Long time lurker, first time poster!

Yendi makes amusing "make your own Anita Blake book" post mocking the series.

Fezabel finds the post (presumably through a mutual friend) and has kittens. "You are the worst kind of pretentious snob!" OMG how dare you not like the books?!!!??!! Anyone who agrees with Yendi is a sycophant!

Shortly thereafter, friend/sockpuppet Cariadwyn shows up to explain that Blake-haters are all just bitter because they can't write as good as LKH. And if you think her/his grammer sucks you are all LOSERS!

You're only allowed to have an opinion on the Anita Blake books if you like them, apparently.

I rit gud, don't you?

I *loved* this, btw...

'I just flat-out skipped any pages that had the words "velvet mist," "flatness of his stomach," or "curve of his hip" on them.'

so that leaves...um...a pamphlet.

Mwah! :)

You know, Hamilton strongly discourages fanfic based on the Anita Blake books. I'm firmly convinced it's because the fanfics are all better.

Apparently the desire to ban all fanfiction is the litmus test of author wankiness.

Yeah, me neither. I've got a friend who rants about how shitty they've become, so I figured I might as well keep staying the fuck away from them.

The series starts out good, but Anita just keeps accumilating powers, and teh Smut is slowly taking control.

I couldn't even finish the first one. It was horrible.

Worse, it had been highly recommended to me by three people whose book-related opinions I used to respect.

The Anita Blake books are gigantic Mary-Sue vessels. They're shoddily written, badly edited, and follow the same damn formula every time.

...That said, I can't fucking wait for Incubus Dreams to come out in paperback so I can afford to buy it. I nearly bought the one before it tonight. I own all the other books!!!!

I'm more interested in the Merry Gentry ones, because at least with those there was no five-book plot lead up to the smut. It's just ... smut. Prettyboi smut, at that. Yum.

Also, the greatest authorial Mary Sue of all time is, imho, Patricia Kennealy's Athyn Cahanagh, the main character of Blackmantle. Not only does she get the whole "lost heir" and rags-to-riches bit, she's fucking perfect at everything, and literally brings her lover back from the dead.
Plus, the whole romantic subplot? SO a fantastically embellished telling of Pat Kennealy's relationship with Jim Morrison. Yeah, THAT Jim Morrison. From the Doors. The dead one. Yeah. She basically wrote Blackmantle to give the story of her life a happy ending, and not so incidentally make herself perfect.

While I do think that Yendi ~is~ a giant book snob (among other snobish behaviour), it's not like LKH has been proving his distaste for the series to be unfounded considering how badly written each new sleaze fest is. At least the sane parts of the fandom realise how craptastic it's gotten of late.

You know, I love the first, oh, 3 books in that series.

But then, Jesus women, just because you're selling things doesn't mean you can stop including plots and editing. Taking a chapter out of Anne Rice's book is a very bad career move.

Now, if there was a series just about Edward and included no sex what-so-ever, I would be a happy camper.

The first five and Obsidian Butterfly were pretty good, IMO. The rest are godawful. They've no literary merit whatsoever, the smut is not especially well written and the characters are all laughable ...

... yet still I read and enjoy. Clearly, I have a problem.

With some people you just have to wonder: Was that sense of humour surgically removed, or did some motherfucker jump them with knife in hand and just carve that bastard right out? Fezabel is one of these people.

I suppose it doesn't help that my initial instict to Yendi's suggestion that all these books were supernatural PWPs was to check if my local library had any?

quick, to the pr0nmobile!

I loved the "make your own AB book." That was funny. I've read the first book, and I thought it was pretty good. 'Course, after what I've been hearing about the series, namely the later books, I doubt I'll buy any more of them.

It's both fun and sad to see people who attack others for having opinions. Fun because they're amusing; hey, sometimes morons are fun to watch. It's sad because we non-morons have to share a gene pool with these people. :\
