Halo 2/ Political wank!
Right before the release of Halo 2, EW does an interview of one of the grunts on the project. (Subscription required. Woe.)

Key quote: "You could look at it," Staten says of his Halo 2 storyline "as a damning condemnation of the Bush Administration’s adventure in the Middle East."

Conservative site takes it and runs with it, and there is much wank in the ensuing comments. Much speculation over whether Microsoft is conservative or liberal, which parts of it are conservative or liberal whether the left hand washes the right, and general agreement that Bill Gates is Satan either way.

But wait! Somewhere between the 101st and 150th comment, Joseph Staten, the poor grunt assigned to pacify the EW journalists, steps in to explain he was screwed over.

People wank anyway.

The lesson? Never feed live meat to reporters. And Our Dark Lord makes fucking awesome videogames.

we were nonetheless careful not to do anything that would be patently offensive regardless of someone's perspective (e.g. reward people for injuring or killing the game's female characters, something most folks would agree is offensive, full-stop).

Aren't you rewarded for killing men in this game? If you are, saying "OMG KILLING WOMEN IS WRONGX0R" is so stupid.

Not to mention - he just gave another "example."

Will the man ever learn!?

Well, the enemy are mostly aliens of unspecified gender, but, yeah, there's a LOT of testosterone in this game.

... isn't FreeRepublic an eternal fount of smug and nasty wank?

(I heard that some of the Freepers were celebrating Paul Wellstone's death...)

Freepers are, for the most part, a scary, scary lot. And I am a libertarian.

I can see them celebrating Paul Wellstone's death. (I can also see a sane member or two stepping in and telling the insane ones to cut it out.)

I try not to think too much about them - something about the general belief that I* am RONG and BRANEWASHED for being generally left-leaning just sticks in the craw a tad.*

... and, yeah, I do remember seeing some comments like that.

* - I also try not to think too much about folks that say that conservatives/republicans/libertarians are RONG and BRANEWASHED. It's not a political thing - it's a "Holy hell, why are they such dickheads?" thing.

He was a very liberal Senator who died in a plane crash.

It does. It sucks that he died and it sucks that some brainless Conservatives had to do such a stoopid thing.

Not to mention he died days before the election, and at his memorial service (which was held at the Target Center and was attended by God knows how many thousands of people)? His distraught best friend went a little over the top and said something like "We're gonna win this thing for Paul Wellstone," and he urged the conservatives to back away from their campaign. Odd, yes, but consider the man had just lost his best friend, his best friend's wife, their daugther, and five others. Still, his comments turned off some people in the crowd and even more in Minnesota, who did not see the whole thing but only clips on TV, and thought it was shameful and evil and partisan and Pagan and all kinds of nasty things. The media spun the hell out of it, and Rush Limbaugh and Tucker Carlson and their ilk got in on it and called it disgusting (I think Limbaugh said they "hijacked [Wellstone's] soul," and you know Limbaugh genuinely cared about the man himself, considering he used to call him Senator Welfare).

So yeah, that's why Walter Mondale, who replaced him on the ballot, lost to Norm Coleman. Basically.

Sorry for rambling. Still pissed off.

That's okay, I just attended a Vetran's Day Ceremony today about how honored the people who fight in wars are...only nine days after John Kerry lost the election in part because the opposing side lied about his military service, running his honor and suffering through the mud.

Was this smoker the sane member of the Free Republic?

I haven't been to the forums there for a long, long time. It had something to do with being sane, IIRC.

Uh, come to think of it, I went out for cigarettes...

This is my favorite comment - And the most telling of all:
Uh, bud, how about a little perspective here, it's just a video game. Most of the school kids I know are clueless bozos. They wouldn't know a civics lesson from a bicycle seat.

Well, well, well. That's called teh stoopid kids.

There are loads of school kids that aren't clueless bozos. I see them quite a bit, in fact.

I wonder just how many fresh young 18 year olds grudgingly went to the polls with Freeper Mommy and Daddy on November 2?

I also suggest going over to DemocraticUnderground.com (the Democrats' version of Free Republic) for wank pertaining to Halo 2.

I don't have the link handy since those bastards make too many topics to keep track of, but the poster basically whines about how people across America are spending millions of dollars on Halo 2 while other people go without food and shelter. A wanky fight about distribution of wealth ensues.

DUers scare me more than the FReepers do.

They scare me too! They all scare the crap out of me, frankly. It's all about control in one form or another. I'm not sure why none of them seem to grasp the concept of being grown up, making your own decisions, and living with the consequences.

I'm still on a quest to find an Internet forum where moderates, moderate-conservatives, and moderate-liberals live in (relative) peace and happiness.

I've been searching for a loooong time.

Fandom_wank? (Seriously. It's one of the few places where I can be a pro-lifer among people who are generally pro-choicers and not get attacked relentlessly, but have actually been able to debate peacefully, which has resulted in my exposure to the other side.)

Ya know, you are right. I saw a conversation between a Bushie and a Kerry supporter the day after the election that didn't result in massive blood loss. I've seen all sorts of civil discussions happen on F_W. Probably because we are terrified of becoming even slightly wanky ... here ... in this place.

Yes, because it's polite disdain for the ideas of the others, not the others themselves. Which I figure is progress, given.

FReepers are scary online. They're quite civilized and kind in person-- or perhaps, just the local ones are. Although Kristinn is very... intense. I counter-protest with them once in a while, when there's something going on in DC and I'm actually awake during daylight. Bizarrely enough, at the last thing I went to, they made me security. Me with authority scares me. ;)
