Leaky Cauldron Rocks the Vote
In Harry Potter Fandom, The Leaky Cauldron posted Declare Yourself to Vote, a stirring call to the November polls. Predicably, along with the "Thanks Leaky Cauldron!" comments, some fans have their robes in a bunch and are protesting the post. Someone complains that "everyone knows these efforts will bring out more votes for Kerry," while others maintain that Harry Potter fans are made up from politics of all stripes, even the "book-burning Republicans."

Barb says: "Personally, I feel that if we get a huge voter turnout, I would be comfortable with whomever we elect as President ... because it would mean that a majority of the people had spoken. My greatest fear is that 30 or 40 percent of the voting public will decide the election in November."

Ken (yes, really, Barb and Ken) rebuts: "What is the point of encouraging people to vote? Just to raise a percentage? How does it help us to choose the best leader by encouraging people to cast a random uninformed vote? I'd much rather have 25% of informed voters casting votes, than 75%, where 50% are voting for whatever candidate they last heard "something" about recently." Ken then asks the admin: "When do you feel it's appropriate to use your readership to advance your personal pet issues?"

Melissa the admin gets a little pissed: "Never. THat's not what we're doing right now. It's ridiculous to call this a personal pet issue when it's quite possibly the most important issue in our country today - as it affects all other important issues in our country today. You said you didn't mean to be intentionally snide but I take calling this a 'personal pet issue' a tremendous insult."

You have your "I agree with Ken" party, the obligatory "can't we all just get along" faction, and "Vote for Dobby!" In addition, though the TLC did not endorse any candidate, they did mention Bush and Kerry by name, and the significance of naming BUSH first is being as hotly debated as who rose from the table of thirteen first in The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry or Ron?

This Declare Yourself to Vote post has garnered a respectable 465 comments as of this post. Read, and enjoy the blessed release.

While I do think it's important to vote....

Isn't it a little sad that people have to be told to do so by a Harry Potter web site? Are they living in a hole in the ground? That's what I always think when I see these notices going up around fandom.

No, no. It's the LOTR fans who live in a hole in the ground. The HP people live at Hogwarts, where the teacher/student sex ratio is through the roof if the fanfics are any indication.

Are they living in a hole in the ground? That's what I always think when I see these notices going up around fandom.

I've already said my thoughts elsewhere. I was disappointed when I saw TLC post their voter entry.

I'd still be annoyed by Oprah (a TLC reply used her as an example) or if I saw this from a Buffy forum staffed by Americans, hosted on American servers, paid by American dollars, etc.

If I was annoyed by US publishers thinking American children can't figure out the original text of the HP books, then I'm annoyed by a fandom website--the fact the fandom is a British based *source* made it even more ironic--feeling the need to 'remind' Americans to go out and vote.

It's not just this one instance; it's the redundancy of political propaganda in real life--I get mail for both Republican and Democratic (heh, even got one of those freebie 8x10 pics of the OTP of Kerry/Edwards in the mail) voting, along with GLBT groups asking for money--and how I've watched TLC for over a year and thought I could rely on it to give me a break from politics. There are some things, unless you're so isolated from life, that reminders are not necessary. For Americans, it's the US elections now.

Seeing 'go make your voice heard' reminds me of those old commercials about 'this is your brain on drugs'... It's idealism that I don't necessarily find practical because there's also the electoral vote to take into account. Politics are a never-ending cycle and to *over*hype only one aspect of it... {shakes head}

I voiced disappointment over their choice; the Leaky Cauldron editors voiced they basically don't care. We're in disagreement then, and since they voiced they're Americans and I'm an American, freedom of speech and all.

All of these Harry Poter fan sites tend to be a little strange but there is not one which is as self obsessed as The Leaky Cauldron - not even The Sugarquill. The site is peppered with references to their own moderators, their exciting and important personal contributions to the Harry Potter Fandom as a whole and the important people they have met choose what Melissa attests they do have less direct Harry Potter news than some of the other sites. This is I gather becasue they filter out what they don't believe to be true - I guess there is a load of crap out there but most people are intelligent enough to filter it for themselves. Of course it is their site and they may do what they wish but you have to ask yourself whether we really care what Leaky Cauldron mods think. Should I hit a Harry Potter gossip site then it is probably because I want to read about Harry Potter not crap about voting or elections in the USA. If I want politics then I'll go to a politics site for God's sake. What I also can't understand is that, choose what adults have to say, Harry Potter is primarily for children who are too young to vote anyway - I wonder what they think of it all.

