An anon requested S*P wank
In the Something Positive webcomic there was a recent storyline where main character Davan broke up with his girlfriend Branwen when she got a dream job in Canada.

Now this didn't sit well with a lot of fans but the shit didn't hit the fan till Mercyspeaks, a mod of the comm and I think a real life friend of Randy's posts this rant where she tell us that bitching about comic characters is the same as bitching about real people.

And it just goes on and on and on.

Yeah, I had no idea. Not that I was complaining about the storyline, but I just don't really think about the SP characters being based on real people.

On the one hand you have the OP bitching out readers of a comic when she SHOULD be bitching out the CREATOR of the comic for turning her life into a goddamn cartoon soap opera. If she didn't want strangers offering their opinions on things she does, mayhaps she shouldn't be broadcasting what she does on a very popular web comic.

On the other hand you have readers going OMG WHY WOULD ANYONE LEAVE THE SAFETY AND SANCTICTY OF THEIR CHILDHOOD HOMES? LEAVING THE COUNTRY FOR A GOOD JOB IS SCARY AND I DISAPPROVE.

Didn't you that webcomic fans are imbued with psychic powers and therefore just intrinsically *know* which storylines and characters are reflecting the artists RL?

Really? Damn. I don't have that gene.

Randy's post in response to the response to Mercy's (leaving aside the idiot who got an LJ just to harass them) was pretty lame.

Dude, did you not miss the " had no idea Branwen was based on Mercy" theme there? Judas Priest.

You know, I was kind of curious as to how Randy's RL friends took that whole "just 'slightly' based on my RL friends" thing. I guess I know now.

Heh. Well, the original strip got more OH NO WHY WOULD ANYONE LEAVE HER TWUE WUV FOR A JOB! HEARTLESS MATERIALIST BITCH! It's, um, nice to see how gender roles and thoughts about romance have evolved in the twentieth century. No, really.

But the whole thing where we should never make fun of anyone in the comic because they might be based on real people is annoying. Anyone like Kyle needs to jump under a semi; likewise anyone acting like Eva did while she was with Davan. And if you're these people, I will tell you so.

I kinda feel like if you've allowed yourself to be made into a web-comic character, you're not allowed to complain. Well, you're allowed, of course- free speech and all that- but it's dumb. I figure once something is in the ether of fiction, then it's up for interpretation, and *gasp* people have different opinions.

Now, I could understand if she was saying "I was in this situation, and it hurts because you're condemning this character for doing what I did." but not "You're DIRECTLY INSULTING ME, you h0rs!"

But then I also think author intent is unimportant, so *shrug.*

I personally believe that anyone who chooses a job over true love is an idiot, but that's just me.

I had no idea that Branwen was based on a real person, nor did I know the situation was based on something that really happened.

My viewpoint stands.

I think one of the posters captured my opinion of this wank perfectly.

"Randy is a trained monkey churning out comics for your amusement."

Well, ok, they said he wasn't a trained monkey but in his relation to my life...trained monkey. I don't want to know that he based a sl or character on his own life or feel obliged to sympathize or care about anything but whether or not it's a good strip and funny.

(Which, despite all the hype, I don't think the whole Branwen going off to Canada is. It was rather dull and worthy and I thought it was stretched out for too long. But then I've never cared much about Branwen.)

During that whole story arch, I felt like I was being called a bitch 500 times everyday.

When someone told me that I and my fanfic were getting trashed on a fandom hate thread I dealt with it by, you know, *not* going there and reading the posts. Simple.

This is just a variation of the old 'don't write rapefic/incest fic/cutting stories/chan because there are SENSITIVE people out there who might be HURT' line. Only here with the delicious spicing of irony that it's coming from someone who gave permission for her life to be used in a web comic.

"Draw cartoons about my life! But don't anyone else dare talk about it!"

I never thought Branwen was a bitch for leaving because she gave Davan the option of begging her to stay. I'm more in the Aubrey camp of thinking Davan's ridiculous for not going after her because he's comfortable in a job he hates and a city he doesn't like very much either.

That being said, the "No criticisms because you may be insulting a real person!" nonsense is just that... nonsense.

Dammit, and I really like S*P. Now I'm losing respect for it.

Poor widdle Mercyspeaks has her feelings hurt, because she feels like people are calling her a bitch - while admitting that they aren't actually calling her a bitch - and I'm supposed to care, why?

Randy shows up to wag his finger and let us know we should be nice to Mercyspeaks - and I'm supposed to care, why?

Dude. I can't sum it up any better than this guy did:

1. In regards to a web-comic that has mercilessly taunted everything from religion (Nailed), rape (Kim/Davan), anarchy (the one where Davan beats up the guy yelling “quit hitting yourself”), and suicide (Scotty), we can’t say mean things about the characters for fear that we will offend someone.

And let's not forget furrydom, or the whole Wicca arc. Or the fact that Davan sent his pregnant ex a wire coathanger for her baby shower.

So much for killing the sacred cows. Everything Is Fair Game, Except My Real-Life Friends Who Have Incredibly Thin Skins, Who You'd Better Not Be Mean To.

You mean the ones Who Agreed To Be A Character In A Well Know Web-Comic?

I was chatting with a friend about this a few days ago and he made a good point, it really does seem like Randy can dish it out via his comic avatar, but can't take it when people are calling his ex on her bull.

And now Randy has decided not to stop using the LJ because it's too stressful. Which, of course, is up to him but why does he have to read the posts when he updates if he wants to avoid them?

Plus, I have to say that he can't really complain about people wondering if his latest strip is based on his own life after the whole Mercyspeaks kerfuffle. I mean they might have said that they didn't like the sister character and have her appear out of nowhere to rebuke them.

To me the recent thing is just more proof that he likes picking on people who for the most part can't fight back.

I mean someone dares to point out that a comic really isn't funny, [to them] or moving along any dangling plotlines, and he throws a fit like Anne Rice.

Congrats Randy you're a first class wanker.

As somebody who did review his comic and gave it a positive - yet critical review (I said his dialogue needed tightening and the dramatic scenes were often inserted into the comic awkwardly), I have to say that's pretty accurate. He acted civil to me to my face and to an interviewer that bashed my review, then bitched about the entire magazine I work for (despite the fact that another staff reviewer gave him the highest possible score) on his LJ.
