Because the wank spilled over to this community...
sashwizzled posts to fanficrants the following:

Dear fangirls,

There are more important things in the world than fanfiction and the people who write it, believe it or not.
So, when you all stump together (using money that could be feeding your kids, feeding yourselves or possibly, God forbid, going toward Third World countries) to buy expensive computer equipment for your favourite fanfiction author just so that she can keep writing your favourite fanfiction... Zarrah's brain melts.

It may be the Christmas season, but dude. Think about it. If this person didn't write fanfiction, would you give a damn?

No love,
Zarrah

Disclaimer: Yes, this is about Cassie Claire. Yes, I do know Cassie Claire was robbed and that's why people are doing it. No, this does not change my opinion.

At first, it wasn't really that bad. No one was really vehement, mostly people just agreed or disagreed politely and stated reasons why or gawked at the whole thing. Eh, except this comment.

But, then Cassie herself visits the thread and things start to get a little ugly.

Honorable mention wank: Have you ever been robbed?

Yes, I participated in the thread, but I wasn't part of the wanky bits. Thusly it was not posted to [info]i_wank.

More Cassie Claire wank? What is she, some king of wankbattery that runs the energizer bunny of HP fandom?

I'm flummoxed by this story.

And if I were her friend, who has just lost all her patients' info, I'd be feeling a bit worried. Maybe they'll need to start fund-raising for a lawyer one of these days, knowing how crazy it can get in the medical field.

Can we just shoot her and put her out of OUR misery? I'm sure that her adoring fans will donate lots more money for a lovely funeral. They can bring in some Riverdancers and later they'll all stand up at a podium and talk about their favorite CC quote, that was most likely taken from somewhere else.

Being robbed sucks ass, regardless of who gets targeted. Also, I think it's worth pointing out that she didn't solicit this from her fans, so it's not like she's channeling SaveKaren or whoever.

In short: Whatever.

Have I been robbed?

No,but my little 20 year old brother has.
But he didn't ask for me or my mother to replace his stuff. He said he'll get them back himself.

The main reason is because he says he's old enough to deal with these things and he doesn't want mom urging her baby boy back home.

Now to me,he's either very grown up about it or very stupid not to tell mom,but I know one thing:

He's more responsible than I am if I ever get out on my own and have that situtation.

I love how Rustybitch makes assumptions and calls Sashwizzled "small-minded". Cause we all know that "why are people breaking their backs for a fanfic writer when they could be helping the needy" means "I want people to buy ME things because I'm so jealous!".

I love how whenever anyone spends money on anything in fandom, someone always brings up "the needy." You could donate money to the needy instead of having an internet connection, if you want to get right down to it. What do you want to bet that this girl hasn't donated a cent to any charitable causes?

*Shrug.* I wouldn't donate money to a BNF just because I liked her fanfic, but I might consider it if the same thing happened to an online friend (you know, someone I had been chatting with for a year, etc). That said, it's their money, their business.

While I happen to think that people have carte blanche to do whatever they want with their own money, the OP has a point. Would people do the same for her if she weren't a BNF, or would they go "Dude, sorry, sucks to be you"?

Eh. If people want to waste their money, I say go ahead and do it, but I do wish some of 'em would stop acting like it's some great charity. A few of the posts I've read seem a little too....high-horsey, for me, I guess. Giving money so that a BNF can have the luxury of a laptop does not equal clothing orphans and feeding widows and all that, even if the excess is going to "teh children" (I read one comment, either here or on fanficrants, where someone mentioned that people should be impressed by the "big hearts" of people with tumors and children and whatnot giving their last dime to the cause. Frankly, in my cynical little world, giving your last dime to starving children etc. is a big-hearted thing to do. Giving your last dime so a BNF you've never met can have a laptop? In my world, we call that "stupid"). On the other hand, some people are getting their panties in way too big a bunch about the whole thing.

Meanwhile, the beautiful wankiness of it all gave me a nice giggle the other day when I was in the parking lot at work and someone tried to sell me candy bars for charity and my first thought was, "Will my money go to get Cassie Claire a new laptop? Here, take this gold farthing and give me the biggest bar you have!"

