Thunder, Thunder, THUNDERBRATS! HOOOOO!
Background info:

The Thundercats fandom has a long history of fights, flamewars, and generally uncivilised behaviour. It's a seriously titchy fandom, and a scarily volatile one. In years past, flames and mockery have been mainly reserved for people who were blatant trolls, wankers, or assholes, but lately the fandom's elite inner circle has turned on itself. Two days ago, the building tension climaxed, released, and exploded into a fury of scraping claws and flying fur - and the final battle was not in the form of a popularity contest or furry shipper discussion, but rather an abortion debate.

Demonprist is the fandom's token whiny socialist. She's 30, she lives with mummy, and her favorite pastime is rambling ad nauseum about how simply terrible it is to be poor, clinically depressed, and living in a patriarchal capitalist country. All together now. Ewww.

At some point, she got into a disagreement with Cheezey, the undisputed queen of the Thundercats fandom. The spat seems to have originated in email, but for reasons unknown, Cheezey responds by posting the following rant as a public post on her livejournal, in which she shreds Demonprist's email line for line and manages to turn a discussion about voting into a personal soapbox rant about why all women who have abortions are evil, irresponsible murderers. She expands on this in the comments section. Some evil would-be abortionists have their babies adopted, in which case they are volatile nutsos who will waste all the adoptive parents' emotional and financial investments by ruthlessly demanding the babies back, just when the taxpaying parties in the equation have got the little bastards all nicely kitted out in Baby Gap. Or they keep them, in which case they're Evil Welfare Queens popping out tax guzzling future drug dealers at the expense of ordinary, decent, hardworking Americans. But it's okay, people. Cheezey has the answers. Keep your legs shut, you bunch of skanky, loser hos.

Not long after the original post, Purrsia joins the fray. Purrsia is well known in the Thundercats fandom for being self righteous, bitchy, and a rightwing screwball, not to mention one of the biggest flamewar provocateurs on the internet, so it comes as no surprise when she sees Cheezey's post and eagerly seizes the opportunity to post a seven page tirade attacking Demonprist, liberals, Kerry supporters, and the entire pro-choice movement. And the fact that she has her tongue firmly embedded in Cheezey's ass is a bonus, one imagines.

At this point, a few other fandom regulars jump in, one to lend yet more support to the pro-life voices, and another to simply poke fun at Demonprist while managing to avoid the abortion argument entirely.

The flamewar rages on for 45 posts, including a Demonprist Pity Party Translation Guide, more painfully simple minded snark from Purrsia, and a random tangent about ADD.

Finally Demonprist comes along to hold her original ground. She rants on for four pages, then concludes her argument by chastising Cheezey for posting publicly in the first place.

Cheezey's husband and Purrsia step in to take a few cheap shots at Demonprist before Cheezey returns and responds to Demonprist's four page rant with a seven page rant of her own.

Purrsia quickly drops back into her customary sycophantic cheerleader mode, whilst Demonprist retreats to her own LJ, to make a public post whining about other people making public posts whining about her.

This is the kind of wank that makes your own fandom look blissfully sane.

Can't they all get back to writing furry pr0n? isn't that what furries do less scarily best?

It's so funny what you choose to be boggled by, isn't it? Somehow, in the midst of all the name-calling, stereotype embracing, and utter stupidity, what stuck out in my mind was this: I have the right not to vote, which I'm exercising.... Besides, I work 40 hours a week and have other responsibilities.

Because as well all know, busy people just don't have time to research issues and vote-- it was so much easier a hundred years ago when people worked eighty hours a week in factories and farmed. XP

Though honestly? It's perfectly all right with me if she doesn't want to vote. Oh, yeah.

Oh. My. God.

I've always been someone who's pimped the idea that people should get out and vote -- "decisions are made by those who show up," the responsibilities of citizenship, great-grandmother didn't have the right to vote until she was a married woman with children, yadayadayada -- but reading the splooge on that page, maybe I should be happy her busy schedule keeps her from being bothered with such a measly little thing like voting, because it's not like it's actually important.

Reporting fandom kerfuffles is one thing - this sort of cheap ad hominem attack on someone's character is quite another. You managed to make her sound like some kind of spoilt, self-pitying brat when she's anything but.

Oh well, now I know why she was so pissed off the other day, and I don't blame her.

Jesus. Fucking. Christ.

Y'know, it's surprising how jaded I've become since getting involved in internet fandoms. When I was still a toddling newbie and poking around in the Fiction Alley forums, I took a good long look at the R/H vs. H/H toe-to-toe slugfest ship debate and thought, "My god, this fandom is insane."

Then I found the Lord of the Rings fandom, and learned about how not having memorised the series and the Silmarillion and then become fluent in both Sindarin and Quenya automatically disqualifies you from writing any LotR fanfic at all, on pain of an enraged sporking. In Quenya. And I thought, "Well, would you look at that? There is a fandom that's even crazier than mine!"

And then I found Fandom Wank. The rest, as they say, is history.

(Although that does beg the question. Is there any fandom out there that isn't completely batshit?)

Heh, I met some of those people online through Seth Triggs, a fellow Thundercats fan. Good times then. I don't speak to any of them now, except for Seth on occasion and Erich the Mad Bassist. It's good to see them again.

FTR, I usually agree with Demonpriest, but I see the points that Cheezey is making. I just don't agree with the solutions, so to speak.

That being said, I've known Marxists/Democratic Socialists who've worked more than all of us combined and they pay taxes, live on their own and know how the system works. So, the way a person lives has little to do with their beliefs and most Socialists I know just laugh at people who try to attack their personal lives.

If she doesn't want to vote, good for her--my ex didn't, for various reasons. Basically being apolitical. But in the comments there's stuff about her 'using her voice' to not vote and such...um, right. Because it's so easy to tell when someone isn't voting because they're too hung over to get out of bed, and not voting because they don't like either candidate. If that's the case, and you want to have your voice heard, spoil your vote, or vote for a smaller candidate. I'm not one to get high-and-mighty if people don't vote, but when they act like it's a political statement to do so I start to wonder.

And the fact that she has her tongue firmly embedded in Cheezey's ass is a bonus, one imagines.

I read "Cheezy" as "Cheney" at first and thought to myself, "Hmm, I had no idea Cheney was into rimming!"

*gives out bleach to all those who need it do to that sentence*
