I can totally understand outrage because when you go to a live show, you're paying for a LIVE PERFORMANCE. If the artist isn't even good enough to work without a digitally altered lip synch, then what the fuck are they doing in this line of work?

I feel the worst for her band. What poor form to just leave your band up there. They're actual legitimate musicians!

My family watched this and I laughed a lot.

From experience in other fandoms, I have heard directly from some artists that lots of singers lip-synch for television performances, mostly because they usually have to do several of them in a row.

So the defining thing for me was the fact that Ashlee bounced right off stage at the first sign of a problem, didn't try again, and then blamed the band when you could clearly hear the voice tape start before the band did anything.

Yes, Ashlee, even my half-deaf parents heard that. Way to lie.

I'm not sure what everyone's complaining about. Personally, I can think of a couple dozen "artists" who really ought to be lip-synching all their songs and letting somebody else do the actual singing. Everybody would be a winner.

Milli Vanilli should have not only been allowed to keep their Grammy, they should have gotten a couple more for their innovative approach to sparing us from their real voices.

I know this happened to another famous singer, and I'm at a blank as to who. Actually, it's happened to several artists (if you've ever seen the Top of the Pops 2 Comic Relief Specials you'll know what I mean), but I'm sure I remember there being another big fuss about someone.

Anyway, I can see why people are throwing hissyfits since it was a live show, but even then most artists interpret live as meaning 'I'm actually there' not 'singing out loud'. The Spice Girls couldn't sing live to save their lives (too many clashing accents, for a start), but that never stopped them.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but that isn't really Ashlee Simpson posting. The guy from LipSync.us responded to someone on FameTracker thusly:

The various "Ashlee Simpsons" which are posting on her website are fake.

If you were to check the source of that page you would see that Status: actually is "Registered User". They have inserted some javascript into their profile re-write their Status field.

Oh boy, this goes straight through my pet peeve about these "shake your little tits at the camera and sing in a high breathy voice" talentless nothings that "They" are insisting we accept as talented singers. Fuck.

First group I ever saw in concert was Queen. And they were, well... Queen. Queenyqueenqueen. I came out of there dragging my jaw on the floor and a raving, deaf fan. Talk about getting your money's worth.

Ever since then my attitude to people who like to claim they're talented singers and performers has been this: If I'm going to make the effort, after a long hard day at work, to drag my tired, saggy ass out in the evening and donate a large amount of MY money to your already overflowing coffers, in order to see you do what you claim you're capable of... then by christ, not only are you going to deliver what you advertise, but I'm going to see a large amount of EFFORT from you. If what I see appears to be anything less than 100% I'll slag you off to everyone I can. If you claim to be a singer, then you're going to fucking prove it.

Got problems? Not feeling on top form? Then cancel the concert and let people get their money back. If, however, your advertising is completely false, then frankly you should be fucking fined.

Spice Girls? *hawkspit* There was talent there all right. Truckloads of it. In whoever organised their bloody advertising. I wonder why not one of 'em's had a grand solo career.

Making web sites within three hours of the incident, trolling messageboards, making it headline news one week before the presidential elections (Are there no real news? Like 380 tons of super-explosive stuff now being in the hand of Iraqi insurgents thanks to strategic idiocy?), re-hashing "Ashlee Simpson sucks and should be evicted from the entertainment industry" a million times over on a thousand forums - uber-wanky.

This is hardly the first time a pop singer lip-synchs and experiences technical difficulties. Beyonce doesn't even use a microphone on her MTV awards performances. During last years EMAs her audio (including her voice) got stuck on a loop, very embarrassing, but there was no wank. This whole Ashlee Simpson thing appears to be blown way out of proportion when you remember seeing Beyonce "singing" without a mic and everyone still treating her as an "artist".