Not that this makes any difference now, but...did anyone stop to think (before doing this) that Cazz might have a PC as well as a laptop, so she wouldn't be SOL when it comes to backing up her book/DV? Eh?

Does she? Because she sure as Hell had one back in March when she was whining about not having an iPod. And actually, those who I've know have a laptop actually have PCs to work on as well. PC = big work. Laptop = portable work. That's pretty much how it works.

She even said in her post that she lost irreplacable notes, old writings, outlines for future projects and the like...lots of notes, old writings, synopsis and outlines. Sure as Hell doesn't seem worried about having lost her whole life in the OP, and seems more annoyed with the inconvenience rather than destroyed.

Think about that for a second.

Okay. I was going to stay way the hell out of this wank, considering that I don't care, but then someone had to pull out the 'have YOU been robbed?' card. That makes me see red and put the wankpedos full speed ahead.

Dear Demeter,

Yes, I have been robbed. I've been robbed several times by a member of MY. OWN. FAMILY. I'm not just talking 'Oh, something came up missing'. I'm talking about someone coming into my house, my own bedroom, and stealing my shit at night when I was sleeping.

And yet, I did not whine about it or spout the whole 'I'm a victim' mentality. I didn't even accept money from well-meaning friends and family. I dealt with it myself (putting in locks for my room, not allowing that relative in my house, getting the police involved, etc.) and I can say I'm a better person for earning back the things I lost.

Now, I am not CC and she is not me. She is more than welcome to make her own choices in this situation, but YOU piss me off because you are assuming that all people are the same and she has the 'right' to act the way she does because she was robbed. Shut the fuck up and sit down, you utterly stupid bitch.

No love for YOU,
an_lee

the subway
(Anonymous)

You know what this really reminds me of? A psychology experiment where the young, healthy experimenter would get on a crowded subway train, go up to a stranger, and ask for his or her seat. In some cases, the experimenter would just say, "Excuse me, may I have your seat?" Other times, the script would also include, "I can't read standing up."

There are a couple of articles about it here (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/14/nyregion/14subway.html?ex=1102654800&en=4cb24631ceb9db2e&ei=5070)
and here. (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/14/nyregion/14experiment.html?ex=1102654800&en=2d90d7476586d064&ei=5070) (You have to register to read the NYTimes, but it's free.)

The majority of people asked would give up their seats. But they, and the people around them, would also often react with some measure of incredulity and/or indignation. But what really intrigued the psychologists was how the people asked to conduct the experiment reacted. They felt increasingly anxious, hating more and more having to ask strangers to inconvenience themselves for something they didn't really need.

Apparently, though, some people would be able to sit down happily. After all, the seat was given willingly! And why should the onlookers find it crass? People's seats are their own to give up!

All of that's true, but there are still unwritten rules of social interaction. Asking people to give up something for you can imply that you think you're more entitled to it than they are, and when there aren't clear reasons to see why you really might need it more than they do (on the subway, if you're old or infirm, for example), it rubs a lot of people the wrong way. People react saying, "How tacky" or "what nerve" because it takes a lot of tacky nerve to think you're more entitled than the average person just for being your sweet self.

This isn't a perfect analogy, of course, because in this case the person benefitting didn't directly ask for strangers' contributions. However, I bet if, in the psychology experiment, a healthy young woman went up to a stranger, gestured to another healthy young woman standing a few feet away, and said, "Excuse me, may my friend have your seat? She can't read standing up," and then the friend happily took the vacated seat, a lot of people would still react with incredulity and indignation.

It's true that getting burgled and losing expensive computers sucks a lot more than not having a seat on the subway. However, it's still something that healthy young people can fix for themselves, rather than letting strangers give things up for them.

Copperbadge (who was one of the people fundraising here and incidentally seems like a very decent guy) reacted with incredulity to all the indignation against the fundraising and posted in his lj: "Be kind to everyone you meet, for we are all fighting a hard battle." That's a great thought, but I think that assumption part of the problem here. A lot of people aren't willing to see the situation as a hard battle.

