And to think, I'm not even a fan of RPS/RPF.

Anyway, while catching up on my Friends list on LJ, I see that the ass-kickin' ninja that is percy_weatherby has posted a rant on the LJ he and his friend share for this purpose. This is amusing to me, but only for the line "So much nastiness... 'Wanks' and 'kerfluffles' and 'pointing and laughing'..." I mean, it reads like an account of a traumatic flashback gone somehow horribly awry.

"First, there were all these wanks... then... then they kerfluffled me. And then... Oh, god. How they pointed and laughed!"

I want you to go over there [to the 5 sites listed], read up, take note of who the members are, see what they do, see what it is that is eating at the heart of this fandom, I want you all to understand that the enemy isn't the "domlijahs" it's this attitude of superiority and outright rude behavior.

f_w has a long-standing tradition of equal-opportunity mocking - how can you be superior when you even make fun of your own inherent wankiness? :)

It's been my experience that the people I've met through fandom_wank have been the nicest, most polite fen in fandom than I've met in mailing lists, message boards and lj communities. People here are so willing to laugh at themselves that it reduces the bullshit to nil. Rather than get worked up over a stupid OTP or issue we fully recognize our irrational behavior and proceed to then poke fun at ourselves with a flurry of injokes and icon wars. It's masturbatory in a way, but at least we get off without resorting to agonizing over the minutae of two people who may or may not be fucking.

Them passing judgment on us? That's a laugh and a half.

Just to be serious for a second...you're exactly right. This is just a little dark corner of LOTR fandom -- what we or the tinhats do or say has absolutely nothing to do with the vast majority of LOTR fandom. Most fans don't even know RPS exists, let alone know about domlijah. This isn't "eating out the heart" of the LOTR fandom, or even the LOTR RPS fandom. The asshats need to stop overestimating how important they are. At least here on JF no one has delusions of grandeur.

What's funny is that I think many of us could make a post where we list the usernames of every single one of the people involved in this ridiculousness, and give detailed descriptions of how each of them are fundamentally flawed as human beings.

At some point, I hope they realize that their pecking order and status-achieved-by-nastiness stuff just really doesn't get them anywhere in life.

Oh I so agree with this. Absolute agreement. Because unlike many people I've noticed who never pull themselves out of the RPGs or the fanfics or the communities, I drop all of the wanking, all of the obsessive fandom crap when I log off. I may laugh at certain wankiness or tsk tsk other things but I don't consider my status on F_W or LJ as a determining factor in my life. It's all about the brief moments of laughter, dagnabit!
