So, Wicked leading lady Idina Menzel is married to actor Taye Diggs. Recently, it's been reported that they've been receiving hate mail because of their interracial relationship, some of which has included death threats.

A few over at [info]wicked_musical have made icons in support. It's not long before someone gets offended, because making icons about something so private and serious is "virtually sick."

Bwahahaha!

I knew there was a reason I left that community.

I wonder if there's ever been a "Mr. Pizza Man!!!" icon made yet... I had always intended to make one. ;-)

People still give a damn about interracial marriage? What century is this again?

Sadly yes. Although it seems like it's usually black people who have the problem anymore and not white people so much. And, of course, they're not racists, just assholes.

When I was dating a black guy in NYC, black women refused to wait on us several times. I was a white fugly hor and he was betraying his race by being with me. Ppht. It's all stupid.

Isn't that like, grounds for getting fired? Y'know, being a bigot? And imagine the hell fire if you refused to serve her. *eye roll*

I had the same thing happen to me in college. The white people didn't care. The black girls treated me like shit.

Yep. Sadly, my step father is convinced that the only reason that white women go out with black men is that they're trying to rebel. And white men never go out with/marry black women. So he claims.

The twilight zone-y part? His best friend is black.

There are other ways of showing support than drawing attention to the senstive subject

Because the best thing to do is ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist!

I'm more offended by the seriously shitty icons those people are making. My eyes can only bleed so much, people!

Also, Idina is my girlcrush. She rocks.

[The icons are] more disrespectful than anything..

racial discrimination is ... i don't know... it disgusts me. but it happens every day to many people. i know to a certain degree what it feels like, and personally, if i were taye or idina, i would not want fans posting livejournal icons about this serious situation.

It happens everyday people. Lets stop makeing vissual reminder for people thay are victoms of hate crimes.

So that everyone can ignore the fact that there are hate crimes? So they can all forget and pretend that racism is a thing of the past? Sounds like a great idea!

If they were to get angry about icons (because somehow using public photos is an invasion of privacy? WTF?) I sincerely doubt that they'd be especially angry about the icons stating how absurd the idea that they shouldn't be married is.

In what universe does shit like this make sense?

Fucktards.

The best part was the response to that incoherent post about 'makeing vissual reminder'...

"Thank you.. That is the most sense anyone has made all day... You rock.

I fear. o_O

I live in Atlanta, and this past summer, the Martin Luther King Center had an exhibit of photographs of African-Americans that had been lynched. As far as I know, no black people protested the exhibit, claiming that it "reminded them they were victims of hate crimes". The best thing to do is to remind people that these ugly injustices still exist. (Sorry got off on a tangent)

My favorite part is when madame_no steps in to support violettree and states "I hate when people attack someone b/c they stated their opinion."  Isn't that what violettree did in the first place?

Seeing the icons and pretending I don't know of the death-threats, they look like run of the mill interracial relation support icons.  I don't know what could be so terribly distasteful about that.

They're married-- that's a public declaration, pretty much by definition.

But how refreshing to see fans SUPPORT a real-life hetero relationship. And yes, Viggo/Orlando tinhats, I am talking about you.

Yeah but it's just the principle of it. I mean right to privacy and not interrogating.

The right to... I understand all these words, but they don't make any sense together.

I do not think these words mean what she thinks they mean.

/horribly mangled useless quote

I don't understand the whole point here anyway. Someone had a little too tall a cup of self-righteous bitch juice this morning, methinks. She would have had to for it to make sense.

It's livejournal, not anywhere that really matters. The only people who are going to see the icons are people that have no problem with the relationship, most likely. Of course, that's earth logic. My bad.

Okay, WTF? Just....WTF?!

Okay, let me first just say that I'm in an interracial relationship. And I'm sorry, seeing an icon supporting you and your interracial relationship is not the most traumatic experience in the world, as this stupid woman suggests. Really, if your sensitive temperament cannot allow people making icons SUPPORTING YOU, then you need to fucking get over yourself. You have to deal with a lot more than that. I know we get stared at on dates like we're a sideshow, and certainly those two have it even worse with all the threatening letters. This is nothing.

"Disrespectful?" Has she seen virtually ANY icons on LJ? Good Lord, she acts as if its icons of them having sex on it with the tag, "Interracial fucking is hott! Black men have big penises!" *almost wants that icon just to taunt the bitch*

This is just...God. I honestly do not think someone could be this over-sensitive. Makes me want to tie her down and force her to listen to "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" until her crazy hippie ass vomits. Jesus, she makes liberals look fucking stupid and reactionary, which just kills my hope for my side.

Sorry, I'll stop wanking. :D

I somehow get the feeling she's doing it because "If you point it out to more people, they'll be more death threats! Don't make their lives harder!"

It seems like they're both openly married and published that they were getting death threats. It's weird to care more about privacy than the celebrities involved do.

Plus, since the racism thing is more fucked up than the lack of privacy, I respect their decision to be public about the death threats. Awareness is teh good.
