umm.... ksomestupidquestions...
about anime/manga and BNF

*bows*

I'm trying to find some "beginners" hard yaoi on ebay...
"beginners" in that I don't know any good pairings, but looking for fairly hard manga or anime that is of some really awesome and romantic pairings...
Can someone suggest a title or 2?? There are, like 200 on there... some of them look really hot, but some look um.... very bloody (!) and a lot of them say, "WARNING: S/K ACTION!" like that is something really horrible.

Anyone know wtf "S/K action" is?? sounds like a property of a bathroom tub and tile cleaner or something...

also... what'sa BNF? pleeeeeease?
*clasps hands*

*bows and backs away*

'BNF' stands for 'big name fan' and (in my experience) is used to denote someone who's got a big name ego to go with the name. It's usually derogatory.

As for the yaoi, I'd suggest you go find a yaoi board to ask, since they'd probably be better suited to finding you porn that's to your taste. Personally, I have no idea.

Hi, new person as well (been reading for a while, but only got the account so I could reply now).

Anyway, people already answered the BNF thing, so I'll just get to the other question, even if it's admittedly pretty OT, and better suited for a general yaoi community. ^^;

My answer would have to be for me to first ask you: What exactly are you looking for - original yaoi stories or doujinshi featuring fandom couplings? I'm not much help with the first one, but I think I could point you in the general direction of people who could give you recs. As for the latter answer, I could only give a few personal recs for fandoms/pairings I like - other than that, finding what you want is all really a matter of trial and error at the very bottom (that's how I learned to pick out my doujin, personally).

And while we're all still asking n00b questions, can I hijack the thread to ask: What exactly is the meaning of "kerfluffle?" I'm guessing from the context I've seen it used in past posts that it has to do with posting something that is either wanky in and of itself or causes wanky reactions from others, but knowing the exact definition and usage would be much appreciated.

(Reply to this)(Thread)

Re:

omg I don't even know what a doujinshi is... but I'd like to read stuff that is relatively (hot) and relatively (graphic) as far as yaoi goes, and with established pairs that are relatively famous... so that when people talk about anime and yaoi, I'll have half an idea what they're talking about...

I see so many threads about yaoi, and comparing this pair and that pair, as to which is the OTP, etc, but I can't even figure out which magazines or which videos they are from... Searching on eBay didn't help much at all.

Oh, and yeah, I didn't quite figure out the gist of this comm until I had already posted. *blushes* I kinda thought that "fandom" meant all fandoms so I thought that anime/yaoi would be fairly well represented here. *shrugs*

no help on the *kerfluffle* though... I thought it was some kind of display of affection, like a super snuggle or something. Of course... 'ats just a guess...

*hugs*
thanks so much!!

Sigh, you're being way to vague.

First doujinshi are fan-made comics, you could consider them as illustrated fanfics.

Second you shouldn't get you series info from doujinshi. You should research the series first and then find what pairings you like and then search for the doujinshi.

Just keep in mind that a doujinshi is not an offical work, so just because you see a pairing in one doesn't mean they're canon.

If you want I could reccomend some series with yaoi themes and couplings.

ok.. um.. definitely what I was trying to do was research series and pairings... I tried looking on google, but um... most of what I found was in either japanese or german. *boggles*

so, sure! if there is an "official" series or 2 you could rec, I'd go with that!

I think I'm looking more for canon than non-canon.

Well for yaoi here are some reccomendations.

FAKE: Good series, quite humorous, being translated by TokyoPop so it should be easily available. [The OVA has been available for a while.]

Yami No Matsuei AKA Desendents of the Darkness. Lovely series with a canon yaoi coupling and LOTS of hinting. The manga hasn't been translated yet but the anime is being released on DVD. You can translations for the manga on-line.

Tokyo Bablyon and X/1999 Both done by CLAMP. Great series, TB is a shonen-ai classic, it's hasn't been translated but there are scanlations around, X is partly a continuation of the TB storyline and is being translated by VIZ.

Gundam Wing. This series is a wank and half but it's just dripping with yaoi subtext. Both the manga an anime have been translated.

Hope this helps!

Adding to Icz's excellent post, because I actually collect doujinshi...

90% of the time the doujinshi will be out of character with godawful icky scenes (I have this doujinshi in my collection that looked innocent on the cover and everthing... and inside was a scene where Wormmon gives a tied up Kaiser a blowjob), most aren't drawn as well as you'd think, and many outright ignore series canon. Thus they REALLY aren't good for judging a series. Think of using Harry Potter fanfic as a sample of the HP canon. 90% of the time you'll run into badfic with improbably pairings that aren't explained well, such radical deviation from the source that it might as well be an original fic, and so on.

If you can't read Japanese, you'll probably only be into doujinshi for the art. Also not very good to get into because you lose a lot of the context when you can't very well read what's going on.

