Penn To South Park Creators: Think of the Disemboweled, Mutilated Children!
Creators of South Park and the film Team America Trey Parker and Matt Stone recently told Rolling Stone Magazine that they thought there was no shame in not voting in the 2004 elections if you "don't know what you're talking about."

Actor Sean Penn, whose friends Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins saw their puppet versions dropped from a building and set on fire in Team America, respectively, has finally decided he'd had just about enough of their shit, so he flamed Parker and Stone in a public memo.

October 6, 2004

To Trey Parker and Matt Stone,

I remember a cordial hello when you guys were beginning to be famous guys around Hollywood at some party. I remember several times getting a few giggles out of your humor. I remember not being bothered as you traded on my name among others to appear witty, above it all, and likeable to your crowd. I never mind being of service, in satire and silliness.

I do mind when anybody who doesn't have a child, doesn't have a child at war, or isn't or won't be in harm's way themselves, is encouraging that there's "no shame in not voting" "if you don't know what you're talking about" (Mr. Stone) without mentioning the shame of not knowing what your talking about, and encouraging people to know. You guys are talented young guys but alas, primarily young guys. It's all well to joke about me or whomever you choose. Not so well, to encourage irresponsibility that will ultimately lead to the disembowelment, mutilation, exploitation, and death of innocent people throughout the world. The vote matters to them. No one's ignorance, indcluding a couple of hip cross-dressers, is an excuse.

All best, and a sincere fuck you,
Sean Penn

P.S. Take this as a personal invitation from me to you (you can ask Dennis Miller along for the ride as well) to escort you on a trip, which I took last Christmas. We'll fly to Amman, Jordan and I'll ride with you in a (?) 12 hours through the Sunni Triangle into Fallujah and Baghdad and I'll show you around. When we return, make all the fun you want.

Not ones to sit idly by while people rip them a new one, Parker and Stone had something to say on last week's 60 minutes.

"It's funny to take...activist actors and...elevate them to the level to what they think they are in their minds," Stone tells 60 Minutes correspondent Vicki Mabrey. "When Sean Penn is on TV before the Iraq War talking about the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty... that is pure comic gold. I don't care what side of the aisle you're on."

Both Stone and Parker seem to have it in for the Oscar winner. Parker told Variety last year when he announced plans to make Team America, "We hate those actors who take themselves so seriously and think they are a productive and important part of society. The subtle joke here is that all actors are puppets. This will probably piss off everyone in town--and might well be our swan song."

Shame. I hear Fallujah is lovely this time of year.

there's no shame in not voting if you don't know what you're talking about

At least it makes sense. I find the people who vote without knowing much beyond the mud-slinging rhetoric of television politics to be particularly asshole-ish, but hey...

I think my current favorite item of celebrity propaganda, however, is Drew Barrymore saying something particularly insightful about how we shouldn't be afraid that the government controls and regulates damn near everything. It was on... oh, some MTV special she did? Drew, sweetie, I liked Charlie's Angels and all, but I think you need to go get yourself a copy of 1984 or Brave New World. And then read a newspaper. And then be very, very afraid.

Eh. I'm more paranoid about the government than I was five years ago (Ashcroft, baby, I'm taking about you), but I'm cool with government regulation per se, and crying OMG! TEH FACISTS! ITS' 1984! when someone is ideologically comfortable with the FDA or the FCC is simple-minded to the point of blithering idiocy. One can be well-read, well-informed, and still not be a libertarian.

OK, I'll buy the not encouraging the ignorant masses not to vote just for the hell of it thing, but what's this deal about children in harm's way? Since when are all ignorant morons young and childless? I think Sean needs to get out more.

I think he meant to say that they wouldn't think that way if they actually had a stake in the Iraq war, which (he ASSumes) Trey and Matt don't by virtue of the fact that they're young and childless.

The term "alien logic" was used to describe this reasoning. Apt, yis???

My respect for Trey Parker and Matt Stone went down a hojillion points in this wank. I'm of the opinion that nothing is more dangerous to the election than a non-informed voter. If you don't know what you're doing...don't vote! You're making a decision that affects everyone else in the country...you need to be educated.

Shame on them. I can understand Sean Penn's reaction, but man was it wanky.

If Penn's response is c&p-ed, then that's what Parker and Stone were saying. I think the OP missed a "not" in her summary.

There's no shame in not voting if you're uninformed -- it's arguably better than the the reverse -- but there's plenty of shame in being uninformed in the first place, IMO. At any rate, if you don't vote, for whatever reason (and you're of age, etc), I figure you forfeit your right to complain about anything related to politics.

That's it.

We need to go back to the Studio System of Hollywood's golden age, when the actors were fucking pwned OWNED and couldn't say anything without the studio's permission. No more fucking inflated twats opening their mouths and thinking their opinions matter. Even if their kid is doing her/his job in Iraq.

Yeah yeah yeah. I live in a country where voting is compulsory, but that's because our population is too small for people NOT to vote.

Good god, can you even call it a fandom wank when it's the people who create fandomw who are wanking? (nb No, I don't think this is posted in the wrong place; just expressing incredulity at the high-level wankiness.)

I think Trey and Matt make a good point in a way designed to be more inflammatory than helpful: being an informed voter requires more than watching campaign ads. It is desirable to have informed voters. If SP were really concerned, he'd say, "I think what you meant to say is that, while not voting out of ignorance is shameful, voting while ignorant is dangerous to principles of representative democracy." I suspect that SP doesn't care how well informed voters are, so long as they vote for his candidate.

Boy, I think everyone gets the "stop being on my side, you're making my side look stupid" award on this one.

Not only is it okay to not vote if you're not fully aware of the facts, it's okay to not vote because you're aware of the facts and you don't like any of the options. Not voting is as valid a choice as throwing your vote to a cantidate. Hell, if less people voted out of obligation, there'd probably be less mediocrity in this system to begin with.

Personally, I think it's the responsibility of every citizen to be as informed as possible, and then vote. God knows They don't make it easy sometimes, but still... I guess I'm just a big squishy idealist when it comes to the idea that once every four years the citizenry could be arsed to go down to the library and do some reading.

The other thing that bothers me about the 'don't vote' stance is that it completely ignores local elections. Even if you think that both candidates for president are asstards and/or you honestly don't know a damn thing about them, surely one of the candidates for your town dogcatcher or comptroller or sheriff is more in line with your brainwaves than the other. Even if your views are far-out and fringey.... the Religious Right managed to control the more electorally successful of the two major parties, and keep the other one running scared, for the better part of three decades why? Because they STARTED OUT BY VOTING IN THE SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS THAT NO ONE ELSE COULD BE ARSED WITH. Now they own the Attorney Generals' Office.

So yeah.
