For those of you who don't know, someone posted
something nasty about me on a rant'n'rave site, I had
had *severe* problems with this person for a few days
and when they didn't get their own way they decided to

material. Unfortunately, that rant caused a rash of
hits to my site, along with several complaints to
geocities by people thinking that they were amusing.
I did fire back on my site...I have the right to
defend myself. Why should the person who posted that

actual NAME is splattered all over the place? If you
want to start something like this, one should be able
to step up to the plate w/o disguise....yes?

My material was stolen by a rouge site and is
displayed there....however not in full and
(thankfully) it's just the first novel, which had
already made its way around the Internet fairly well
since March.

My site is down, it's not coming back. My stories are
not coming back in any form. I know most you think
that's probably good, however there were a lot of very
innocent people who were reading along just
fine....minding their own business (like I was) and
not bothering anyone (like I was). If anyone ever had
a problem with the terms of use for my site, they
should have e-mailed me for clairification. I always
welcome dissenting opinons but no one was
ever..well..grown up enough, to send one to me. The
terms of use for my site were not hard, they were not
difficult to follow nor to understand. If one didn't
like them all one had to do was to turn around and
exit. That's very simple to do, so I don't understand
why it was so difficult for some people.

I realize that the majority of fanfiction writers out
there do not have the same terms of use on their sites
as I had on mine and that's all well and good for
them. There is no law that stated I *had to* follow
the same rule. There is no law that states *everyone
on the Internet is entitled to do whatever the hell
they want....including stealing the work of others*.

Look, if downloading from Napster is a crime, an
acutal punishable offense and walking into a store
whose policy is clearly stated above the door
"Shoplifters will be Prosecuted" then walking into my
site and taking the material even though you were
asked not to is no different than the above. People
are faced with this 'moral dilemma' every day of their
lives and the majority of them make the good and just
decision and go on with their lives.

The security measures which exited on my site were all
*defensive* in nature....not offense. Each one of
those measures was enacted because people proved time
and again they couldn't follow the rules and be
trusted. I *hated* having to monitor that site so
much, I have a LIFE and a j-o-b....both of which
demand my time and attention. If people had just
looked at the 'sign above the door' and said "well I
don't like that policy" all they had to do was walk
out and go somewhere else.

So thanks to the List Mom who started this whole
thing....not THIS list's mom! You ruined my hard
work, the enjoyment of others and caused a stress
level which is intollerable...all because you're so
damn small and petty that you believe the entire
Internet should revolve around you.

I'm saying:

1) demanding real names on the internet, even if everyone on the internet knows your name, is stupid. Even if I don't get dangerous information from it, knowing I'm having a flamewar with someone named "Stephanie" instead of "DracoLuvr" makes it much better.

2) protecting your full name on the internet is your responsibility. If you don't want it out there, then you do that by not telling people your full name, or posting it on a website. In addition, you avoid giving clues to your location or very specific clues to your background.

If she did reveal your full name, it would have been very rude, since that's the common internet etiquette. But she didn't.

However, a simple google search comes up with your full name, on a website you run, fully associated with your real name. I know a whole lot of your background (military, disabled, and over thirty) simply from another comment in this post. Chances are I could probably find your state from other info (say, the kingdom of the SCA you're in?). I found enough information to figure out where you live in under two minutes, and I could pull up your address if I put another ten's effort in.

If Moon Mistress had shared your full name, it wouldn't be any more information than you chose to put out there. Which leads to...

3) You can't blame people for knowing or talking about common knowledge, or expect them to be more responsible for personal information than you are yourself.
