Stone's 'Alexander the Great'
This may not technically be fandom, but since it involves a film that is already talked about quite a bit on LJ and IMDB, and that already has been wank on this, I thought it would amuse. (and I'm sure it's gonna make fandom soonish).

As you probably are aware Oliver Stone is doing a film bout Alexander the Great, and he's making him bisexual.

Apparently there are people not happy about this, and not just fundie die-hard Christian fans:

ATHENS (Reuters) - A group of Greek lawyers are threatening to sue Warner Bros. film studios and Oliver Stone, director of the widely anticipated film "Alexander," for suggesting Alexander the Great was bisexual.

I know the cheek! Next thing you know they will show that he worshiped pagan Gods!

The best bit:

"We are not saying that we are against gays but we are saying that the production company should make it clear to the audience that this film is pure fiction and not a true depiction of the life of Alexander," Yannis Varnakos, who spearheads the campaign by 25 lawyers, told Reuters on Friday.

And here I was thinking the film would be an EXACT and true portrayal of Alexander's life, right down to the fact that he looked like Colin Farrell (if only).

And for their next case, the Lawyers will be out to disprove those horrible rumours about Sappho's sexuality.

It occurs to me that getting angry about a film that portrays Alexander the Great as liking guys is a wee touch like getting angry at all those damned photos that show the sky as blue.

This is not the first time Greeks have been angered by suggestions Alexander was homosexual and had affairs with young men.

Two years ago hundreds of northern Greeks from the province of Macedonia, where he was born, stormed an archeological symposium after one speaker presented a paper on the homosexuality of Alexander. Police were called in to evacuate the participants.

WTF???

If teh horrible truth came out of the historical closet, and the Greeks were suddenly forced to concede that Alexander was less homophobic than they apparently are, what would happen? Would all their dicks simultaneously fall off or something?

Also, do they not realize that everyone else in the world has known about Alexander's sex life for the last several centuries?

And will we get to see Colin naked?

Okay, I'll be quiet now.

And here I was thinking the film would be an EXACT and true portrayal of Alexander's life, right down to the fact that he looked like Colin Farrell (if only).

It's going to be a rillyrilly true film, in the same way that King Arthur was a historically accurate film about Arthur, and Troy was faithful to the plot of The Illiad.

This doesn't change the fact that Alexander was at least bi, that I could dig up journal papers to that end, and that there's not going to be nearly enough nudity in this film.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these kind of lawsuits have to have an injured party? And again, Alexander's not really capable of being injured by these scurrilous rumours, what with being ded for a few thousand years. Unless, as xero_sky suggests, their penises will fall off at the suggestion that Alexander was Teh Gay, I can't see how they're hurt by this.

This seems so bizarre to me. I mean, I've *been* to Greece. Greece is quite possibly the gayest country in the world. Seriously, if you sit in the outdoor cafés in Chania, Crete and watch people go by, you will see at least a dozen pairs of men (and women! Remember, the Greeks invented lesbianism!) driving by on mopeds, holding hands, etc, etc. I actually remember a pair of lesbians *winking* at me (I guess I was staring - they were cute, shut up!) as they walked by!

Sooooo... Alexander being less gay than the rest of the country should make sense... how?

Even if Alexander was not bisexual (I know, I know. Go with it for a second just for the sake of argument), these lawyers still have no case. It looks like they're accusing Warner Brothers of libel. In the United States, the law states that it is impossible to libel a dead person. In other words, if I were to publish a novel about the deep, romantic affair between Bill Clinton and Al Gore today, I would get into trouble because they were still alive. However, if I wrote the same story about Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy, it wouldn't be considered libel because they're both dead.

And unless the Greeks are hiding something very important from us, Alexander has been dead for quite some time.

In a purely semantic way, I agree that Alexander was not bisexual. He was also not straight or gay.

It's like calling Alexander a "conservative" or a "liberal"--whether or not he seems to fit the characteristics of a label, that label did not exist back then. The concepts in society were so different back then that the way we choose to label things just doesn't fit.

In Alexander's time, relationships were mainly defined by the social position of the members, not just their gender. Of course, women held a lower social position than men, so in some respect love between men was seen as superior to love between a man and a woman, but it's still so different from how we now see it that it seems inaccurate to use the term "homosexuality."

I think the problem with both the fans and critics of this movie (that hasn't even come out yet, for the love of God) is the fact that they're forgetting it's not called The Homoerotic Adventures of Alexander the Great.

The movie's about his life and his accomplishments/failuires/what have you, and his sexual preference is only -one- aspect of his overall persona. It doesn't -define- him. Most people would define him as a king before they define him as a queen.

I am offended by this movie, not because of teh gay, but because my childhood dead!crush is being played by a greasy hair-leprechaun who resembles Barney Rubble surrounded by a cast attempting every accent they can possibly think of. (I love you, Angelina, but what's with the "keel moose and squirrel"?)Also, the quality of dialogue in the trailers and clips makes me want to go in a corner and cry, but not as much as it makes me laugh hysterically. Also, the hair, sweet Jesus, the hair. Also, OLIVER STONE. Fer crying out loud.

And who, exactly, is the plantiff in this case? Did Johnny Cochran buy a ouija board or something?

Perhaps after this lawsuit, they may want to try defending their fellow lawyers who are unfairly labeled as gay,
Roy Cohn, for example

Meh - I hate to think about the class action those devious intraweb lawyers want to launch on behalf of the poor mal-represented Spartans.

They should call themselves "Lawyers Against Bum Chums" and be done with it.

The only unfair thing about this movie is that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in it, but will not be playing Alexander's boyfriend.

Although he does have pretty long hair and wears a skirt. It's almost good enough.
