A Harry/Draco watercolor (not work friendly) is posted in [info]hpartremix and everything is ducky until [info]thebawmdotcawm asks the eternal question ...

Why do people with such talent waste it on such shit?

The sad thing is that I can understand the wanker. Glockgal does have talent, but no one ever critiques her, instead it's all "OMG YOU ARE THE GREATEST!"...and I feel sometimes she needs a critique, because after a quick glance of her LJ it seems she plans on going into art, and you cannot go into art without learning to tear your own work apart. But since she's only in a fan community...it's incredibly wanky.

Honestly? It's not the what so much as the where. The wanker seems, like me, inclined to critique art. It sorta happens when you're trained to do it...sad but true. However, it's fandom. I can understand annoyance at the "OMG I CANNOT DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE! U R SO GREAT!" reactions...but it's all in good fun. Who really gives a fuck?

Glockgal will learn soon enough what's wrong with her art from her first illustration teacher. No one made thebawmdotcom the art police.

Yeah, critique is good (and I do think there are things in the painting that could do with fixing); the problem is, that's not what thebawmdotcawm offered, at least, not in their original comment. Saying something is "shit" isn't very helpful.

I've hit the point in my art on DA where I get a lot of the "OMG KAWAIIIII!!" responses, but I posted in my journal there a while ago promising I'd never leave DA in a huff because I was getting tons of "OOO KAWAII!!" and hardly any good crit. As someone who /does/ try to give good crit, I know (a) how hard it is and (b)that it takes training and education to be able to do it. Most of my DA audience is pretty young and amateur: they're not going to be capable of giving me the crit I need. And God forbid I get angry because people like my work.

... None of that was really a response to you. It was mostly so I could post something slightly more substantial than ICON! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! which is what this comment is really about.

And now you can arrest me for gratuitous abuse of italics.

Well, what she seems to be doing wrong is drawing people that *gasp* look like people. That was the beef most of my profs had with me. OTOH, you said illustration teacher and we had no illustration program, just a bunch of people who could not say 'Fine Arts' without the caps.

They were quite fond of using 'illustrative' as a vaguely scatological pejorative.

/end violently bitter spooge.

Actually, the wanker seems more inclined to stir up shit than critique art, as he outlines in his master plan "I Like to Troll, but I Don't Like it When People Talk to Me!!"

For the record, Glock loves critique. Gives a lot of it herself. Ever since her first illustration teacher some eight years ago, buckaroo. *g*

There is a difference between somebody who points out assumed flaws and a person who offers correct and important advice.

There is a difference between a person who proofreads and a person who edits.

Much the same, there is a difference between criticizing and giving a critique. Not everybody is a good ArtCrit, just because they they can point out flaws.

It would be harmless to point out that you think Draco's shoulder looks awkward. But calling it shit or numerous other things? Ridiculous! As an art student, the assumption that she "needs" more crit, or something along those lines, baffles me.

If a poster truly wanted to be a good ArtCrit, it's better to format it and be a GOOD ArtCrit. Your crit must have a reference.

1) Begin your critique by summarizing what you know about the artist’s background and biography to help better understand the artist's motives.

2) Choose one or more of the artist’s works to critique. Identify the title, the medium/ art material used, and what year the work was created in for referential purposes.

3) In your critique you should at some point describe the work, analyze the elements and principles within the work, interpret the work, describe its purpose, and evaluate the work using aesthetic principles.

4) Once you have analyzed the work using aesthetic principles, you should point out the individual flaws and offer proper ways to correct them, if you know of them.

Those who can't critique really just complain.

Was I the only one who thought "So and so's so nice, they don't deserve this?" to be somewhat lame? Who cares what they're like? I thought we were looking at their artwork, not assessing their personality.

Personally I thought the art was interesting. I'm not an art critic. I've had absolutely no training in the art world and as such, my opinion's probably not worth a lot. I felt that it was a decent job, but there were areas that didn't quite look right. But, hey, I have no talent at all in the area.

Oh Dear Lord.
I hate getting all serious, but as an art teacher, these people need to get a grip. Every artist starts somewhere, and if they give in to bullshit, ignorant putdowns about what they should or should not be doing, they often times give up and say 'to hell with it' and the world loses yet another rare creative mind. Its bad enough our schools are dropping arts programs like its going out of style.
Yes, artists must learn to critique their work and have it critiqued, but honestly, this was done for enjoyment, not a freaking lesson.
As a professional, watercolorist taboot, I think it's wonderful. I've had college bound students not demonstrate as good a control of the medium as this.

Yeah, I suppose I'm trying hard to sound all intilectual-like, its kind of fun. I do this sort of thing every once and a while, start of "fight" on a livejournal or xanga or whatever, and when I either begin to lose or become bored, retreat back into the anonymity of the internet.

Oh, now I'm imagining karma bitchslapping trolls who think they can get away with anything on the internet.

Think of it: two people go out on a date. They fall in love. One night, they are discussing old hobbies. With a certain degree of sheepishness, he admits he used to love Livejournal. She says she did, too, and asks for his old journal name.

"Oh... HPSlashSucks666," he says, chuckling.

She stiffens. "You're HPSlashSucks666? The one who frequently trolled the RemusxSirius community?"

"Uh... yeah," he replies cautiously.

Her eyes flash. "I was the mod."

They break up the next day.
