How critiquing a fanfic is like flying a plane into the WTC
This one is sort of hard to trace back to the roots, but however it started it's certainly wanky. It seems to have started when Urd-chan heard that one of her fanfics was being discussed on a forum and getting less than favorable reviews. Criticisms were exchanged, someone got banned from the InyashaEcchiFanfics Yahoo Group People begin arguing over what makes a flame and what is just constructive criticism while several members post in spite of fears of being banned for not agreeing with everyone else. Next thing you know Urds fanfic gets another less than favorable review by No-tUrd and

There are too many in this world who think they have the only truth. They are the ones, like Bachan said a while back, who fly airplanes into buildings. Just because they THINK they are right and the rest of the world is wrong, doesn't make it so. You can justify your actions in so many ways, just like I'm sure Bin laden has justified his. He's convinced that his is the only right way, and doesn't care who he hurts to get his way. I see a bit of a parallel here, although the victims aren't people working in a skyscraper in New York, but members of the fandom. When one member attacks another viciously, it hurts us all. The fandom's credibility falls. What I don't understand is how someone can be a fan of a series like Inuyasha - where goodness prevails, and the vindictive, vengeful villain is hated by everyone - can act the way some do. It goes against everything Takahashi stands for in her work. I wonder what SHE would think of the current situation. How can you love a series where the main characters are good, decent people, and not act like one yourself?

Which, believe it or not, offends some people.

One entire exchange gets posted in a livejournal including Urd's email in which I'm pretty sure she not only demonstrates an amazing ability to TOTALLY miss the point, but she also manages to say the exact opposite about who flamed who when and where when compared to

Subject: Re: FW: [FanFiction.Net] Review Alert!

I'm not trying to fight. My original message was just telling Urd,
since she publically blamed Numisma for the review when she didn't
write it and was thus spouting slander, that it wasn't her. [trimmed]

-Kristin

More than a few members leave the group with a scathing message to mark their passage:
Subject: STFU MOFO

And now the owner of the InuYashaEcchiFanfic yahoo group is repeatedly threatening to delete the group, only to back off and scold the members instead:
Subject: Re: [InuyashaEcchiFanFics] STFU MOFO
Warning: Shit Ahead. Wear esential protective gear.

I have one thing to say to you Saya. PISS off.

I am FUCKING sick of all the goddam crybabies on this list. EVERY time something happens on the list they come crying to me instead of trying to take care of the issue themselves.

ETA. Yet more of the wank, this time some of the backstory of the person banned and falsely accused of flaming. These entries are copied out of the new Urd hate group on LJ with permission.

Numisma replies to Urds message on IYED-Art in which Urd states that she has no reason NOT to believe Numisma was the one to post the flame, therefore Numisma is guilty.

and a second email reply to Urd's public posts on that group, neither of which ever got a reply

Ahhh Urd-chan, the reigning queen of Inu-wank. I think she's been a wankin' in that fandom for about three years now. That must be a record. Although this completely takes the cake. It's way better than her previous stolen fanart wank.

Awesome.

weeeeeeeeeeellllllllll

just let me make it known that i am the one who got banned from the Ecchi list and am also the one who is being falsely accused of having written that signed flame on ff.net and is thus being slandered.

Urd-chan is a coward and a simpering one at that. she treats the Ecchi list like it's her own personal mailing list and like it's the Urd-chan fan club. *rolls eyes* oh, and let's not forget the fact that she stalks Scott McNeil, Kouga's English voice actor.

I thought people liked Nataku in Inuyasha fandom. I also thought there was a bastion of fans who bash Kagome, surely the most good and decent person in Inuyasha, senseless.

My mistake!

Last I heard if you are in the US you have a right to your oppinion. For that matter a good chunk of the world outside of the US lets you have a free opinion as well. Sure you can not like a review that you have gotten but that doesn't give you the right to go out of your way to hurt other people. The declaration of Independence clearly states that people have a right to the persuit of happiness and the bill of rights says that we have free speach and URD I KNOW YOU LIVE IN THE USA!!! So don't you dare claim your not in the US!!!

I live in the Mediterranean. My country is
in the European Union of States. A few miles of sea away, just
slightly south of us, there is Iraq.

OK, I'm guessing Cyprus, but even then there's still Lebanon and Syria between them and Iraq. The only way they could be "a few short sea miles away" is to be in the Red Sea. But then they can't be in the EU...

In the past months, our quiet
little country has turned into something where in certain areas one
can't go out after 11 o'clock without being brutally raped and left
in a gutter.

O_o I had no idea this sort of thing was happening in EU countries. *makes mental note never to go to Cyprus*

When one member attacks another viciously, it hurts us all. The fandom's credibility falls.

I just came across this linked from a friend's journal, but I'd like to point out something...

Fanfic in general is a pretty incredible thing. Taking someone else's characters and universe and writing your own fantasies involving them isn't often going to do anything for you but garner praise from other fans, and where there's praise there's also mockery and criticism. It's just the way of things. You might be able to write well, but very few people will care if you aren't writing your own stuff.

Now while you're right in that people should try to be considerate of others, comparing someone who doesn't have anything nice to say about someone else's fanfic to someone who crashed a fully fueled airplane into a building full of people, killing thousands is just plain stupid. Even in principle they are completely different. Minor emotional offense to one person over fiction written using someone else's characters versus the deaths of thousands of innocent victims... please tell me you understand how someone who actually lost family or friends in the 9/11 WTC attacks would be justified in thinking you are intellectually retarded for even contemplating those incidents are similar.

Urd not only offended me and many others with her insinuations and allagories that were completely out of place. She also sent a mail back that was utterly condescending, and what's more, just made a copy of it and sent it back to all of us.

I suppose we meany lesser beings who are staring at the hand grenades in our hands should have expected not to diserve and individual answer.

if you go to http://www.livejournal.com/users/_midoriko_sama_/ You will see that the mail she sent me was the same she sent to Ookami-chan, and that she actually sent the same mail to Niamh this morning.
