Step aside, Anne Rice!
First time post, because I just had to share this...

We have a writer over in Stargate fandom who appears to be even more bat-shit than anyone previously reported (and that's up against some mighty stiff competition, what with the beagle botherer and the lunatic Jonas lovers). She's been writing a series of novels with her own original character shagging Daniel Jackson and posting significant chunks of them to one of the more popular lists.

However, this prima donna has a bit of a bug up her butt about the concept of people having access to the results of her god-like creative genius. So much so that she will only post part of her stories from her website on the list she's been spamming gracing with her creativity.

The plot thickens, however, when she then starts granting special dispensations to people who are disabled and therefore cannot read on the computer, since she doesn't want the general riff raff 'stealing' her creative product by downloading it. Because people should be reading it on her website, as God intended! In fact, people who download her fic in order to read it in other ways are, according to her, 'thieves' and 'site suckers'.

One person I know mailed the writer in question to get access to the rest of the story (since she has the requisite physical problems) and the writer set her a quiz on the previous chapters to test she'd actually read it before she would agree to send it to her! People who fail are allocated to the 'Hall of Shame' and threatened with being reported to their ISP.

E.T.A. And now we have a response from the author (let me know a url if anyone has saved this in toto, please?) and an attempt at martyrdom, after Geoshitties take down her site for either TOS violation and/or bandwidth spike. Oh, the humanity!

A lot of people tell me that I should feel "flattered" that people like to walk into this site and suck the whole thing down to their own computers and then walk away.

Does this creature not realize that when a reader visits a website, their computer automatically downloads the pages they view? Is that the "site sucking" she's kicking up such a fuss about?

I can't imagine what else it could be, but I also can't imagine anyone being so butt-stupid and so willing to display their ignorance in such a shrill and flagrant fashion...

Why do people bother, then? I mean sure, there are nutty egotistical writers plenty of people read, but those writers don't make people jump through hoops to read their stuff. And reporting to their ISP? What the hell?
How do all these people with no grasp of reality manage to function?

Reported for what? Bad taste in fanfiction?

Not to mention you can not tell by the stats if someone downloaded the story or not, maybe they were looking for there favorite part or realized after skiming that it was crap?

I read the disclaimer page and am still absolutely baffled as to why reading a story online is fine but printing it and reading it offline is stealing. The printed copies aren't being sold or passed off as one's own work, and even if they are shared with others, how is that different from passing a link around? I'm boggling here.

I'm all for people having control of their own creative work, but her prohibitions are nonsensical and if she doesn't want people downloading her stuff, she shouldn't put it on the Internet.

Therefore:

http://www.the-cloak.com/

Go there, tell it to disable Javascript, use it to go to her site, and it will let you cut and paste to your heart's content-- and also hide your ISP info from the crazy lady who'd publish it because you dared to read her publically available fan fiction.

She... she...

This is more batshit insane, in some respects, than those who lose it when other people base fics on their fics. Possibly on a par with those girls who charged people to read their fanfiction, but in a different way.

Someone once told me they'd printed off one of my fics, made a cover for it and bound it into a book. I thought said someone was weird, but sweet. Very weird, really, considering it was (and is) a WIP. But still sweet, and obviously not offensive in any way. Because, uh, how is it offensive and stealing for someone to read your fic offline instead of on? They're still reading it. Maybe they're saving themself a little money, which has absolutely no affect on your whatsoever. They're probably paying more attention to the fic than they would online, with IMs and money worries and whatever. And it's Geocities, for goodness sake. She's not even paying to put them online! Unless people are literally copying the site and then hosting the pages themselves, either the fics or borrowing the layout, thenreally, want grounds is she basing this on?

batshit insane, batshit insane, batshit insane

It's just batshit insane, really, isn't it?

More fic excerpts on [info]mst_eek:

http://www.journalfen.net/community/mst_eek/3745.html

Don't blame me if your eyes start to bleed.

The nimble fingers that had been so deftly, almost gently, undoing the buttons of her dress suddenly seized it by the collar and ripped it apart. Ivory buttons flew across the room. "You will see." Swiftly he picked her up off her feet and tossed her onto his bed. "I know what you think, I saw the symbol. Ares will not come for you." One thick ebony hand between her linen breasts,

...LINEN breasts?

holding her firm to where she lay, the other ripped the belt from waist. "Never will he come back here. Always, you are mine." Kanan grasped her wrists firmly and held them together while he bound them with the belt, as always she offered no resistance. No, she knew better than to defy him now, although part of him wished that she would, it would make his entering her that much sweeter. Kanan took the free end of the belt and secured it tightly to the bedpost at the top of the bed. "Come on, Cha'Dech, fight me. You know how much I love it when you fight." Kanan whispered in a voice which dared her defiance. Her slender white body trembled and shook beneath his thick black hand. "Go on; tell me that I'm wrong."

With everything she had she wanted to scream at him that he was wrong! They had come for her! He would see, tomorrow he would know! Tomorrow. But tonight she nothing more than the receptacle for her Master's spew.

Ha! She's responsed on her remdey page.

The idiot thinks she's gained more readers and still doesn't get that she cannnot TELL is people are downloading pages or just skimming and deciding they don't want to read it!

Or hell (the brave ones) could just be looking for a certain part they'd read before!
