Running to fat
Sinfest creator Tatsuya Ishida receives flack for today's comic for being an insensitive clod who makes fun of fat women. Never mind that Squigley is supposed to be a male chauvinist pig. At least one person points this out, but the others seem to be a little distracted.

The genuine wank is tiny, but it has potential. Witness the following excerpts.

finding_coral: Fuckin A... and why don't people like big girls??

cmot_dribbler: Cause it shows lazyness, and a lack of respect for oneself. (IMHO)

I like how people are getting up in arms over a comic called SINFEST being....*gasp*....offensive! Who would have thought?

comic = abusing a stereotype, but tat's always doing that

cmot_dribbler = assface

morbidly obtuse = best typo ever

Would you be "morbidly obtuse" if you didn't look both ways before crossing the road? And then got run over, of course.

Heh, I'm built close to the "fat chick" in the strip and I laughed at it.

And Mr. Morbidly Obtuse made me laugh my fat ass off - that was one helluva typo that got a wonderful snarky response. I'm hardly lazy, but genetics have been working against me for years, and my slender and very sexy bf loves the fact that there's "more to love" and we were together during my skinny years too. He likes me better this way. :P

Nope, my self esteem was actually worse when I was thin. Seems pretty healthy now.

This comment cracked me up.

Don't worry, you can be more vocal about your personal preferences when society gets up and goes to the bathroom.

I find it very telling when a person takes a comic strip too seriously.

Let out the twist in them panties a bit, hon. If you get a sense of humor, you could hurt yourself.

cmot_dribbler?

Was that an intentional misspelling, or just another example of idiocy?

Just remember, the opinions of a deliberately sexist character (a literal male chavaunist pig) are always direct, literal, representations of the cartoonist's own beliefs.

So the next time Garfield beats up Odie, remember that this means Jim Davis is an animal abuser.

The best part of that entire wank was when they started using "obtuse" in place of "obese."

"Morbidly obtuse" is totally my new favorite descriptor.

Also, man - cmot_dribbler is an obtuse - heh! - asshat, yes. But talk about overacting. It's a comic. Full of cariacatures. If you are not willing to laugh, you're *probably* reading the wrong thing.

I thought the wank wasn't about the comic as much as it was about the person saying if you're overweight it's because you're lazy and stupid because there's no way someone could have a weight problem and not hate themselves.

Very much so - but coming from a family that's genetically predisposed to obesity (I'm 5'3" and 128 but only because I work my ass off at it) statements like that make me see red...I figure it's best I point and laugh at people's grammar, rather than risk wanking all over the place myself. *g*

Linzee, comes from a long line of lazy self-haters apparently.

Yeah, and according to this bozo, so do I.

But given the choice, I'd rather be obese than obtuse, so I win and he loses. :PPPP

word. and word. and word again.

The comic wasn't even all that offensive; it's kind of a standard sitcommy-type joke (not to rag on Sinfest; I never really read it).

The comments, though... just... people, shut up. All of you.

I know a lot of men who like fat chicks. Hell, my family is full of chubby chasers and are not embarassed about it. One of my cousins, a 5'2" bodybuilder loves his women huge, and tall. His wife, due to diabetes, had to lose weight and now she's about my size (18/20) and he considers her skinny.

My own father likes his women big. He thought my mother was at her best when she was over 200 lbs (mom is fairly short too) and his current wife is also fairly large.

Yup, they're out there and even I recently ran into a gorgeous Persian fellow who thought I was a honey! Too bad I'm already taken.

Other than that, I thought the strip was funny. The "Relax, sir. Pucker up." was quite funny. Time Squigley got his comeuppance for being such a dork.

I agree, I thought the comic was hilarious, and Im a big girl, too (18/20 as well). My boyfriend's always telling me how gorgeous I am, so I don't care about the other guys who have different tastes.

I wouldn't date a scrawny guy, ever, and I wouldnt be happy if everyone got all upset about that.

Its all a matter of personal preference and if you can't stand back and laugh at yourself once in a while, the rest of the world will do it for you.

It's funny that they'd prefer the character to be completely out of character for the sake of being politically correct.

And is SINFEST we're talking about. Oh man!

Oh well. *shines her lovely OTP icon*

My Slightly Wanky Response
[info]ladydisdain
2004-12-17 07:15 pm UTC (link)
Because it shows laziness and a lack of respect for oneself.

Size is not necessarily an indicator of lifestyle. It is possible to have incredibly high cholestoral intake and still be pretty slender. It is also possible to work out on a regular basis and still have a few extra pounds. (Incidentally, I had the same problem with the movie, Supersize Me. No, zooming in on people's large posteriors to make a point about health and fitness isn't tacky at all. /sarcasm)

The laziest person I know is a size 2 girl with whom I'm forced to work, and who regularly gets away with not doing her work because she "has a hangover."

Yes, people have preferences for people of certain sizes, but making assumptions like that is just ignorant.
