Dear Ms. Rowling: How DARE you not cater to MEEEEEEE?!
A few days ago, JK Rowling made some pretty big updates on her website.

After the update, Cloudsurfing makes a post titled "I love her universe more than she does." Thanks for letting us know. Really.

Azaelia makes a rebuttal post.

Some familiar names wank in the comments. I mean, how dare JKR diss the Draco crew? After all, the Weasleys are racists.

Heeeeeeere's Hitler!

HP wank, how I missed you! I love you, anonymous tipster!

ETA: The post has now been locked, but melusine has been kind enough to post the original text in the comments here. Thanks!

ETA2: And a copy of the original page with some comments intact (thanks adinaj69!)

*inhales* Ahh, HP wank.

Question: if she's a terrible, terrible writer... how is it that they're able to read and enjoy her work?

If JKR sucks so bad, how come these fuckers are buying her books and shit?

If something sucks, why buy it?

And I bet those assholes couldn't write their way out of a paper bag, if they had to. Spare me.

Draco-dissing?

Okay, I've been over JKR's website upates about four times now--where exactly does this alleged dissing of the Draco fans take place?

I've seen her smackdown (playfully) the fans who ask about an affair between Snape and Harry's mother, but nothing worse than that!

Honestly, I'm a pretty obsessed Harry Potter fan, but these people have PROBLEMS!

This hurts my head in so many ways that only 3 hours of sleep can't deal with.

Are these people aware of how much time and effort go into writing a novel, or even creating a universe as intricate as HP? I mean, the woman not only wrote the novels, but even penned other books that go even deeper into the backstory and little-explained elements of the universe. Even if you're not the biggest HP fan, and don't enjoy jumping into the fandom loony bin bandwagon, like me, you must have some respect for the woman, and even more so if you're playing in her sandbox. But no, you love JKR's baby world more than her, of course. Makes perfect sense, especially hwen you insult it. Sure, maybe her work isn't the form of high art that the teenyboppers fangirls/boys (equal opportunity!) seem to think it is, but the woman can write an entertaining book.

...But then again, if people thought things out before writing them, we wouldn't have the painful beautiful statements such as Hiitler!Draco flying around.

OMG HOW DARE SHE DISLIEK OUR ICKLE DRAKKIEPOO!!!!!11

As a Ron fan it's really supereasy for me to say this but I'd still claim that Rowling is more amused by Draco-fans than anything.

I wrote a story once and posted it on a website piece by piece. Several friends of mine liked it and followed it. I created a character so that he could do one thing to advance the plot. Then I got rid of him, not in a cruel way, but it was just something I had to do. Some readers were all "WTF" at this. They'd really liked the character. To me the character wasn't important. Neither did I feel anything for the character and was surprised people actually thought he was cool.

(I wrote a companion story about him after I finished the actual story, as a birthday present for a friend who had liked him. All well, ends well.)

But with this experience, I can sort of see where Rowling comes from. To her Draco isn't important. She hasn't really payed attention to the character and I seriously doubt she will. It sucks for the Draco-fans but stop being so damn offended. I know several Draco-fans who don't give a shit about what Rowling thinks because hey, why should they?

The Hitler thing is ..bleh. It's like, yeah, everyone knows there's the obvious "Voldemort = Hitler"-thing but there's no actual allegory so it's pointless to argue it.

I was just thinking of posting this here.

Spare me the cloudsurfings and saevas of the fandom, please. If you've ever *listened* to JKR during one of her interviews, she's a very relaxed, jokey person. Her comments on Snape and Draco aren't all hoity-toity THOU ART EVIL shit. But of course, if you're Dracofen, you're already oppressed since OotP didn't feature Draco in leather, so any comments that mean ol' Jo makes *must* be meant to personally deliver a slap in the face to you, Dracofen #17, sitting at her computer writing fic where Slytherins are the good guys and Gryffs are pure evil. Of *course*, I mean, why wouldn't she want to insult you personally? That's what writers like to do to their fans!

Blah. JKR allows and even could be said to *encourage* fanfic since she gives awards to sites that discuss fanfic; she answers questions; and as was brilliantly brought up on one of those threads, she invented Harry *and then* the rest of the HP world; so any arguments that "oh, we have to see Draco through Harry" or "but there's a world beyond Harry" are actually totally false.
I guess this whole comment can be boiled down to bitch, please.

I deserve a hand smack, for I have dove headfirst into the wank like a grinning bukakke star. But that's besides the point.

My ruling on the whole wank? Shut up about what you want in someone else's world. You want the little background facts? Well, I'm sorry but that's not going to make the story any better. I'm here for plot, not for background crap. You get all whiny/whanky when things are blown up by The God of the World/Canon? That's why you shouldn't get so overinflated about stuff.

I like HP fanfic that is as close to canon as possible--or has such a compelling, lovable character and interpretation that I can disbelieve the canon for your story. Differnet viewpoints? Works for me. What if scenarios? Happy day. Snape and Herm getting it on in the potion storage room? Pardon me, but I've got a bucket I need to hork in. I'm not here for OOC redemption, or leather pants, or any ships on the sea. The fact she even allows fanfic--and once said something along the lines of reading a few of them--makes me glad that a lawyer's not gonna descend on poor little me for my fic. One of the reasons my fic is set so far back (I just finished the parallel of PS/SS) is so that later things in canon won't bend me over and bone my fic.

Sorry, fanpuppies, that you get all barky cause the master of the kennel says that the bones are from cows instead of pigs. You should be glad she doesn't have you locked up in small cages with muzzles and choke chains, like a great many authors who don't allow fanfiction (or only allow it if it's written to their specifications).