Not having a seat on the subway is a minor inconvenience. Losing a laptop is a major, much worse inconvenience, but still an inconvenience. Having to possibly tighten one's belt a little, get a loan and/or find some paying work to save up to buy a new laptop, while getting by with using friends' and public computers in the meantime (especially when you're working on a novel and not already doing something like working two jobs just to make the rent and buy enough ramen for the week)--none of these things really constitute a hard battle. People are less inclined to be kind when they're asked to treat them as such.

Having to cope with feeling unsafe and shaken after being burlged, arguably, is a bit more of a battle than not having a lapt, and it certainly deserves other people's kindness, but the acquisition of material goods isn't the way to go about winning that battle.

Mickey M.

If my home had been broken into and my possessions taken, rather than asking for contributions to replace my computers and electronic equipment (because that is what insurance is for), if I asked for anything at all, I think it would go toward some window locks, dead bolts, and a new security system. But perhaps that would be too sensible. Or maybe I'm just paranoid.

*sighs* I found it funny at first. Now it's just getting tiresome. Seriously, if she had half a braincell, she'd fucking stop showing up when people posted a bitch on LJ about her and feeding the trolls, get her new 'pooter, and update DV so all her fangirls are sated and stop taking their frustrations out on everyone who tells her she's a moron for not having the computer insured not that I encountered any of that on LJ at all... nu-huh, nooo way... *whistles innocently* and I can go back to hating her for writing shit fic.

I think it's tacky to accept cash and/or gifts bought with cash from fans, but I'm not everyone so whatever.

However, borus_redrum is annoying as all get out.

Dude, calling people "cupcake?" There should be a rule against that.

That laptop is her living.
Pen and paper, much? Worked for years prior to the invention of laptops. And how about a typewriter? Tons of Goodwill-type stores have them for uber-cheap, no matter how poor the "dear robbed victim" may be.

I'm just rather annoyed by the absolute spoil of it all. I mean, a regular monitor/tower that can handle Word and other basic apps runs for about $500 these days; why must we have laptops? And I do believe somebody else has already mentioned insurance.

C'mon, folksies - if you're robbed, that's your business. Why couldn't we keep the charity to "replace the toys" instead? (and who the fuck steals toys when there are laptops to be had, anyway?)

What I can't wait for is the sequal to this one. And it's coming, oh I know it is.

See, right now this is giving, charity for all the wonderful fic blahblahblah, but the next time CC has a bit of writers block, or her muse goes on vacation, or she doesn't post anything for a little too long that'll change but quick. People will start thinking about the things they could've done with that money, and how she owes them for it...I think you can see how it would go from there.

Yep, yep, it's gonna be a real classic.

WTF IS WRONG WITH EVERYBODY?!?!!!11!

I don't understand why everyone is getting mad at Cassie. Okay people, follow me on this one. If you get robbed and people give you money, it's okay to take it.

She didn't ask for the money, it was her crazy, insane fans that gave it to her. She can't help it that her fans hopped aboard the Crazy Train headed straight for Cassieville the moment they read that first 14515854 page chapter.

These people worship her. And they're crazy. The buy her things like shower curtains and Ipods and computers. And they're crazy. They find out she's been robbed and they worry how this will affect DV. And they're crazy.

I'm not a really a Cassie fan, per se, but she seems like an okay person. I've never read The Trilogy and I don't intend to because the thought of Harry and Hermione together makes my nipples invert. Consequently, I can't speak to whether the trilogy deserves this sort of worship. Therefore, I sticking with my theory that they are all crazy.

In conclusion, blame TEH CRAZY, not the Cassie.

It's amazing how she calls people whose cameras she may have stomped by her drones at cons friends all of a sudden, and how she takes their money while she would call them stalkers if they ever tried talking to her.
What have we got? Fame, no shame, egrarious tackiness, and about as much style as her ghastly fanfiction.
