What part of "100 words" don't you understand?

In [info]untrue_accounts's LJ:

Dear Fandom: Plz stop sucking. Kthx.

Finally, wanked! Some people seem to take their drabbles so very seriously.

*shrug* I always thought a drabble was 100-500 words, but if a community's called [insert something]_100, I usually try to make it fit the length requirements. It's a good exercise for me, like writer's calisthenics; it forces me to be concise.

I think that's what it's come to be known for many writers, and I get that, and I allow any ficlet under 500 words to be posted on my drabble com, but it originated as a specific writing challenge to get people to write exactly 100 words.

Yeah, to me it's more like, "how fucking hard can it be to go by the rules?" -thing. I don't really care whether anyone thinks something in 134 words is a drabble or not. If it's in the comm rules, then it's the rules. I thought the editing and learning to make every word count was the whole point of drabbling, from a writer's POV.

I've been waiting all day to see this get wanked!

I always thought a drabble was 100-500 words, but if a community's called [insert something]_100, I usually try to make it fit the length requirements.

Especially when it's in the rules of the community, and it's clear the people are aware they're violating them.

It's a good exercise for me, like writer's calisthenics; it forces me to be concise.

:D That's the best part of it, that it's a challenge.

Ehh. I don't think this is all that wanky, even in the comments people are being fairly polite and rational.

And there's nothing wrong with taking your work seriously, but I don't think it's taking drabble-writing too seriously to simply give some thought as to what a drabble actually is.

I agree with [info]boniblithe. As the co-mod of [info]lost100 on LJ where people have actually posted 3,000 word stories, I have often wished people would be a little more purist about this one particular format.

Agreed. It's not iambic pentameter if it's 25 syllables; it's not a drabble if it's not 100 words. :p

I think it's wanky enough, if only for the "Beta my precious drabbles? NEVER!" and the "Follow the rules? Whatever!" sentiments.

If I ran a drabble comm, and people posted with 3000 words, I'd be laying the smackdown like a little Serious Drabbler with my trusty Beta Squad.

We are simply a fandom like that. We wank in a civilized manner, while talking behind each other's backs. We don't name call, we don't haul out BNFs to bitch through sockpuppets. We fight like Tatsumi vs Muraki - with polite forms of addressing each other while trying to kill each other. =D

...damn, does it make me yearn for the knock-down, drag-out Final Fantasy fandom fights, though....

I can't dream of any writer who is loyal to their work wanting to let anyone cut off or add to their drabble. I know I wouldn't want anyone touching mine. Now, I understand professional writers use editors ... but fanfiction tends to be a far more personal thing.

And Anne Rice Syndrome strikes again!

Honestly, if she won't let someone touch her drabble (which, by definition, I've always held to mean 100-words-precisely) of
fanfic (which doesn't belong to her and aren't her creation) then on the assumption she ever gets published, she will never let someone touch her precious original fic!

Incidentally, what part of "fuda100" didn't they understand?

- an author loyal to her work who practically begs for betas 'cos there's always mistakes -

I mean, does she thinks it's personal and therefore not subjcet to any...outside influence or advice just because it's not published? I'm not seeing the logic. She can't think it's more personal because she's mucking around with someone ELSE'S own, personal, original creation, can she?

Can she?

Who the hell gets someone else to beta a drabble for word count? The whole point is to get it to 100 words yourself. That's the challenge.

Bzuh? Drabbles are *all about* editing. Yeah, I get not beta'ing 'cause, dude, 100 words. But if you don't edit you don't have all the fun of examining your pretentious wordy-ass style and decimating it for the sake of an arbitrary challenge. And then where are you? Where?!

It's just a fucking OFFER someone was nice enough to give and not EVERY FANDOM THING IS ABOUT YOU. SIT DOWN, UNTWIST YOUR PANTIES AND STFU.

You can tell I dislike whiny self-important Anne Rice wannabes people, yes?

And yes, if it says '100 words', that is what I will write. The hp100 comm still seems to not grasp that concept, though. [sighs]

But we still don't have hugely wanky BNFs. We're such a sad fandom. I need to get Mary & I to declare ourselves the graphic whores of the fandom, maybe get Catie & Kat to call themselves the fic bitches, we can be a BNF elitist group!
Do you think anyone would go for it?

Or shall Yami no Matsuei forever more be a BNF-less fandom that wanks itself in a restrained manner, without much name-calling in it's spooge?
