Foxtrot Wank!
The Foxtrot Feed over on LJ seems to be the new breeding ground for wank... some of you may remember a political wank that, alas, is no longer with us, and now they've managed it again!

Today's strip not only (gasp!) recycles old jokes (like that's never been done before in a daily comic strip ::cough::Garfield::cough::), but the real wank comes when [info]godisprolife (you can feel the wank just by the user name, can't you) says, "This is why my kids and I aren't having video games in the house".

Apparently, video games/TV in general are teh source of all evol, and everything that is wrong with the world. Go figure.

Haha, thanks. I chose it to be a poopface when I was 16, and it forced me into the Pro-Life movement:)
That comment by [info]godisprolife just cracks my shit right up. Riiiiight. An LJ username FORCED you to join the pro-life movement. \/\/hatEVAH!

hell, I watched Looney Tunes a lot as a kid, and I never hit anyone upside the face with a mallet.

You didn't? Oh man, you missed some good times.

Personally I always preferred dropping anvils on people. Great workout, plus, you know, horrible carnage. *nostalgic sigh*

Maybe not, but it would be pretty funny if you did. ;)

Meh? Dude, "godisprolife" (his name notwithstanding) actually comes across as one of the least wanky people on the thread. He gives his reasons for not caring for video games, acknowledges the counterarguments, gives his own counters, which are usually better-thought-out than the ones arguing with him, and finally lets it go after acknowledging that, omg, there's no universal rule here!

The wankier stuff comes when a few of them -- very obviously teenagers -- start arguing about whether kids will learn their violence on the streets and in the bathroom stalls if not allowed to play first-person shooters, and whether video games promote all sorts of mad l337 skillz to help the young'uns learn how to get ahead in this world. It's kinda amusing how hard they're trying to convince us of the social utility of video games. Methinks they've watched "The Last Starfighter" once too often. Come out of the light, kiddies, and clear your head for a moment.

Yeah, you can tell they're pretty young when they start talking about how young they were when they started playing video games...

Actually, they have proven that video games improve hand-eye coordination like woah, and they're looking into other reflex-related results.

Yeah, I have to admit that godisprolife is definitely not the wankiest one in the wank, but that whole "I learned to read when I was SIX OMG I R SMRT AND BETTAR THAN VDEO GAMEZ" bit was a bit much.

Especially since I learned to read when I was two and therefore fail to be impressed. :P

Godisprolife needs to have their icons revoked and then be soundly beaten with a large trout.

As for videogames, well they won't save the world but they won't destroy it either. Hell I was reading during kindergarden and probably would've been playing video games as well, but sadly the only system available to me at that time was Atari, and I just didn't have the love for Space Invaders my Dad and brother did.

Now Rampage, there was a game!

Bwah. Foxtrot wank. My life is now complete.

And given that I learned how to read from playing Zork on a Commodore 64, that whole "video games make kids stupid" argument amuses the everliving hell out of me. Easy Reader books are what make kids stupid. Such dull pointless shite has turned many a child off of reading for good, because let's face it, "See Spot run" is hardly sufficient motivation to get a child to willingly practice the activity. "Kill troll with sword", on the other hand...

Shockingly, godisprolife isn't the wankiest wanker who ever wanked in this thread. That honor goes to kellibunny, with her brilliant "video games are bad because they make little boys afraid of frogs!" defense. Because really, wtf?

Also bugged by the implication in her posts that there's something horribly wrong with a boy who's not interested in sports. I'm actually quite glad that such boys exist (and grow up into men who aren't interested in sports), thank you-- otherwise who the hell would I date? :P

(On a side note, I find it amusing that people who rail against violence in video games usually have no problem at all with sports. "I don't want my little precious playing this video game that will reward him for hitting people and behaving aggressively-- instead I want him to try out for the football team!" Yeah, that makes sense.)

I was pretty amused by the assertion that watching lots of TV somehow prevents one from reading. My family watched TV every night, together, and my siblings and I were quite fond of the afternoon movies (anyone remember The Great Race), yet I was a voracious reader from the age of 7, and still am. One never cancelled out the other.

While this wank amuses me, especially with kellibunny's leaps of illogic, I can't help but be vaguely jealous and crotchety over the subject.

I didn't get to play video games till I was eight, damnit, and I'm a pseudo-intellectual, antisocial, heavyset, lacking in hand-eye coordination bitch! Where's my benefits, huh?

Fuckers.

as well as more intelligent than the general peers of mine who did nothing but play video games all day since they were 3 and could hold the controller. I could start to read when I was six

Holy crap, when I was three, back in the unelightened year of 1984, I didn't even know what the hell video games were. And when I eventually figured it out, I think my intelligence was proven by knowing at a tender age that an NES was ten times cooler then Pong.

As for starting to read at six, uhm, that's standard, right? I think they called it kindgergarten. It involved circling things that don't belong and, in my case, mastering your indoor voice.

I played video games and I didn't start swinging from vines and jumping on crocodiles heads until I was at least 25.

I did however dress like a frog and play in traffic so maybe that's not the best analogy.

Am I wrong that by social conservative and political liberal, [info]godisprolife is advocating large government with heavy control of economy and the private sector, without the liberal virtue of freedom to choose one's own morality, spouse, lifestyle, etc? Am I missing something?

Speaking as a Libertarian.... buh? Did just he actually pick the exact problems I have with both parties, and think they were good things? I'm not saying it's impossible or wrong, it's just I've never seen it before. He's like a gangly unicorn, who is similarly white and only ever touched by virgins.

But yeah, seriously stumped as to what he believes and why.
