in speech on talk radio, politics and the Super Bowl to efforts to eradicate sex, guns and cigarette smoking from music, television and movies. The assault on George Lucas' right to Star Wars is the latest example; it demonstrates that, when the state restricts speech, the mob will not only oblige -- it will offer suggestions.

Oh boy.
I don't know what to say.

Get over yourself!

He'd have a point if it was the government saying Lucas can't do what he likes with his own property.

As it is... wuh?. Power to the people or something on yay.

This kind of response to bashing turns me off even more than the bashers themselves.

Yes, the prequel bashers are annoying. Yes, they are tactless. Yes, they spit on ignore the whole concept of intellectual property.

But that's no excuse to act like an ass.

Prequel-haters and purists whine.

Those who embrace the new changes whine back.

There's a reason I avoid Star Wars online fandom, despite the fact that I've fangirled the movies for as long as I've been alive. That reason would be that they're all fucking insane.

Excellent.

I have no idea what he/she said.

Something about fascists smoking cigarettes on television while assaulting George Lucas?

Wow, that must be on the "extras" DVD.

Keee-rist, yes the people whining about the changes to release of the original do need to learn to STFU and deal, but compairing them to Hitler?

That just not cool.

[FWIW I think this sums up my feelings about SW wankers.]

Wait, wait, wait. So let me get this straight. Because people are complaining about Lucas' changes to Star Wars, this means he is being opressed... despite the fact it's clearly not making an iota of difference. Therefore, lack of opression would be if the fans were not allowed to complain. So, forcing people to not complain is freedom and democracy!

... please tell me I'm wrong.

Yeah, 'cause saying that George Lucas sucks big giant donkey balls for not giving some of his fans what they want is just like what Hitler did to Europe. No, really.

Christ on toasted wheat, I really need a STFU icon...

Thank you, government!

[i]f destroying art means making more of it available in more pleasing versions, then I say let the destruction begin."

I think that the Libertarian was saying "Good for Lucas", not "Good for the movie pirates" or whatever. I simply can't see how "destroying art" refers to either the fans/government forcing Lucas to not distribute altered movies, so "destroying art" probably refers to Lucas altering the movies in ways the fans don't like.

Hey! Thatsa summa spicy meataballa!

Pfft. The whole thing could easily go away if Lucas would just unclench and release the original versions on DVD as well as the new ones. That's what everyone is objecting to, I think - the fact that they can't view the versions they've loved all these years on the spiffy new technology. And in my opinion, Lucas is just being a wanky dick in not doing it. I think he just loves the wank. Attention-whore.
