" No, I have nothing against feminists, but...."
Over at Bad RPers Suck, saber_0rlando asks Why does nobody want to RP medieval women who stay at home all day and cook?

"Does nobody want to stay true to canon and stay in her place and cook? Yes, there were exceptions to every rule, but in general, back then "feminism" as such barely existed. The average woman in the Middle Ages - even if she were noble - was a wife, mother, housekeeper, and had no rights or self-esteem, nor did it occur to her that things could be or should be different. At best, she was just she sat around and looked pretty and was objectified. I am not saying that that's the way it should be. That's how it was."

Most people reply saying something along the lines of "It's boring." But the winner is rann, who seems to think that the OP is wrong.

"Sounds exciting to me! I'll just have my character be at the cookfire, I'll make sure to pose it whenever I stir the pot, add some herbs, or stoke the fire!
BABY CAN YOU HANDLE THE INTENSITY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

Wank-o-rama.

I especially liked the poster who was claiming that it was easy to play an "average, everyday sort of person." Umm, last I checked, an average guy in the medieval period would have been a peasant working out in the fields--and his wife would have been right out there with him. Unfortunately, that doesn't really lead to exciting adventures, which is why it's always understood that PC's in RPG's are not average, everyday sorts of people.

I find it a little odd that people are considering Rann wanky when the OP is saying that anyone who plays a medieval woman that doesn't cook, clean and get beaten up regularly by her husband isn't historically accurate.

I think Rann has a point, I mean I thought people played RPGs to get *away* from their real lives.

I mean if one wants to do stuff like cook, clean and garden then they can go do that in their real lives, why bother acting it out in an RPG?

I mean should we have the characters start talking about their bowl movements and where they went to pee?

Teeth. Sicknesses. Wounds. Do you play out your character to die slowly from a small cut by a dirty weapon?

Yes, I did that for a while. I could tell you about all the epic quests that never took place because of the constant issues with untransportable, traumatic-feverish characters. But you really learn to avoid fights with a realitic set of rules.

And as a GM, I learned to avoid the 'you have only ten days to save the world' sort of scenario when a horse balked randomly and left the rider (a key character) with a broken leg. Do you think my players gave me good critics for being an incorruptible GM and unleashing the apocalypse? Nooooo.

Wait. ...there are people who roleplay on Gor?

I LOVE this debate. Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic. I really do. Because I think people on both sides have a point. One the one hand, medieval life? Boring for men AND women. Most guys were not knights or nobles either. Also, hell yeah people want to play the interesting characters, and no, it's not going to be completely historically accurate, either.

BUT, it seems like 95 percent of the people want to play the Liberal, FreeThinking Anachronistic types, be they male or female. To me, that removes what could be a cool source of tension. Not everyone who doesn't play by the rules has to be flamingly out there--you can have someone choosing to work within the system, or someone who is too silly to realise that he or she is breaking social convention. But I've played in places where you run into so many female warriors with pasts like 'her family outcaste her for not being a Proper Woman' that I feel like I'm reading adolescent fantasy.

Also, it's fun to play someone who DOES follow the rules, because then they get to yell at all the young whippersnappers who need to be told How Things Are Done. My favourite character to play was a very traditional woman--she was so much fun, because there was always an element of tension there when she would encounter wandering rogues and whatnot. She started out as almost a parody, meant to be funny, but slowly became a lot more three-dimensional. Sigh, I miss her.

As for Rann, I don't even bother to try. I've acquired a reflex reaction for rabid Ranns: 1) Hold up a hand. 2) Say "Bitch, please." 3) Repeat as necessary.

But at least she's not Youlanda. Dear God.

I don't think Ran was being especially wanky- I think she was just making fun of the fact that it'd be pretty damned boring playing a housewife while all the other characters are out galavanting around.

It's NEVER fun to sit in a corner alone while the other players are doing something else (unless your character is a masochist...!). ;D

I've just got to say: I mean who would want to play a character who's only role is to sit there and look pretty

Ahahaha, if you have ever been so unfortunate as to witness any of thousands of public freeform RP 'inns' on IRC, that is all anyone plays. Well, they sit there and look pretty whilst also burdened with backstories of cosmic proportion, but it's amazing no one ever pauses to ask why so many demi-gods and arch-demonesses are sipping fancy wyne-with-a-y together in a generic mediaeval pub. (Too busy chronicling the many varied liquid gemstone colours of their gleaming chameleon eyes, I suppose.)

Wank is always made better when it contains historical inaccuracies. Mmm, tasty. I love it when people assume women have low self-esteem because they mother their children. Medieval peasant women from whom we have scant primary sources to actually know how they felt, no less!

I shall now giggle merrily through my day, thinking about those poor medieval women with no self-esteem who had to work! and cook! and raise their children! All while being pretty and objectified. Tragic, really.

Jenny: I milk the cow.

GM: roll for that?

Jenny: Oh shit, I got a critical miss.

GM: Right, you shoot yourself in the eye with hot milk.

Jenny: Crap....

Heeh.

[warbles]

Put another log on the fire,
Cook me up some bacon and some beans,
Go out to the car and change the tire,
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Baby, fill my pipe and then go fetch my slippers,
Boil me up another pot of tea.
Put another log on the fire, girl,
Come and tell me why you're leaving me.

Don't I let you wash the car on Sunday ?
Don't I warn you when you're getting fat ?
Ain't I gonna take you fishing with me some day ?
Well, a man can't love a woman more than that.
Ain't I always nice to your kid sister,
Don't I take her driving every night ?
So sit here at my feet because I like you when you're sweet
And you know that it ain't feminine to fight.

Put another log on the fire,
Cook me up some bacon and some beans,
Go out to the car and change the tire,
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Fill my pipe and then go fetch my slippers,
Boil me up another pot of tea.
Put another log on the fire, woman,
Come and tell me why you're leaving me.
Yeah, come and tell me why you're leaving me.

The only thing I have in reference to all this kerfuffle is the following.

How can it be historical fantasy? And why are we splitting hairs on historical accuracy when used with the word fantasy?

I would agree that after a while people get tired of the fantastical in their games and likes the more rigid structures of having characters that are mundane. So find more like minded people to play with and leave those that are still playing in the fantasy aspect of a RPG to play in their fantastical lives.

Or do it yourself, show the others how much fun it can be, prove that it can be done and who knows? You may win converts.

All of that 'homefires burning' role play works beautifully when the rest of the party sticks around. It becomes a bit more difficult when the party, you know, the rest of the group made up of your knights, rangers, mages, sorcerors, dragon hunters, witches, barbarians, fighters, assassins and thieves are off galavanting around the countryside with the adventure and the plot.

If all you have to interact with are the servants while they are playing around with the bog monster, eh. Sorry. Doesn't sound like a whole heaping lot of fun to me.

But then, I would be the barbarian.

If sabrer_orlando wants a historically correct woman in his/her game, and if he/she thinks they are so hellfired fun to play, then why doesn't he/she play one?

Does nobody want to stay true to canon and stay in her place and cook?

Canon? XD A real-life historical period is now "canon"?

*cannot comment further because the "real life canon" thing has her cracking up too much*

I was reading through the threads and enjoying myself immensely until I came across this comment.

What can it mean? I am lost. Is she positing that Boudicca was a medieval woman, despite leading the Iceni against the Romans?

The whole comment is utterly perplexing. It beats the hell out of the pseudo-feminist debate happening further up.
