What is with the obsession there with "no one-line posts"? I get the discouragement of no "Me too!" posts, but if they're asking a simple question like "What religion are you?" are you required to respond with "X, and here is at least at least 99 more words explaining why"?

Well, if you have a question like that, you're encouraged to create a poll, so people can vote instead of posting one-liners. We don't put restrictions on poll-creation - as long as people are registered and active, and the poll is on topic, they can ask what they want. But before we restricted one liners in the discussion threads* we had a lot of things like "what book/fic should I read next?" and one or two word answers - why not flesh your answer out with a "why"?

* one liners are allowed in the review forums, including the Cookie Jar fic-posting-and-reviewing forums, as well as in the Help forums, and a few other places that lend themselves to short posts.

I have written a Father Brown fic, but it is hard to do more or better than Chesterton did.

But let me try to get more words in here so I don't get penalized for posting a concise sentence. Perhaps I could squeeeeeeeee! over Tom Felton a bit? I quite agree. There are countless occasions wherein all I personally had to say could easily be resumed to one sentence. (For instance, sometimes all someone wants to obtain is a book rec, no "personal review" attached. What're you to do? Provide a title and a link, and that's pretty much it)

It can get a bit unconstructive and time-leaching to just have to go through a good number of replies that were self-sufficient as one phrase, but had to be elaborated into a thousands so that, OMG, the rulz wud n00t be brokkn.

On the other hand, though, rules are rules. Want to actively participate in those forums? Play nicely with the other kids and follow the mod's lead.

After being a mod for a long while, I feel the mod's pain.

Our rule was "do not double post." If you had two people to address, you did it in the same messege. If you'd just posted and saw a response that came before yours that hadn't been there before, you edit the post you just made. That sort of thing. It was supposed to keep unneeded post count down.

When that didn't happen, I had to merge the two posts, edited the messge to add, in a different font, "Please do not double post, edit the previous post. Please read the board rules for details. Thank you." and then making sure I left an "edited by" time stamp so there was evidence it was me.

Occasionally, people would freak and accuse me of "warning" them (warnings= the karma system, and it was obvious I hadn't increased their Karma) or giving people a slap on the wrist, or making steps to get them kicked off, and that wasn't faaaair, because they were neeeew, and I was being meeean.

All I had done was edit together their post and asked them not to do it. I didn't handle that privately because that way other newbies who might make the same mistake would see it and learn quicker, and it wasn't a big enough deal to PM them over.

But no. I was KICKING THEM OUT OMG or BEING MEAN TO PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T KNOW BETTER.

Er, I don't understand how this wank has turned into wank about FA's rules rather than FBP. FBP has been around FA long enough to know the rules, and is just stirring things and being generally wanky with the lj posts.
I've been slapped with the one-liner thing on FA a few times too, but you know what? Thems the rules! And it DOES discourage meaningless posts, so I'm sure we can all cope.
