I'm sure you've heard by now.
Rumor has it that Nobuo Uematsu, famed video game composer, and the big SE have gone their separate ways .

The OP says, "Let the Flaming Begin"!

Responses range from "Oh, it figures", to "IT WILL BE THE END OF AN ERA!" to, "Good. He was a burnt out hack who hasn't produced anything of value since the 16-bit era."

Gee...I wonder which reply would get the most responses...

*glances up dubiously at Core Media Player*

And of course I would click over to f_w and read this just as one of my FF soundtrack MP3s starts playing . . .

There was music that was good in the '16-bit era'? I must have been playing all the wrong games...

I loved the soundtracks to a lot of 16-bit RPGs. :X

See icon. I still have Kefka's theme around here somewhere... Mind you, I never thought the 16-bit-era music rivaled the later music, if only because it was solid midis, but, hey. That's like saying "oh, I prefer midis to mp3s. Because I'm OLD SKOOL like that." xDDD

...I'm amused by the "OMG WITHOUT THE MUSIC FINAL FANTASY WILL DIE" responses. It's not like he's the only composer who ever lived. I'm just sad that the battle systems are changing. Am I the only one that likes turn based in this day and age? I feel so old.

No, I'm with you there. I can't play a lot of the newer games out these days (like Kingdom Hearts) because I lack the hand-eye coordination.

I was actually excited about FF12 (I haven't been excited about a FF in years) until they had to go and break my heart with an AI battle system. I hate AI party members, and man, I had always thought even if everything else did go to hell I could count on FF for turn-based battle. Not so. T_T

Nah, I'm a turn base fan, too. I'd rather not worry about ending up dead if I have to use the bathroom and don't want to pause. (and really, I only have a PS, so I've missed out on the more radical battle systems changes.)

The RPG styles are changing? When did that happen? I'm always on the lookout for RPGs that have real-time battles, and I hardly ever find any. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places. Ys: The Ark of Napishtim looks really good, I'm going to check that out when it comes out, but besides that I can think of maybe three that have come out in recent years. It seems like 99% are turn based. I can't do turn based. Sorry Turn-Based, it's not you, it's me.

Does anybody have any real-time RPGs to recomend?

Oh, lordy-lou. I like Uematsu well enough, in most of the games he's composed for there's at least one song that I really love even, but an awful lot of his songs sound alike. Just the other day I was listening to some MIDIs of his work, and for almost every one I could think of songs he wrote from another game that sounded almost the same. So, if the rumor is true, I won't mind that much even though I do think he's really good at his best.

If it's true then I hope Square contracts Yasunori Mitsuda right away for the next few games.

Same here about just not minding that much; I personally thing he did his best work back in the days of FFVI and Chrono Trigger (with FFVII a close second). I also ahven't really had much of an attachment to the later iterations of FF in any case, so...*shrug*

Well, Mitsuda Yasunori composed the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. (Also Xenogears and Chrono Cross, which is why he is my favourite game composer even though Uematsu's FF6 is still my favourite soundtrack.)

(basically reiterating what I said on the subject at the FF7 Citadel)

Hmm... Nobuo hasn't composed an entire Final Fantasy soundtrack since FF9, and has largely stuck to being a producer. If his proteges are sticking around Square-Enix, I don't really see the big deal...
