Damned Dirty Zombies
This one's an easy one (and a little one) - Shaun of the Dead wank via IMDB.

It starts with the seemingly innocuous question:

"Any Americans seen this yet? How well will it be received?"

OP asks this, because apparently his American girlfriend doesn't get the humor.

It stays polite for a surprisingly amount of posts. Then, just under a quarter of the way down, much like blood in a zombie movie, the splooge begins to splatter.

"Its seems that Americans don't laugh at comedies unless it has fart jokes, black people being sassy, or stoners running around trying to get laid and find their car."

"Anyone who doesnt think its hilarious should get shot."

"Now I know what it's like for Europeans to have to wait for weeks to get movies that Americans get right away. It stinks. "

Followed by comments about how American movies rely on fart jokes until someone mentions:

"there are a few fart jokes in this film... "

Oops. :p

Of course, this leads to incomprehensible wank about American remakes of foreign films/tv shows:

"man, you're good at just lumping all americans into a pile aren't you? a sshole.. anyway, AMERICANS didn't want to recreate those comedies.... AMERICAN TELEVISION DID... american television in NO WAY represents america."

Of course, nothing is sacred. Canada get dragged into the mix:

"Canada = America Jr. "

And my personal favorite so far:

"I'm an English teacher living in Indonesia, and we recently watched the DVD with a whole cross-section of nationalities (Brits, Yanks, Canucks, Ozzies) and almost everyone loved it. I think it depends more on the nature of the viewer - Brits seem to like dark, thoughtful humour, and so do other people - just maybe not the majority audience in the states (younger viewers/ simpletons).

What happened to Coupling? Did they change the cast aswell?"

Reply:

"*beep*. you're in indonesia.. therefore, you know nothing about the united states. for one, calling us "yanks" is insulting as hell... for two, making broad generalizations about america is f ucking stupid. maybe you should come here and spend some time with people here and see. you've got some weird opinion of use due to our s hitty media and our s hitty government.. the people here aren't as bad as you'd like to believe."

Which then turns into politiwank, American-vs-British culture, materialism in film making, American-vs-British humor, etc. Note the amount of people who start their threads with, "I am an American and I..."

IMDB. It's like shooting fish in a barrel of splooge, in a way.

P.S. Come for the wank, stay for the trivia.

How the hell do those people think that saying that movies are dumbed down for Americans to get them is not insulting to Americans? Not that I'm saying it isn't true, but if one is going to insult a group of people, one should have a backbone and own up to it.

(And I'm still waiting for someone to suggest that perhaps the OP's girlfriend is just a dumb slut.)

I was wondering that too! And the OP thinking that one girlfriend = All of America. Is she like, Taste of America or something?

Personally, I do think it kind of stupid to remake foreign films into American versions, especially if it's already in English. However, sometimes the remake can be pretty good (Three Men and a Baby, anyone?).

...that Americans are so closed-minded that unless we Americanise our films, people won't go to see them in America and thus foreign film makers need to Americanise their films in order to see profits?

*snickers* Someone should enlighten this guy about the several hundreds of anime fans who refuse to watch Japanese films/series unless they're subbed and uncut. Americanized indeed.

Erm. No, we're not. The last bit of Canada that was still part of Britain ceased to be in 1949 when it joined Confederation. The rest have been part of this little country called Canada for much longer than that.

I perked right up when I read the bits about the American version of Red Dwarf.

Unfortunately, I have an .avi of this on my computer. It's got Craig Bierko as Lister...and for some reason, Kryten is wandering around Red Dwarf. Before the catastrophic radiation leak. It was all very bizarre. I know it was just a pilot, but Christ on a cracker. Must be seen to be believed.

American...British...bah. Just give me some Golden Girls and some Doctor Who and I'll be good to go. -.-

SotD is a fantastic and multi-faceted movie. However, I get giggly at the idea of "intellectual" wank caused by a zombie movie.

I thought Canada was more like America's disturbingly quiet uncle. You know - shows up once a year at Easter or Christmas* and spends most of his time in the kitchen? Tries not to spill his yams in his lap, and laughs forcedly at your jokes?

Sure, your Welsh and your Londoners are vastly different in terms of upbringing and outlook, judged on their own merits, but then again, so are urban Chicagoans and rural Cajun Louisianans in the States, and we manage to self-identify all as "Yanks." More precisely, others identify us as one group, regardless of whether we want to be or not. The regional differences just don't seem as important as the general nationality.

But but but. I just don't know where to start with this. Wales is a country, not a region. It's a country, not a region. A country. A. Country.

I'm just going to go home now, to Scotland, England. Its capital is Dusseldorf and our president is Chirac.

I guess(like several others have said) that I must have just grown up in an area where such distictions, Brittish comedy vs. American weren't made or weren't prevalent. I'm 23 and have been watching Brittish comedy for years and understanding it!

Imagine that! You know, because it takes a genius to understand something that's not even in another language. Oh, wait. Also, you'd think if they'd been watching it for years they'd at least know how to spell British correctly.

I'm sincerely sorry for the entire world on behalf of my country. *headdesk*

Why yes, I'll take that towel now. I'll be needing it.

Uh... since we're in nationality wank, I like to point out how I dislike the fact people say 'America' is dumb when referring to United States. America is a continent, not a sole country.

[/wank]

*coughs*

The humor when well written is universal. There's national stuff that is very difficult to get at times (happens to me in several Japanese jokes) but normally (when sharing a similar mindset) you understand it.