Mac

PS Ditto all the book burning malarkey. It could only be the good ol' US of A.

It's even more anoying if the country doing the politics isn't your country.

We already had our election in Canada, and yet I still have to deal with a daily running commentary of the Bush/Kerry race for the next two months.

also: Voting Green Party in Canada doesn't have people screaming at you about how you "OMG LOST TEH ELECTION TO BUSH!!1!"

Quite. Why the hell should one want to visit a fansite to witness a heap of pseudo-intelligent claptrap from a bunch of morons whom I wouldn't even trust to carry my shopping in from the car. My God if I wanted that I could simply watch Paxman interviewing a load of salaried politicians on question time.

I always find these things mildly frustrating, simply because I'm not from America. They discuss it like it's a Great Big Thing That Affects Everyone (the actual vote, not the aftermath which, well, does), and I'm sitting there going 'look, excuse me, can I get my daily dose of fandom? I CAN'T VOTE.' I wish they'd at least preface these things with 'American Citizens' or something...

(Disclaimer: I actually support as many people voting as possible, and any means used to get them to the polls, website announcements included. I just wish there would be some sort of acknowledgement that there are a lot of people out there they're not addressing with these announcements. This post may sound like I mean otherwise, but that's because it's 2:30AM and I should really be in bed.)

Yes - I do sometimes wish some Americans would realise that, no, not everyone in the entire world cares about America.

Also, why would a Harry Potter website be pimping American politics?
1. Harry Potter is British,
2. Fandom, Politics. OMGNOONECARESABOUTTHERELOVE

From TLC: As the American readers of this site no doubt know, on November 2 the country will go to the polls to decide who is elected president of the United States for the next four years. We are taking a rare aberrance from our HP-related focus to encourage our eligible readers to register to vote and then make the trip to the booth when the time comes.

Do you mean to say that you couldn't figure out what it was about from the first two sentences?

Sheesh... and they say Americans are dumb.

I wonder if they'll be pimping the UK election in May... You know, seeing as how Harry Potter is British and all.
Unfortunately, seeing as how most of the country hates Tony Blair and wishes him dead (in a strictly political sense, of course), there won't be much conflict, but still.

Political HP wank makes the Ron in my icon very pissed off.
Be nice. Don't make Ron pissed off.

Seriously, the next thing they'll do is go through OotP to pick up coded messages that endorse Bush or Kerry.
It'll be like the Bible Code or something.

On page 385 of the UK version of OotP, if you pick every 87th letter, the letters will read:
"Bush win all fags die"

OMG!!!! PREDICTIONS!!!!

I'm starting to understand why Rowling wrote the books for the kids. The only things the kid talk about is "I like Ron, but I like Harry better" & "Draco is mean".

Akshully, I posted this wank because I thought that it was funny, in a wry, humanity-MUST-reflexively-wank-full-facials-onto-politics way. Nearly everybody who commented to the TLC post had a heart-felt and hard-held opinion on whether TLC could post what the mods pleased (Do you pay for this site? NO! Then STFU!" or "Harry Potter praisehisholyname is BRITISH, you morons. What does Harry Potter ashewasinthebeginningisnowandevershallbeAMEN have to do with your running-dog capitalist war-mongering country?!//?") on whether TLC should have posted what it did ("Yay! I'm gonna vote now fer sure!" or "OMG you hoors, you have NO BUSINESS including anything remotely political in my fandom!!hundredeleventy!!), and on whether anybody cared a fig for US elections (I AM SO OFFENDED that you Americans think that anybody gives a crap about what goes on in your country! You are nothing to me!" or "What we decide here in our country GODBLESSAMERICA affects the whole world and you should care very much!! Please love freedom!!)

I thought we could make fun of them. Not BE them.

I've never done this before and I am sorry if it annoys anyone. Not that I'll prostrate myself and offer up my firstborn, and trust me you'd not want my bubblechild first born even if I had one, to placate anyone but I will say sorry.

Anyhow, on to the wank.

Over on Something Positive Randy has been running a sl about two of his characters breaking up due to the pressure of work. It's mildly touching, a few nice moments interspersed with the funny, but it has spawned a thwapping fountain of spooge on the LJ community.

Apparently the sl is based on something in the creators own life and one of the people the character is based on was upset about the reaction people had to the comic. This, or course, coaxed all the suck-ups and trolls out of the woodwork. Mostly in the following links.

I think it's mostly the 'it's his LIFE, people! he bleeds his pain out with the ink!!!!!' responses to the latest post that prompted me to do this.