What the hell are wrong with these people anyway? It is one thing to seek redeeming qualities in a charater, but it is quite another to impose these qualities and then in the process redeem the characters.

That is craziness talking.

I have a question. If these people hate JKR's writing so much, then why do they keep buying her books? If I don't like a series, or if it starts off good and then goes significantly downhill, then I stop reading it. Simple.

...Wait, that would be logical. Never mind.

In my RL experience, people who have literary training haven't been very impressed with the technical aspects of JKR's writing. I got 2 such people to read them and neither were impressed because of supposed technical flaws. Personally, I think they can't see the wood for the trees. I think their critical side won't allow them to suspend their disbelief enough to get wrapped up in JKRs magical world. That said, I know not everyone is going to like any given book. Also, I've never analyzed the books in any such depth as to notice whose birthday is out by a year or who's wearing the wrong colored socks or what-the-fuck ever! Lighten up, fellow fans!

Me? I love the way JKR plays with her fan's minds and gently mocks their theories about the books. It's all in good fun! It's a totally typical attitude of mocking everything and anything that's a part of everyday life in her homeland. I also think she's just as open to being mocked as doing the mocking!

Now quit having babies until you finish the series, Joanne, dammit! I can't wait for you forever!

My biggest problem with this is not that people have different interpretations of characters like Draco and Snape- of course everyone has different interpretations- but that the fen who get upset say, "Woe, JKR is oppressing us because she's attributing motives to us that we don't have, like fangirling Tom Felton! Woe!"...

...and then they turn around and do the exact same fucking thing to her.

Of course she can't really love her universe because she doesn't write it the way they would. Of course she must be dim and hate people who have different interpretations of characters because she jokes about those interpretations. OF COURSE she's stupid to prefer Gryffindors to Slytherins. Of course her motives are all fucked up, and she should know that. But theirs are good and pure, and how dare she imply anything about them OMG!!!1seventy-one!!?

When you can prove you have a telepathic connection to Rowling, fen who complain about her motives, then I'll listen to you. In the meantime, if you're going to defend the purity and sanctity of your minds, keep in mind that she's probably got no reason to think of her own interpretations as any less pure and sanctified.

My main gripe with JKR is that, to my mind, she has a very simplistic, childlike style of writing

Uh. Now, I'm not a HP fan, read the first two books, bored, moved on, but wasn't HP written for young people?

I realize it's a book/series/movie that adults can dig and that is cool but...

...it was written for younger people, right? So why wouldn't her writing style reflect for her...uh...intended audience?

There are writers more flawed than Rowling but with the success comes a lot of criticism and clever fans. emphasis mine

Word. and...

When you've got people on the Snitch compiling which characters giggle and which don't, you're beginning to approach the level that scholars have been hitting with Shakespeare (there has been a work published on punctuation within Shakespeare).

Bingo!

Frankly, I don't care if she writes Pulitzer Prize winning fiction.

Is she writing? Yes.

Are people buying? Yes.

Is she making money off her idea? YES!

Fuck me running sideways. Why the hell is it so bad to read something for the enjoyment of it? Escapism, you know?

It all can't be Shakespeare, Dickens, e.e.cummings and Eudora Welty.

I think the problem is that JKR wants her readers to care only about a certain set of characters. She loves the Trio, and thus the only characters we are supposed to love are the Trio. We want to love her entire creation, and she thinks of most of it as background.

Oh, how SHOCKING! The MAIN CHARACTER/S get a lot of attention! How dare she give spotlight to the character whose NAME IS THE TITLE whilst cruelly ignoring all these wonderful secondary characters and hurtfully screwing them over!

*rolls eyes*

If she really just saw secondaries as window dressing and didn't care, she wouldn't have given them ANYTHING in the way of background or personality. That's how a series is-even if the secondaries are developed, the main character will get the spotlight.

And I am a LV fangirl. I run the largest archive dedicated to him and I've never once been offended by her saying (in however many words) that I have issues. She seems laid back and joking. ::Shrugs:: I love horror and I like the angst.

Nazi supports vs. people liking fictional characters, though. I smile and nod when Hitler is brought up. "Yes, yes, thank you fandom wouldn't be the same without the obligatory Hitler reference."

Anyways, if you're going to go for evil, go for the original, ::waves Riddle banner:: Draco's not even second best. I've yet to be impressed with anything evil he's done.

You know, I wish the HP fans would just shut the fuck up and stop trying to justify that just because their version of Draco is pretty it must mean he's a good person. No, he's not. First off, isn't he supposed to look sort of weaselish and small? Not hot. Secondly, justifying wanting someone's/thing's man meat by ascribing a good personality that doesn't exist is going to get you in a world of trouble and pain later on. Pretty and desirable is not equal to good person.

I HATE IT when the OP (in any case, not just this one) mocks spelling. I mean, I get called a grammar nazi all the time, but I'm not going to make snarky comments about someone's spelling or grammar if they want to comment on something I said, because to me, that screams "MY ARGUMENT IS WEAK AND I WANT TO FEEL SUPERIOR SO OMG TYPOS!!" (also, who HASN'T made a typo in their life?) True, the anonymouse made a few spelling errors (a lot more grammar errors, though, so she was a bit off in her remark to begin with) and was fairly snarky, but lordy, take the high road and DON'T take cheap jabs at their spelling. It's unnecessary and it doesn't make you look any better. It just makes you look like an ass.

It just annoys the crap out of me when people do that, sorry :\
