Current mood:Spookier-Than-Thou

In time for Halloween, a Spookywank!
Long time lurker, first time poster. Go me.

Shadow of a Hedgehog, a Sonic fan community, has a few topics that always seem to cause problems. The Supernatural Events thread is one of them. Relevant posts are cut'n'pasted here, as viewing the boards requires users to be logged in.

It starts off innocently enough, with Acro asking about people's supernatural experiences. After a few pages, however, Nico notices something funny:
The funniest thing about this thread is the manner in which you correct each other on what these things do and are.
It's just fucking hilarious. : )

And, after being thanked for his insigtful contribution:
I'm serious here. The manner in which one of you claims to know more about the supernatural than another is just so fucking funny.
The first rule of the supernatural is that you don't know shit about them, or their nature. So watching people go like "OMG NOES, teh vampires hav no refexions, bitchees!" is just class entertainment.

Kit Jo Yuki doesn't quite get it:
Saying that my opinions are hilarious is like saying my religion is hilarious. Thanks, Nico!

People complain that they've "only been stating their opinions". Nico disagrees:
Now as to your pretty shitty assertions that "you are just stating your opinions".
"some people think ghosts hate light, so they dissappear when they are near it? I think not. SInce ghosts are usually a light grey or white, you just can't see them, there still there, you just can't see them."
"Ghosts hate light? Yeah, right. That's vampires."
"When you see a good spirit/ghost, do you know it's a nice one right away? Or are you frozen in fear until it says something/shows no intentions of harming you?"
"You can get warm, fuzzy feelings that will tell you the spirit means no harm and is friendly =D Or if you feel extremely frightened, and your mind is telling you to run and hide, then it's usually something evil."
"That's nonsense. Most of them want you to be aware of their presence."
See this shit? Prove it.
ASSERTING DOES NOT MAKE IT SO.
Prove this shit. Evidence does not constitute proof.

ShadowKusatsu chips in:
Nice how you contradict yourself Nico. You say that nobody can know anything about the supernatural, then you claim to be a bigger expert on the subject than me. Shouldn't you be off campaigning against free will somewhere?

Nico:
It's a pity you're too stupid to read what I said. It's also a pity that Kit Jo Yuki has no clue either. I give up with the faithful few, I honestly do.
Enjoy your kiddish escapism and professed 'real' knowledge.

People accuse him of childish insults and shitty trolling. The replies?
Yay indeed. Yet I am no shitty troll. You are refusing to attempt to justify why your beliefs on the matter of the paranormal are any more valid that anyone else's, since they are beliefs, and not knowledge, and Kit, although she attempted to reply, missed the point.
Until you do so, this topic has no place anywhere in World Gardens, because it is little more than rumourmongering, rather than decent debate.

This isn't just a random "sit around in a circle, give each other group hugs, and tell scary stories" subforum: it's for debate. If you don't like that, you shouldn't be in here.
Oh, and I'm not yet forcing my opinion on anyone. I'm asking others to back theirs up.

You have the right to state your beliefs right up until the point where they directly contradict others beliefs', and if your beliefs have no founding, you should shut the hell up. I used to go easy on this stuff, but I get tired of it after a while.
You get Blue and so on, who actually say "well I think", and you get Kit and so on, who say "no, x does y". I don't mind Blue's approach, I do mind Kit's. And if they're going to try and get away with it in this subforum, I'm not going to let them.
I may not be some kind teacher, but sooner or later they're going to learn that when they post stupid crap, people find it annoying.

Kit Jo Yuki is OMG so martyred:
So you're basically saying that I'm the only one causing a problem in this topic. No, a problem that bugs you. Well, I'm sorry about that. You know what? I'm sorry that I converse like I do. I'm sorry that I have opinions. I'm sorry that I can't be the perfect little girl. I'm sorry that I'm causing a problem by being myself. I'm sorry.

Nico isn't fooled:
[...]You're apologising for something you shouldn't do, most likely because you're trying to present yourself as the victim, which is really quite irritating.
You can hold your opinions that ghosts don't hate light if you like. I don't mind that one bit. It's when you say 'ghosts don't hate light!' as if anyone who holds the opinion that ghosts do hate light (a valid opinion, and one particularly well endorsed by the populace during the 13-15th centuries in Europe) is wrong that I get annoyed.

The Zodiak Is Back defends Kit, because even though she didn't say it, her post was clearly opinion:
Just because she didn't say specifically that it was "her opinion" doesn't mean that isn't what she meant... sometimes you gotta just realize these things... sometimes people forget to say "In my opinion, or IMO"... that doesn't make it any less their opinion, and you just gotta remember that, and 90% of the time, they know it's "their opinion", and not "fact". Kit, I can pretty much guarantee, knew it was her opinion, but that doesn't necessarily mean she has to state that every single time.

There's the standard suggestion of "ignore him and he'll go away", but the main participants don't pay attention. Elsewhere in the thread there's a mini-wank about whether Wicca is an ancient religion or something made up in the 1950s. Meanwhile, poor Acro desperately tries to keep on-topic. And, amazingly, no-one trolls in to bash the various claims made by the supernaturalites. Even a mention of being Otherkin goes unridiculed.

Yeah! This is to discuss serious paranormal experiences that somehow bisect Sonic the Hedgehog, not any sissy stuff!

Like that one time a Gonterman comic suddenly began to drip black ooze and all the character's heads began to spin around?
Strangely that made it less terrifying

Wait, that black ooze wasn't some alien musk and the spinning wasn't a mating dance? That story makes so much more sense now!

Saying that my opinions are hilarious is like saying my religion is hilarious. Thanks, Nico!

But your religion is hilarious. I'm laughing just thinking about it.

Wait...Wicca WASN'T created in the 50's?

Not doubting it's legitimacy or anything, but I could have sworn it wasn't an established practicing religion until then.

Oh, no, it was. Most sane Wiccans, a small but lovely group, admit as much. However, every religion has its nutjobs, and you get a lot of the "I am a hereditary Wiccan from five jillion BC" people running around trying to feel special.

And they are. They are. Just...not that kind of "special."
