You don't *get* it! And we're all jelouz! And fundamentally insecure!
Remember Turimel? She was scammed by VB and OB, and has now written a book about it called "When a Fan Hits the Shit".

Unfortunately, none other than the Forces of Evil (capitalization mine) are at work to make Teh Book (capitalization hers) lose its battle against the evil hobbits. How? By writing bad reviews in Amazon.

"Amateurish prose?" Gee, Dan Hays, professional book reviewer, didn't find it amateur, he commented that it was very well written. The Lincoln Heights Literary Society didn't find it amateur..let's see, here's "lively and funny" and "effective storytelling device." I've got university professors and Hollywood producers telling me what a fabulous read it was. Dorothea Salo, probably the most literary minded person to read the book, did say that it's "not written in anything resembling journalistic or historical style," but I believe that's meant as a compliment--in my mind historical style = boring and journalistic = more exciting but no funnies.

And I'm sorry, but NO ONE ELSE has found the book "not funny," besides those three people (two of whom have obviously not read it and the third I'm not sure).

See, it's been read by intellectual giants and possibly waitresses living in trailer parks, and they all *loved* it!

In short, just who the hell are those guys and why are they trying so hard to make my book a failure? I mean, really, wank me on FW all you want, but deliberately writing bullshit in order to persuade people not to buy Teh Book? That's gone beyond childish. Are you guys so fundamentally insecure that the only way you can feel satisfied is to see my book fail? Is it jealousy, that you've always wanted to write something and I went and took a topic you were familiar with and wrote a book about it, beating you to the punch? Do you feel left out because I didn't include your personal BoE story, or ask to use one of your snarky quotes from F-W?

Or maybe they just don't like the book.

...

Naaaah.

If I had a fraction of the charisma Amy Player has...I try to picture what she would have done here. How can I turn this book into my own little BoE--

I suppose when you've been an spectator to VB's actions, you wonder if you could be like her. Temptation may be strong; there's hobbit sex, money, the adoration of people, snuggling Sean Astin, cookies... but don't go to the Dark Side of the Force! Because... um, it's illegal. In many countries. And no one will read your fanfiction anymore.

I also don't have any sexy explicit slash stuff. Who wants to read 300 pages of WTFBBQ when they can just click over to a fanfic site and read about steamy breath and exploring fingers? [...] Gotta have that least-common-denominator element in there or you're stuck with something too highbrow, too thoughty.

"Maybe people are disappointed because they want to skip all the details of my story and get straight to the VB/OB sex... but how can I include that? The book was intended for family consumption! These people extremely resent anything that's not pr0n, the pervs." Mmmmpr0n.

Or maybe it really isn't a very good book. So many people who don't have either a grudge against me OR some personal stake in the story have complimented it, that makes it hard for me to believe that it isn't good.

"But maybe... Maybe the book isn't good. NO! I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT THIS PONY HASN'T BEEN BEATEN *AND* BEADED TO DEATH!"

And now I'm slightly sour because I don't have an Anne Rice icon.

ETA: Fixed the book's title. Ahem.

Or maybe it means, Turimel, that you = far too close to this to be objective.

I wouldn't know, I'm not planning to waste $15 bucks on it when I can read FW for free! But honestly, this is beautiful. It's like the big scale version of some badfic author screaming 'HOW DARE THEY FLAME ME! Lincoln Heights Literary Society likes it! I HAVE LOTS OF POSITIVE REVIEWS AND THUS THEY ARE WRONG!'

*gets out popcorn*

She really named her book "The Fan who hit the shit"???? I bet that won't be on the front display as soon as you enter Barnes and Noble. :\

The book's called When a Fan Hits the Shit. All of you planning to throw stones at Turimel for being biased and inaccurate might not want to do so from this particular glass house... here at FW we apparently have a hard time getting a six-word title right.

For anyone who's thinking of buying the book, it's pretty good, and way more objective and calm than I'd actually expected.

As for the quality...well, *I* thought it was fine. Not too dry, not too snarky, and well supported with actual evidence. After I finished it, I gave it to my husband, who knows absolutely nothing about the whole Tentmoot disaster, or the VB/OB backstory, or much about fandom. He enjoyed it, boggled delightedly at Teh Crazy, and he found the writing clear and easy to follow.

The book was intended for family consumption!

With a title like When a Fan Hits the Shit, she thinks it will get family consumption? Is she for real?

Maybe people don't like it because it's only passably interesting if you're involved in LotR fandom.

I want to read this book but I don't trust myself with a credit card so I don't do any e-shopping and I seriously doubt the book is available here in Finland.

The irony if she were to go all Anne Rice and I do agree that is to a certain extent wanky but I also think that an author has the right to respond to criticism.

I'm beginning to think the entire LOTR actor fandom (hell, maybe all of LOTR altogether) is just a wank cyclone, and anyone who touches it, even peripherally, gets sucked into the vortex and becomes part of the wank.

You can have 9 "experts" on a stage exhorting 900 people about the wonderful taste of shit, and if the personal opinion of the 900 is that shit is, well, stinky and bad, you're not going to be selling much of it, are you?

I'm looking forward to reading the book--in spite of its title.
But perhaps Turimel should prescribe herself some calm pills? Because when I look at that Amazon page, it invites me to "read all eight customer reviews." Eight.

Seriously, even if all eight were negative (which they aren't), who the hell cares? It means a couple of people didn't like the book. It doesn't mean Evil is Abroad in the Land.

I think [info]truculence, [info]mssilverstar and moodeln using the review to harp on Turimel for writing the book in the first place is wankier, myself.

Perhaps I've misundersood...

There are *8* reviews on Amazon. None of them are particularly harsh, but they aren't fawningly enthusiastic, either.

It's a book with a miserable cover and an awful title, written by someone with (apparently?) no background as a writer, with no professional editorial help.

Turimel should be happy that it's selling at ALL, rather than moaning about conspiracies.

Uh.. is it overly wanky of me to ask just what's being done with the proceeds from sales of this book?

Is it going to help pay off the debts that -all- the victims of BoE have accrued...

... or is it going to line Turimel's pockets?

If the latter is the case, then this goes beyond mere wankage. Is it "oh noe11! no one is interested in the truth!11" or is it actually "oh noe! I won't get any money from this book if the reviews are bad?"

What I don't get is how she thinks it can be a *bad* thing for people to constantly be talking here about her various wanking. Hasn't she ever heard the expression "there's no such thing as bad publicity"?

OK, can we please let this whole turimel/book thing go? Seriously, it's getting sort of old.

I mean, seriously, it seems like some people are just out to make her feel worse about trying to write a book from her experiences. Some of the reviews complained of a lack of objectivity, but I've never read anywhere that objectivity is a necessity to any story. If you think she's stupid or holding a grudge to do it, that's all well and good, but jesus stop hunting her down. We get that she's wanky already. I don't need regular postings from her journal like some sick "stalking turmiel update!"

It's like some people just have taken it unto themselves to blame her for everything since she's gullible and wanky. LET IT GO.

It was funny the first five billion times, now it's just starting to rot. The same arguments over and over.
