FAP, oh FAP, I do so love your wank!
This thread was actually started a while ago on FAP. It was buried for a bit but has resurfaced. And thank goodness! I had forgotten about how lovely it was.

The thread starter wonders why the standards in Harry Potter fandom are so low.

I know I always choose a fandom based on its "standards" and not, say, the source material.

Haven't the originators of the wank, Bilbo Baggins and friends, showed up on fandom wank before? I think they were claming to be the standard bearers in the crusade for a better, smarter, bitchier Harry Potter fandom then, too.

Maybe they were part of the Plebe wank from a while back.

Crusade.

Hee!

That sounds right. Bilbo did use the word plebe several times with much viciousness. Good to know that somebody is out there doing the thankless job keeping the grammar-challenged plebe trash from overrunning us all. *wipes away tear*

You know, every time I look at that icon, I keep expecting it to flash the word "catboy" at the end.

Yes, but do not post a stong dissenting opinion about the wankiness of Antiplebe.

Because, yanno, they have a purpose while fandom wankers are just l00sers.

Wow. I find this particularly amusing, because this Bilbo Baggins character, whoever she(heit?) is, has left me some really, er, dumb reviews on my stuff over at ArtisticAlley.

And when I say dumb, I don't mean "disagreeing with my artistic license." I mean really effing stupid and pointless.

You know, a few days ago I wrote a rant that is kinda sorta tangentially related to this comment of yours. Now I'm waiting for word-of-mouth among my pals to do its thing, and hopefully I'll get some hilarious kerfluffery in reply.

Wow. Badfic = cancer. And this:

Those writers who aren't simply mediocre, but abysmally bad should be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.

I think this could win Wank of the Year, simply for this one post. Lulinda, I *do* hope you were paying attention.

The moral of the story - or something - is that badly-written fic is a cancer and needs to be excised before it takes over and kills us all.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Oh man, everything everyone else said already. And I love how she's awarding points for "phrasing eloquence." You best back da fuck up if you know what's good for ya, Lulinda!

The ones that are just mediocre and have at least basic technical skill, or that little spark that makes a story come to life, should be nurtured. Like mushrooms. We can keep them in the dark and feed them sh...concrit.

I'm supposing that's the shit concrit they're too full of themselves, right?

I also love how writing badfic = self-destructive behavior.

Now to get on my moral high horse

You mean you weren't on it already? Wow.

Someone should do it. And I'd say "I will," except I'm such a rude arrogant cow...well, who'd listen to little me?

Actually, I probably wouldn't do it. Contribute, yes, but I'd never want to run it. Last thing I want to do is become a BNF in any way, shape or form, that's just creepy and I'm not the leader type.

Someone should paraphrase that one quote from that article criticizing one of the American Idol finalists a while back, and answer her with that. Lessee, how'd that go again...?

...oh yeah.

"You can throw the BNF-sized fit after you score a BNF-sized hit."

Here's my question. Do these people (in the thread I admittedly can't stomach reading right now) want us all to have the *same* standards? Who's to say that my definition of badfic is consistent with anyone else's?

And if you want to not read the 'cancer' that is badfic, why the hell are you hanging out on places like Fanfiction.net and Fiction Alley, which appear to publish just about anything? :-P]

Bingo-bango, I think we've got a winner. I've been scratching my head for years now as to why certain groups of people hang around boards for no other apparent reason than to bitch about how stupid everyone else there is. One would think that if intelligent discourse was what they were after, they'd go somewhere else. Some people like to pretend they're the big fish in a small pond. Big ponds and other big fish are too threatening.

[info]hugsnkisses

Exactly. I started off in fandom reading bad fic (is there anyone who didn't?) and loved it. Gradually as time went on I learnt to discern what "good" and "bad" fic was and considered myself well educated. A few months after that I came back to a fic I hadn't finished but which I thought was one of the best ones I had ever read. It was awful. Not completely, but enough for any of you to denounce as "bad fic".

So we shouldn't judge; I feel "enlightened" now, secure that I am a fanfiction connoisseur. Able to rant about "showing not telling", and character developement and the like. But really, I think I'd be just as happy back reading terrible Gundam Wing mary-sues, if not more so. Then, I'd read a story no matter what - and truely enjoy it. And I did enjoy them, I cried over one of the bloody things. So yes, we can rant about mary-sues, and the death of good fanfiction etc. but they're happy. And isn't that just what we all want? A happy, peaceful fandom?

*snerks* Well, maybe not. Then what would become of our darling FW?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]aruru
2003-05-28 03:50 pm UTC (link)
Exactly. This was the same as me back when I discovered the existence of FF7 fandom way back when. I even read some shit that if I looked back on it now, not only was it bad, but potentially rather squicky. (Ah, bad!squick... somehow always squickier in my eyes than regular, run of the mill squick, even if it's actually tamer.)

So yeah, how would we be able to develop any personal standards without badfic around, to compare against the good stuff? It'd be like having a scale with no weights. Or maybe the other way around. Whatever.

Taste is something that is developed with time, experience, and amount of exposure to the subject matter. Which is why the older fans (not necessarily in age, just in years of fandom) who don't seem to develop their tastes at all over time baffle me - it kinda shows a lack of growth. Or something like that, I'm not quite sure how to word what I'm trying to say.

It's too goddamn early for me to try to be articulate. *ZONK* zzzZZZZ...
