Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Fan-Tabulous

OT, but a useful OT
While those belonging to F_W are used to take screenshots of the wank, we all know that you can't always save it for various reasons (at work or school, or having no graphics program to grab a screencap).

So an entry full of juicy wank ends up looking like this.

But now? It doesn't have to.

Freezepage.com. Now with a time stamp.

Cool. This sounds like it was invented for us. Or by us even. XD

It's from a website made by an English teacher in Japan. He takes the strips, whites out the speech bubbles and has his students write new dialouge. It's as fucking funny as you'd imagine.

Unfortunately, I forget the URL.

Very nice. Does it save the comment threads too?

I haven't tested out that part yet, but I suspect it probably saves everything visiable, which means that if the comment threads have collapsed, you'll be SOL.

Note 1: If it takes more than 90 seconds to download a page, it craps out, gives up and gives you an error message.

(Previous deleted 'cause I refuse to reuse D'arcys that soon.)

hmm... perhaps if we disable images before downloading we'll just get the text file with no fuss and muss.

I'll keep that in mind for another test. By the way, it seems to like you better if you log out of LJ before trying to freeze a page (which, er, looking at your page you seem to have realised...)

Argh. AND sometimes it doesn't seem like it wants to download stuff from LJ at all.

Then again, my connection sucks over here sometimes, so...

(I've still got pictures turned off, in case I pick something stupid to go with this comment.)

Argh. And it still downloads images even if you've got them off.

Someone else test now, I think we're reaching bedtime for Juno...

It seems to be only good for grabbing a wanky post before it explodes into chaos. So, while no good for the huge entires with tons of comments, it's a good way to preseve the orginal text of a wanky entry before it gets deleted or edited in order to appear non-wanky.

alas, the best thought of tools on the internet are never as good as they seem at first.

I suppose this is good for when people delete community entries, but I have real problems with using something like this to record personal entries. It bothers me that Google caches everything, and now this? It's a legal and yet superbly annoying invasion of privacy.

Time to consider switching my LJ to Friends Only!

It doesn't really bother me: the way I see it is that if you're putting it, unrestricted, on the 'Net - then you're ok with folks doing what they want with it (subject to all applicable laws, of course). If not, then time to go to friends only, as you say.

I see this as an etiquette issue. Clearly, whatever is shared on the public internet can be copied and used for one's own personal enjoyment. But when copying information from a journal article that is later deleted by the author, I believe it is discourteous to share this information unless there compelling justification to do so.

Others can do what they want, of course... but saving someone else's private journal articles in order to preserve wank is a bit tacky, in my (humble) opinion.

But if it's a public journal entry, open to everybody and their third cousin twice removed to read, then it's not private by any stretch of the imagination. To my mind, it's like somebody putting a sign up in their front yard and getting pissed off that somebody took a picture. Now, if it is a friends locked or private entry, that's another matter entirely.

So, this still wouldn't allow anyone to screen cap any flocked posts, though, right? And you, an LJ user turning off viewing of images, isn't going to do a damn bit of good for when the freexeworks service views the page to capture it. Hmm.

Posting flocked posts is a big no-no at any rate. It's one thing to grab a public post that anyone can see, but grabbing a locked post is considered tacky. Grabbing a flocked post while it's unlocked, however, is okay.

And yeah, the main problem seems to be that it tries to save the images on the page. So it's good for small just-starting wanks, and capturing the orginal text of an ever-changing post, but not so good for preserving 50+ comments of wank.
