Reposting the CC wank....
Let's try again, true believers. Since someone decided to bah-leet the original post -- apparently after a few people complained -- I'm reconstructing this, with a moral: Dun delete your posts without a good reason...it pisses us off big-time. So, for anyone unclear on the concept: please don't delete your wanks without good reason, and people bitching about them isn't a good reason in and of itself. Cause, you know, wankers and friends of wankers will always bitch.

Someone apparently broke into Cassie Claire's apartment and robbed her and her roommates of lots of expensive computer equipment. Not wanky, just tragic. She appeals to the masses to try to behave...a dictum they promptly ignore as some people ask about Cassie's ongoing fanfic magnum opus, to which maybethemoon and littletort react very badly. Tackiness begets ranting, and such is life on the Internet.

The original post also included a link to a comment about collecting money, and, while I'm too lazy to search the comments for this, someone did send me this link. Sounds eerily familiar, but I'm just presenting it here for y'all to comment on.

I think what would be an even better idea is if we could raise the same amount of money and send it to this girl and others who genuinely need it.

Whatdaya say F_W?

Set up the Paypal and I'd be in. For serious. The patronage she got in a genuinely nasty situation was breathtaking, I'd happily bung in a few dollars.

You'd need someone else to be in control of the funds because I have some serious money issues.

Also I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to set something like this up.

But if there is someone out there who's good with money and running charities I think this could be a chance to do some real good.

A good idea.

But if HP fandom is so fucking wonderful, why aren't they setting it up? After all, aren't they the ones that is so philanthropic and into taking care of their own? I mean...LOOK, they've done the fundraising thing for others!

While I'm still shaking my head in confusion (6 pages? over this? in 3 days?) I rather like your approach.

That Girl seems much more in need than CC. I'd send her 2 or 3 dollars, and I'd ask everyone else to send the same.

I mounted an offlist campaign for a BNF once, but she was about to lose her home for lack of mortgage payments, and she was working the only hours she could get as a telemarketer and ... eh, never mind details. Let's just say it was worthy, and I knew her in RL. So not all these things are stinky. In principle.

Despite the stinkiness of CC's apparent avarice, I remain baffled by all the wank. If people are willing to pay for what they've previously gotten for free (read: fic), what's the gripe?

And if you give me PayPal/an addy, I'll cheerfully send 5.00 to That Girl, who actually seems to need it.

If she's lying, I'm only out $5.

Certainly, you just need to visit the site that was mentioned her comment. Here's the link:http://www.4christina.org/

You can find a link to Paypal under the donation button.

That's one of the many iffy things for me. Because isn't that a direct violation of the standard disclaimer - that is, I do not make any profit off of this, these are JKR's creations, blah, blah, disclaimercakes? Some tiny, paranoid part of me is theorizing that this will just hurt fandom in general. The WB is going to be handing out C&D's like crack.

Not only that, CC is no longer playing in JKR's playground - she's urinating on it and then selling the clumps for profit.

Oh, wow. F_W as a philanthropic concern. It just gets weirder and weirder.

I think that's a great idea. FWers could put there money where their mouth has been on this thread. I've never used paypal, though. Is there a snail mail address? Isn't there some way of leaving a comment with your donation in paypal? People could say it was from a member of this place and maybe the recipient could keep a running tally? (Maybe someone could set up a journal here as a tally check too? Though I'm not sure if people would want to say how much they gave?) I'd definitely be up for giving something.

Check out the site http://www.4christina.org/ there's info and a link to a Paypal button there.

I think one of the best things we can do is to get the word out so tell your friend, heck tell your enemies to.

I know some folks have webcomic and webpages and I was wondering if they could mention the site and put a link up on their sites, would that be a good idea?

I chipped in a couple of bucks -- wish I could do more, the government needs to give me more student loans, heh heh.

I'll try to remember to post to my own LJ; I hope the word spreads on this one.

I think that's a fab idea. I'd contribute if I had a job. Sadly, no one wants to hire me around here, despite my having mad L33T skillz. Damn you, Pier 1!!!

Anyway, even though I can't contribute, if something does get set up, I'd be happy to spread the word around and get people involved as much as I can.

I lost my mother to cancer. I'm also a graduate student, who's experienced her laptop tragically going on the fritz.

Want to guess who just got $10 out of my stingy, stingy hands?

I'll give you a hint: without my laptop, I had to deal with the end-of-semester papers in the computer lab. And I was JUST FINE. I was actually way more productive, since lab computers don't have The Sims installed on them.