Yaoi-wise, there are several series you can get into where the yaoi pairing is canon. Gravitation and Fake are probably the most famous examples of this. Personally I'm not a big fan of the HEARTS and FLOWERS and BOYS THAT LOOK AND ACT LIKE GIRLS WITH DICKS typecasting that's so common in yaoi, but that's just me. I like slash, not the fangirl yaoi stereotype.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

thanks!!

2003-05-26 12:27 pm UTC (link)
*nods* k the doujinshi makes a lot more sense, now... I imagine that, without the context, it would not be near as interesting. *pouts*

I think I did see "Gravitation" and "Fake" both on eBay, so, cool!! :))) Thanks so much, I'll give one or the other a try... Um... I kinda like the Hearts, flowers, etc... that you talked about, so.. (sorry)

Um... any clue as to what S/K action is? This kinda scares me...
um.. and I'm assuming that both of the series you mentioned are in Japanese? I'm thinking maybe I'm not cut out to look at yaoi, which is kind of a bummer, because the small bits I've seen online look totally cool. *sulks*

somehow, I don't think a japanese/english dictionary would help much, either. :P

If you like the fnagirl yaoi stereotype, you shouldn't be disappointed by yaoi then. As I am not of the straight persuasion, nor are many of my friends, it just bugs me, that's all ;).

Yes, both Gravitation and Fake are in Japanese (and are animated), though I'm sure you can find Gravitation fansubbed with things like WinMX, and I know I've seen Fake subtitled too. Whether it was a domestically released subtitled tape or fansub, I don't remember. The Gravitation manga will be translated by TokyoPop, though I'm not sure if the Fake manga has been translated yet. If you look hard enough for translations, the language barrier shouldn't be too much a problem. Oh, and I've never head of S/K, but this is probably because I am a hermit.

Japanese/English dictionaries only help to look up words you don't know. They're no replacement for proper formal language classes and don't generally offer much help in understanding grammar. And grammar is just as integral to understanding a language as vocabulary. And...

Sorry but I have no idea how to post wanks and this is just way to good to pass up.

Remember our good friends the Anti-Yaoi LJ group? Well they've realized that they were coming off as bigoted assholes with deep set sexual insecurities they've changed the name Anti-OoC Yaoi.

That in itself doesn't seem too wanky but you have to look at the page. It's very, very pink. That and they seemed to have removed any topics where Percy-Weatherby handed them their ass, and they've disabled anonyomous posting.

I think it may be British slang in origin...at least, I can remember my family and friends using it when I was very small, and I'm British. It must be pretty obscure slang even then, because it doesn't appear in my Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.

I'm British and I use kerfluffle quite a bit. Only over the internet have I met people who don't know what it means. Perhaps its a regional thing?

Man, the beaded the pony goes back to Blurty (which wasn't so long ago actually...) so I can't give you the original source material but if I remember correctly it was because of the Tinhats.

There was aheckofalot of wanks about it one week and someone (possibly sagra) commented that not only was the horse dead (as in "beating a dead horse") it was stuffed, mounted and beaded. I made an icon out of it *points to above* and from there a legend was born.

Or something. Dammit, there have been so many wanks they all seem to blend together now!

I guess it must be, because despite being a foreigner, I'm fairly well-acquainted with most American slang. So this was totally new to me.

*looks @ your icon* Heh heh, and here I thought it was the Toei PR Devils' attempt to deny the power of DaiKen. ;)

(Then again, I never saw much of the first season, and only some of 02, so I never really got to see much of that.)

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]ueuecoyotl
2003-05-27 09:43 am UTC (link)
Speaking (typing?) as the one who made the icon, I had originally wanted to do a Taichi/Sora icon because good LORD have you seen the vicious wanking over episode 50? I recall the biggest flame-war on the former fanfiction.net forums were the pro-Taichi/Sora people saying that theirs was the ONE TRUE PAIRING and the Yamato/Sora people coming after them. Unfortunately, I had an usually hard time finding pics of Taichi and Sora sharing the same screen.

Then, IT came. Grace said at one point that she had gotten e-mails from people who said that there were secret yaoi (Taichi/Yamato specifically) eps that were never broadcasted in the US, and their supposed friend with an insider source to Toei said so, SO THERE. Also, I had that image sitting on my HD for awhile. And the decision was made.

So, it was mostly due to convenience, rumors of yaoi eps... and as wanky as DaiKen fandom has been at times, it wasn't quite up to Taito levels.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]vanilla_tiger
2003-05-28 02:12 am UTC (link)
Thanks once more for the icon.

Episode 50 broke my heart. I was a young and innocent Taito fangirl and half-believed all those rumours on the internet that they would come out in the third series. I wouldn't have minded Taiora but Sorato just felt jammed in for the sake of it.

I keep away from Daiken fans as they often have a nasty habit of bashing my Miyako, who I worship and adore.
